There can be no doubt that Freemasons, members of the Grande Orient de France were prime movers in the period of the French Revolution and reference to the Grande Orient's website will give some detail on this topic for all who have a genuine interest in research into this subject. The Grande Orient de France is no longer considered to be in the mainstream of International Male Freemasonry since it allows political discussion and activity within its Fraternity, does not use the Bible in its ceremonies, allows Athiests to be members and Women Masons to exchange visits with them. However, although it is unconventional, it is still the largest Grand Lodge in France.

Your readers may also be interested in taking a look at our website: www.grandlodgeofallengland.org which gives as much information as possible about Ancient Anglo-Saxon Freemasonry. As it is a public website we cannot supply details about our rituals, or other secrets but the reasons for Anglo-Saxon Freemasonry and the history of Freemasonry in England is worth a read.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Red,
For my take on Saint Germain, see this link:

http://beyondtheblog.wordpress.com/2007/08/05/count-saint-germain

I don't think the Freemasons are that important in movements such as the French Revolution. Enlightenment thinking answers the motives here, and the naivety in the idea of the common will of the people for the Terror. To paraphrase a popular slogan:

 Liberte, Equalite, Naivete

I think one point worth considering in the movements in the essay is that they appeared in an increasingly secular, materialist world. Yes, they were a cultish shadow, but could that be because of the degrading of the mysteries of religion and spirituality? Did they just have to have a reflection of that, with the ethereal nature and secrecy of them, too?

Do you think the masons had an active role in the events to triggered the French Revolution?

Also, what's your take on Saint Germain, a favorite character is pretty much all the modern secret societies?

Some of our forefathers here in Mexico were also masons, like president Benito Juarez who had deep battles with the Church during the wars of Reform in the XIX century. And currently we also have here in Mexico a new "secret" group called "El Yunque" (The Anvil), a supposedly ultra right-wing circle formed among the members of the PAN political party (the actual GOP in Mexico), and of course, is now the center of a lot of conspiracy theories.

I suppose you're right in that many of these persons enter these groups more as a tool to climb the power ladder more quicky, rather than the "allure" of learning ancient wisdoms, but then why all the secrecy? Maybe because all groups that seek to gain power, in the end cannot escape the instinctive need for ceremonies and rituals, that trigger some dormant part of our inner psyche. And the most interesting rituals are the ones kept in the dark, the ancient christians knew that very well when they built the catacombs.

Hi Michele,
It's good to hear from you. You're very kind. However, a blogger speaks to himself without those all important readers, so thankYOU.
Your point is most valid. Indeed, I'd argue it is one of the main influences of history, and I suspect it began when people saw the vastness of the stars, and felt the awesome power of nature, and realised their insignificance.
I wrote elsewhere recently that we only became significant, as a species, by realising our insignificance.
Please feel free to comment again. I DO like to hear from my readers. You're all special to me.

Mr. North,
I've been a loyal reader of yours since I discovered your existance five months ago. Thank you so much for all that you bring to the public. I have the utmost respect for you.

I wanted to bring up a simple human need that I thought would pair well with this subject. If there is one constant in the history of mankind it is that mankind has not changed in it's viceral needs and desires. I think that one of the major reasons why groups such as these come about is the basic human need to belong to something bigger than oneself. We also, no matter how much some of us deny it, need people/peers. Perhaps some of these groups were started due to one individual's need to find others of like mind. The fact that they grow and blossom into something more grandiose only strengthens the fact that when people join together in cause, the sky is the limit.
Thank you again,
Michele
