INTRODUCTION

Well, it’s THursday THirteen time again, and for this week’s episode, I thought I’d look at environmentalism, and see what steps we really need to take to save the planet. After all, the subject is in a muddle at times.
My answers may surprise you – they may even be wrong. But I hope it adds to the debate, and gives a few ideas about the way forward. Provided, that is, you think there IS an environmental problem. I do.

COUNTDOWN

13. See your future as a countdown. After all, with all the pollution, climate change and general detritus, the clock’s ticking.

12. Forget the doomsters who say it’s all gonna end in disaster. If the news is too bleak, people turn off – after all, what can YOU do?

11. Forget banning things, like cars, fun, etc. Those who demand such a thing usually have a political agenda above their environmentalism.

10. Play the eco-game as much as you can – recycle, save energy, etc. It makes you feel good. But don’t believe business and politicians are serious here. This is just cosmetics to make you think they’re interested.

9. No, to really save the planet, you’ve got to go out of environmentalism and understand the ’system’ that’s doing all the damage.

8. So what is that ’system’? Most think it’s capitalism, but it isn’t. True capitalism is a fair way of life. The problem is a multi-national run consumer society. This is empire-building, and you, and nature, are suffering because of it.

7. The ’system’ is said to not be an ideology. Don’t believe it. It is. It’s an ideology creating a few mega-organisations, and billions of serfs. That’s you, guys.

6. To save the planet, start with the politicians. All major political parties are funded by Big Biz, so they always put Big Biz before nature, and also before you!

5. Start mass movements to demand Independent politicians, divorced from Big Biz. Start local, and build up to national. Make it a media issue that we don’t need – don’t want! – political parties any more.

4. Understand that Big Biz only exists because of big ’systems’. Fossil fuels need big systems to maintain them, and only big Big Biz can afford this. The ’system’ therefore guarantees they will never be challenged.

3. They CAN be challenged. Encourage a new breed of entrepreneur who’s prepared to look at tech that’s been on the drawing board for decades, but is ignored because it doesn’t need big systems.

2. This tech includes better means of harnessing wind, solar and hydro power; innovative battery storage of electricity; cermanic engine tech for a new breed of aircraft; ground effect vessels that skim across water as fast as a plane; and eco-cars that can perform as well as present models.

1. All the above tech is eco-friendly, and does not need big systems, so Big Biz will be destroyed, replaced by a new system of smaller businesses which, as well as anything else, would be more accountable to you. And you’d live in an eco-friendly world whilst still having a car, travel, utilities and a capitalist system.
But would a new breed of politician and entrepreneur save the planet? Well, forget about saving the planet. The planet will always survive until the sun has burnt its last. We’re the thing at risk?

SAVE ME, PLEASE

Save me please, I’ve got a disease,
I think it’s called Man;
I am an animal, and we all have to scramble,
from our habitat so you can have Spam;
You destroy our calm, so you can farm,
and your denials are all flim flam;
You come and poach, and hunters you coach,
and with your rifle you go ‘bang!’
You really should stop, for nature will top
your efforts when it goes ‘wham’;
And then we’ll have fun, ‘cos we’ll have won,
and you won’t have time to say ‘damn’!

Excellent poem. I kind of like the idea of nature eventually gaining the upper hand. It shows our ultimate frailty as a race.

nice work anthony… i try often to bring common sense int this issue… i feel the more that understand it is not the planet we are trying to save… but ourselves… maybe eventually the real issues will percolate to the top….

  3. Hi Robin,
Too true. We think we understand the way nature works, but often we haven’t a clue. Hopefully we don’t have to learn the hard way.

    Hi Paisley,
Absolutely. When we think of the scale of planet Earth compared to us, how could we possibly think we can harm it in the long run?
But IT could so easily harm us.

I am one of those people who forget to recycle. Okay, I do not actually forget, I just get lazy. But, recently my neighbor “got onto me” (she is like another mom), so I have been better at it. I do not know why I am like this because my dad is the “King of Recycling.” :)

That reminds me…. tomorrow is recycling day. I have to tell my son to take it all to the curb.

  5. AND become a beekeeper! :)

    Happy TT Anthony!

  6. Very insightful. I have been on a green-up mission for about six months, but other than stopping junk mail, recycling, eating more organic and limiting my driving, I am not sure I have made great strides. It is certainly an issue we need to address, and I do wish there was more immediate action we could take to make the changes you list. Is impatience green? ;-) Happy TT

  7. Hi Chelle Y,
We have so many bins for this and that it gets confusing at times. Is this the right type of paper to go in here?
    I sympathise.

Hi On a Limb With Claudia,
Indeed. They’re getting scarce over here in the UK.

    Hi Orneryswife,
Not sure whether it’s green, but we could maybe do with a little impatience when dealing with politicians, business, etc.

  8. I’m trying to do my part. Happy TT.

  9. Hi Pussreboots
Good on you. That’s what counts.

  10. My New Year’s Trip changed me; I think we met after I got back, but I’m even more environmentally goofy than I was before. But really. You spend a week in those quiet spaces and you begin to realize how really precious they are.

As for banning things: I’m all for banning leaf-blowers. Use a rake or a broom; get some exercise and stop annoying every single neighbor in a five-mile radius. I swear.

  11. Hi Susan,
I live right in the centre of a quiet place now – a sleeply village just off a national park, far enough from the tourists, but close enough to enjoy. It’s precious, indeed.
As for banning things … okay, there may be exceptions :-)

Very cool list idea! Definitely some food for thought :)

  13. Hi Sue,
Thanks for that. I think we all need to think about the issue a little more.

If you read The Word Without Us by Alan Weisman you’ll see how quickly nature would reclaim the world from us. Unfortunately some of the damage we have done (billions of tons of waste plastic for example) would be everlasting.

You are so right that Big Business, with the emphasis on profits today, is the chief obstacle to healing the planet.

  15. Live modestly and sensibly and with that elephant’s future in mind. Right on here.

  16. A serious TT on an important topic. Thanks for sharing it. I’m a good recycler, but I know I use too much electricity. I wish that our government would take the money spent on “economic stimulus” and use it to support alternative power sources and “green jobs.” It would help curb our dependence on foreign oil and jumpstart our economy. But, alas, I don’t see it happening. Thanks for starting a good conversation here (and thanks for visiting my TT)

  17. We are big on recycling in our house. Every little bit helps. Great list! Happy T13!

What a great list:) Happy TT.

i try to be as green as i can be

  20. VERY good list.

    I too dislike big biz.

  21. I recycled some beer today. I feel pretty good about that.

  22. I’m more interested in the preservation of the human race. The only way to do this is through very active and ambitious space exploration and colonization.

I try to do what I can, not that I always succeed. But I figure, every little bit helps! Great TT!

  25. Good morning Nicholas,
Thanks for that. According to some theories, plastic is now entering the food chain, and is actually colonising our bodies. Now that is scary.

    Hi Sandy,
Very true. I live modestly and sensibly nowadays – and it’s quite life enhancing, too.

    Hi The Gal Herself,
Thanks for that. Unfortunately, though, I haven’t seen any western government yet do a green policy that harms Big Biz.

    Hi Adelle,
Certainly. If everyone did a little bit, it ends up a huge movement.

    Hi Lori,
    Many thanks for that.

  26. Hi Marcia V,
We can ask for nothing more.

    Hi Journeywoman,
And I think they dislike us – apart from our money, that is.

    Hi Myrtle Beached Whale,
That’s nothing! I manage that most nights, too :-)

    Hi SJ Reidhead,
We’re in agreement here. Watch this space!

    Hi Joyce,
    You’re welcome.

    Hi Winter,
    It does indeed.

  27. I wish we had the handy bins for recycling close by or that the city would pick up recycled goods to make it easier and raise awareness. I think a lot more people would take the time to recycle if doing so was more readily accessible here.

  28. Hi Nicole,
In most of the UK the local councils provide recycling bins for normal rubbish, cans/bottles, garden refuse and paper, so it’s automatic.
Only problem is, sometimes they make it so awkward, such as only collecting once a fortnight. The smells in the summer can get bad. And some of the bins are so light, they take off in high winds!
Why is nothing simple and straightforward with authorities, I wonder?

  29. Wow – this is a wonderful reminder of things we CAN do to make a difference. I loved your poem. You might enjoy the WW/OSI post from yesterday that follows today’s T-13 at Small Reflections … on Global Warming and it’s effects on Polar Bears.
    Hugs and blessings,

  30. Hi Storyteller,
Thanks for that. I’ll certainly take a look.

We all need to do our part. I’m increasing my awareness so I think about it more often. In the beginning I put the shopping bags on the seat next to me so I remembered to take them into the store with me. Thanks for the TT

  32. Hi Judi,
In the UK, supermarkets are just beginning to realise the problems with plastic carrier bags. They’re beginning to charge a small amount for them. This will catch on – after all they will make a little more profit. That way, Green is good :-)

  33. RAUFRAY said

    Good post

  34. Hi Raufray,
    Many thanks for that.

  35. green4u said

Love your post. I think that the “people” are only needed by politician to get blue or red states that is the only time there is talk about what we want… not that they will do it but they will talk about it. We all need to do our part though to help slow down or stop the ticking clock.

    http://green4u.wordpress.com

  36. Hi Green4u,
Thanks for that. Yes, politicians have contempt for the electorate, and need to be reminded they are our servants, and not vice versa.

  37. Definitely Big Business is the villain, funnily enough I was thinking exactly along these lines as I took the recycling out this morning. We can all do our bit but at the end of the day its pointless if big business and governments just continue along their usual paths.

  38. Hi Crafty Green Poet,
    So very true.
