Climate change seems to be hitting home. British insurers are warning people that, unless the government puts more money into flood defences, they cannot guarantee pay-outs for those affected by floods in the future.
Thousands of homes are now flooded annually in the UK, many built on flood plains where they shouldn’t have been built in the first place. But this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Earlier this year, a city briefly became an island.

And the danger to health when a huge sewage works was flooded can only be imagined. Hence, it is maybe time to look seriously at infra-structure, before it, too, is overwhelmed. And believe me, it will be.
At present, infra-structure is huge and national. Yet it won’t be long before floods could cause so many problems that it could break the entire national system. So is it now time for a radical overhaul?
There is an eco-slogan that ‘small is beautiful.’ I find it ironic that the concept, requiring smaller, more local infra-structure systems, may well be the thing that saves us from total chaos, as we forgot to act by the slogan in the first place.
