Have you had a go yet?
Welcome to my Wednesday Magazine post, which includes an award.
So Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have been taken over by the US government. These huge mortgage lenders were just too big to allow to go bust. Even though they were at the forefront of the madness of recent years, they survive.
Well, they couldn’t go under, could they?
‘Big’ works like that. If a ‘big’ company like this goes under, it can cripple an economy. So becoming as ‘big’ as possible is a guarantee that, despite the mistakes, government will save you. But remember this – it is being too ‘big’ that risks the economy in the first place.
And here’s another thing to ponder. Super-capitalism is based on total freedom of market forces (as long as you’re ‘big’ enough to compete, of course). But now we know – when the going gets tough, the ultimate right wing goes left. Two words come to mind – hypocrisy and socialism.
Britain has a health and safety problem.
It isn’t that we are not safe enough, but that we are TOO safe. Indeed, health and safety regulations are becoming ridiculous, the latest lunacy being a move against ladders for workmen, and onto scaffolding.
Yes, I know some people fall off ladders. But there has to be a balance between risk and convenience – something that used to exist throughout life; when, of course, the people were permitted to use commonsense. But what has changed?
One answer is that such regulations are now used to control us more, but I also think there are two other problems. Authority has lost its ability for sensible risk management. Also, because we are living longer, we are seeing life as much more precious. Will the time come when this attitude means we can’t do anything at all?
Next Magazine post, Friday. See you then.

TT #21 – INDIVIDUALLY ME
I am me, you are you, no one else does what we do,
yet hold on a minute, be it vane, but don’t we look just the same?
You’re an individual, so am I, yet so many similarities I can spy,
So is this ‘me’ thing really true, or is it a way to invent anew,
what we really think we are, changing models as if a car?
The reality, I’m afraid, is much more plain, throughout history we’ve been the same,
The idea that we really are not, is a means to make us buy a lot,
so we can shape just who we are, wrapping ‘me’ up in a jar,
A consumer lifestyle is what it’s about, commodities of change are what they tout,
the individual a mannikin of sorts, to be dressed by fashion, its periods short,
so you’re constantly changing look, to the ad men an open book,
to keep the world growing like a tree, you’ve got to be you, and I?
Me

NOTE: Three Word Wednesday hasn’t posted yet, so no fiction at the moment. Call back tomorrow, and I’ll make sure I’ve a story for you.
CONVERSATIONS
I am me, I know it’s true,
‘So you say, until you’re blue’
Things I do, I work them out,
‘Thanks to conscience providing doubt’
With confidence I can get through life,
‘Thanks to ego, sharp as a knife’
Remembering things, no problem to me,
‘Thanks to memory, don’t you see …?’
Hey! This is my poem, please shut up!
‘Ooohhh! Along with muse, with whom you sup’
Such an annoying, pestering voice,
‘Well we’re in here, so you’ve got no choice’
At least with my love you have no say,
‘Thanks to libido, you perform okay’
But I am me, I know it’s true,
‘Thanks to us – and we’re quite a few’

Mary the Teach at Work of the Poet has awarded me with a Brainy Blog award. She is so kind, and I thank her for this award, for which I’m honoured. And now I must:
1) Think of at least 5 bloggers that you believe to be “Brainy Bloggers”
2) Post it on your blog for all to see! Let them know you’ve awarded them by email, twitter, etc or via a comment on their blog!
3) Share some linky love and link back to both the person who awarded you and back to Mommy Brain Reports.
4) Come back to the Brainly Blog Headquarters to sign our Mr. Linky and then pass it on!
I give this award to:
Brian at Truth Is Freedom
Paisley at Why Paisley
Selma at Selma In the City
Twilight at Learning Curve On the Ecliptic
Annie at Writer Chick Talks
I would also have awarded Sandy at Writing In Faith and Sandee at Comedy Plus, but they’ve already got it. The html for the graphic can be downloaded from Mommy Brain Reports. I want the awardees not to feel pressured into going through this little ceremony if they don’t want to. I simply want to say how much I appreciate them.

Hi Paisley,
You’re more than welcome, and it’s certainly deserved
Twilight said
OOOoh! I’m embarrassed AN! But thank you so much for this. I doubt that I qualify as in any way “brainy” though – enthusiastic and interested, perhaps.

I’ll proudly display the logo to remind me what I have to live up to – that is when I can get my un-brainy brain around how to comply with the requirements.
Many thanks, once again AN!
anthonynorth said
Hi Twilight,
You’re very welcome, though I disagree with part of your reply. You certainly DO qualify
Brian said
I am very honored to awarded the Brainy Blog and I will do my utmost to become BIG enough to deserve it.
Speaking of BIG, there is BIG disgust among voters over the government bailouts but nothing will come of that anger but more of the same.
anthonynorth said
Hi Brian,
which is richly deserved.
Yes, I can imagine the anger – that’s over the bailouts, not the award
writerchick said
Gee Tony, I’m speechless – thanks so much for this. I really do appreciate that you included me in this. And it makes me feel so smart too. You’re a luv. Thank you, again.

Hi Annie,
You’re welcome, and richly deserved.

First, thank you for the award Anthony. It means a lot coming from you. Big hug.
Now to your excellent post. You know lots of our ex-government officials were involved in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. You need to check that out. Another thing…Government doesn’t do very well running anything. I realize you already know that, but I have to throw that in at every opportunity.
The same things are happening here in terms of risk management. You are right, pretty soon we won’t be allowed to do anything out of fear. Over analysis equals paralysis. This is frightening. Why in the heck can’t we find the middle of the road and leave it at that.
Have a great day.
anthonynorth said
Hi Sandee,
The award is richly deserved by you. And you’re right, risk management is a mess. The middle of the road is such a sensible place to be, but it doesn’t allow campaigners to make their point. What we have to learn is how to listen to them, then ignore it

Love your TT, Anthony! Some of my students want Obama to win the race Nov. 4 because he has style. It’s all in the suit!
anthonynorth said
Hi Sandy,
I can believe that. It happened over here with Blair. Style backfired, though.
Hootin' Anni said
Happy Thirteening.

Hi Hootin Anni,
Thanks for that.

Yes indeed – individually you and individually me! Thanks for the prudent reminder as we move into our election cycle.

Hi On A Limb With Claudia,
Many thanks. And enjoy the election cycle. In the UK, we’re spared an election at the moment

Congrats on the brainy blog award! No ladders. That’s crazy! There are certain risks involved in many jobs. It makes more sense to make the workers aware of the risks and train them how to avoid injury than to take away tools such as ladders.
Selma said
Well I am delighted to be included in such highly-esteemed company. I want to take this opportunity to let you know how much you mean to me. Your well-considered thoughtful posts are a joy to read and often give me hope for a better world. You certainly deserve this award. Thank you so much for thinking of me. It is funny though, that on the day you awarded me this I had written a fiction piece about a dominatrix. I don’t know what that says about me but it has tickled my fancy (no pun intended).
I can’t believe anyone would seriously call a mortgage lending company Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae. Every time I think about it, it freaks me out. I mean, who was the CEO? Someone from the PIXAR studios? I like names that let you know what you’re in for like ‘You’ll Never Pay It Off Finance’ and ‘Miss One Payment And You’re On The Streets Home Loans.’ I like to know where I stand. LOL.
Thanks again, dear Anthony!

Your TT is intriguing once again, and you are without a doubt individually YOU! Thanks for sharing and for visiting my TT.
anthonynorth said
Good morning Nicole,
Thanks for that. And I couldn’t agree with you more about training for risk. Authority seems to have forgotten that. Madness!
Hi Selma,
Thanks for the kind words, and your award is richly deserved – dominatrix, or not
I’ve toyed with the idea of suggesting a change of name of one of the mortgage lenders to Fannie Won’t.
Hi Jehara,
Many thanks. I don’t think the idiots who came up with the idea thought of that.
Hi Lori,
Thanks for that. I’m glad you liked it.
Hi Bernie,
Many thanks for dropping by, and liking my post, of course.
Hi Lela B,
Thanks for the congrats
Yes, the companies are too big – that’s the problem. Once this downturn is over, it’s time to downsize these super-companies to more manageable proportions.
Hi SJ,
Oh, the safety regulations over here are getting ridiculous, believe me.
Hi Julie,
You’re welcome. And much appreciated.
Hi The Gal Herself,
You’re too kind. But thanks for the kind words – from one individual to another

FM & FM…Funny Money.
It used to be BS (which I thought it was). Now we have ISO, which includes traceability of safety standards.
We’re all individuals – something that’s not always acknowledged.
Sometimes we have to discuss things with ourselves.

Cool Stuff, perhaps you could downsize Asda, while your at it, they keep moving the stuff around so you never know where anything is. I don’t know what the weather’s like your side of the Pennines but over here in Manchester we’ve got the ‘Rainy Bog!’ awards..
anthonynorth said
Hi Stan,
Yes, I like your ‘Funny Money’ comment. In the UK we now have ‘elf ‘n’ safety’, as it’s become known by some.
Me: ‘Isn’t that right.’
Me: ‘Yes it is.’
anthonynorth said
Hi Sweet Talking Guy,
Thanks for that. I’d prefer to downsize Asda to the corner shop. As you’ve gathered, I hate Big Biz.
This side of the Pennines it’s – wait for it! – raining. Did you enjoy Summer this year?
It was a lovely day

I wonder if the consumerism isn’t in fact doing the opposite – making us all the same. All over the world, people are eating the same fast food crap, watching the same movies, wearing the same styles… Rampant western-style consumerism is the bain of individualism.
anthonynorth said
Hi Robin,
This is, indeed, what is really happening, but it is happening by convincing people that consumerism makes you an individual. It’s a massive, but subtle, con.

Bailouts are hard on taxpayers, good for the management that flung sense out the window and now wait for their feathered parachutes. Love the Gotta be me poem!! And ‘conversations’ sails right along. Nifty post!

Great TT and great poem! Thanks for stopping by. Sorry it’s taken me a while to get here. We’re preparing for a hurricane.
anthonynorth said
Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks. Yes, isn’t Big Biz lucky that they’ll always get a bailout where us mere mortals have to suffer for our mistakes.
Hi Forgetfulone,
Thanks for that. Now keep your head down over the next couple of days and stay safe.
