TONY ON CREATIVITY, TT #25 & MORE
Posted by anthonynorth on October 7, 2008
Including Thursday Thirteen and Heads or Tails.
Have you had a go yet.
Robbie Williams and Radiohead have joined a coalition to gain ownership and control of their music from record companies. I wholeheartedly support this move. Companies can have their profit, but it’s about time they got out of the ‘creative’ process. And I’m not just talking about the music industry.
From music to books, they seek to control.
Once upon a time, they looked for talent, nurtured it and allowed it to express itself as it wished, leaving it up to the creator to decide. But no more.
Now the corporate world seeks to control culture itself, with grey accountants deciding what will be and what will not. They are presiding over the death of culture. Indeed, have you noticed how, often, the most creative things around today are commercials?
Give culture back to the artistes. And let the public be once more amazed.
The FTSE fell 5% first thing Monday morning.
It ended the day 8% down. Was the London Stock Exchange in panic again? I’m not so sure. Now, I’m no economist, but am I alone in thinking there may be something strange going on here? You see, there seems to be a pattern starting to develop.
Over here in Europe, Ireland started it by the government guaranteeing a 100% savings guarantee – something that their economy couldn’t afford. Pressure was then piled on the British government to do the same, which so far it has refused.
Over the weekend, other countries provided a 100% savings guarantee – and as soon as London opened, it reeled, as did other exchanges in Europe, as any idea of co-ordinated policy disappeared. Do I sense an element of bullying here – a shot across the politician’s bows? Fall in line, or else!
Which is all very well, but if all savings become guaranteed 100%, and it still doesn’t stop the Crash, those savers will need those savings to pay to survive. Shame about the rest.
Next post, Thursday. See you then.

TT #25 – TO TELL A LIE
We’ve all done it, I’m sure it’s so,
told a lie to save a blow,
or maybe just a little fib,
so someone can feel oh so glib;
But once it’s done you’ll do it more,
whenever trouble comes to the fore;
It becomes the natural way,
as if encoded in DNA;
Of course we’ll say we certainly don’t,
but who believes you shan’t or won’t?
Maybe you, ‘cos here’s a fact,
perhaps for bad or just for tact,
but lying to yourself becomes a pact

WAXY AND WANE’S BLACK MOOD – Fiction
Waxy and Wane, the Sisters of the Moon, were having an argument. Their pseudoscholastic friend, Hyram T Zimmerman, had caused it. He had said there was no such thing as a black or white witch. Witches were witches, sometimes good, sometimes bad, and that’s it.
As a witch, Waxy had re-adjusted her pointy hat, adopted a manic expression, and proclaimed: ‘Well I’m a black witch, so there!!!’
This had sent Wane into a cacophony of cackle as she fell backwards.
‘And what’s so funny?’ asked Waxy.
‘You? A black witch? You’re far too incompetent for that.’
Their familiar, the black cat, put its paws over its eyes. It knew very well how this would turn out.
‘And I suppose you think you’re a goody-two-shoes white witch,’ Waxy retorted.
‘I am.’
‘Well I think you’re too thick to know the difference.’
This annoyed Wane. She’d been called this before, and when she’d looked it up, she tried to put a spell on Waxy. ‘I AM!!!’
‘Which proves my point,’ said Waxy, with a snigger.
Wane had had enough. Muttering an incantation, she suddenly pointed at Waxy, but the hoped for lightning bolt simply dripped to the floor.’
‘You call that a spell?’ said Waxy, sending Wane to the floor through pure witchey thought.
Getting up, Wane grabbed her wand, waved it about, and this time managing to produce a wind that sent Waxy scuttling to the wall. And so it went on for some time until Wane finally produced a spell of such force that Waxy was pinned to the floor and psychic hands went around her throat.
Luckily, at the last moment she grabbed the cat and extracted yet another life to save her. But as she recalled Wane’s blazing red eyes, fevered jowls and steamy ears, manically repeating again and again ‘I AM A WHITE WITCH’, Waxy thought that maybe she’d missed the point.

TO THE STARS
This is a website as well as a blog. The pages (top) link
to lots of essays in my research archive, written and
re-written over 25 years (many are excerpts from as yet
unpublished books). You’ll find a sample below. Why not
come back when it’s quiet? Or even check out the pages.
Astronomy is the science of celestial bodies, including the Sun, moon, planets, stars, galaxies, comets, asteroids and other wandering elements of the universe.
Concerning itself with positions, motions, distances, origins and evolution of the cosmos and everything in it, astronomy has many sister disciplines, including astrophysics and cosmology. But could it be that these sciences do not offer facts of the universe, but delusions?

I sure can relate to the TT here, Tony. Some sticky situations have come my way and the temptation has been to fib around them. But that only increases the stickiness….
anthonynorth said
Hi Sandy,
Thanks for that. This is so very true – and so very easy to fall into it.

Great….Waxxy and Wane…the witches.

Hi Hootin’ Anni,
Thanks for that. I’m pleased you enjoyed it. I’ve written before about Waxy and Wane, but never for HoT.

i agree there should be more control over what we do instead of others deciding and reaping the profits.
thanks for stopping by last week. sorry i thought i had replied back, then i saw you there still in my inbox today. i feel so bad!

Give control back to the artists. Amen!
Great poems – all of your poetry really is very clever. And Waxy and Wane are back. Yay. They are my favourites!
Skittles said
Ohhh.. I do like me some Robbie Williams!
I think we all tell those little white lies, don’t we?
The witch story is so appropriate for this month. My favorite part though was ..
“Their familiar, the black cat, put its paws over its eyes. It knew very well how this would turn out.”
Anna said
Loved your story! I’m going to have to read more about Waxy and Wane.
anthonynorth said
Hi Penelope,
Thanks for that. Loved your comment.
Hi Tina,
Many thanks. And don’t feel bad.
Hi Selma,
Yes, the artistes know best – and if they were left alone I’m sure many would make even more for the companies. I think Waxy & Wane may become a long term fixture here.
Hi Skittles,
Many thanks. Yes, that black cat keeps making an appearance in these stories
Hi Anna,
Thanks for that. Yes, there’s several more from Waxy & Wane to read.

The economical state of the nations, no longer a solo by the USA but now western nations in concert, gets more weird by the day. I haven’t the slightest understanding of how it all works, but I do get a feeling that there’s more to it than we are being told, or than we were told initially.
Welcome back to Waxy and Wane! Hey AN – those two need to go to Witch counselling for a bit of relationship therapy!
Will return later to read about the Stars – sounds interesting.
anthonynorth said
Hi Twilight,
Oh, and I’ve absolutely banned any form of therapy for them. I can’t have them being less outrageous
Personally, I think there’s a natural process going on in the economy. A bust had to come, and in order to survive, the monopolies commissions are waving the normal rules and allowing super-mergers that will end up with businesses that control everything. Very worrying indeed.
Still, we’ve got Waxy & Wane to lighten things up
Hope you enjoy the stars essay.

Great take on the theme

I’m so with you on giving the artists their creativity back. Everything is all about control anymore. As for the crashes that are happening…What goes up must come down. In my 57 years I’ve found the economy to be cyclical. To varying degrees, but cyclical none-the-less. Have a great day Anthony.
anthonynorth said
Hi Sandee,
Welcome back after your holiday. Yes, creativity is so important, but is being snuffed out. And yes, this will be my fourth recession in the UK and it is so obviously cyclical. And the longer the boom goes on, the greater the bust – as we’re just beginning to realise.

“creative things around today are commercials? Give culture back to the artistes. And let the public be once more amazed.”
I totally agree, but unfortunately the creative commercials are encouraged buy people spending their money on the advertised product, many of which seem to steal our creativity. I’m thinking of all the toys children have now. Everything needs batteries and does everything for the child including math and reading. I’m not anti technology, my degree is in computers, but with everything electronic I fear our kids won’t be using their brains at all. *sigh*
I love your Waxy and Wane story.
anthonynorth said
Hi Erica,
Thanks for that. I agree with you here. I love technology, but only where it is useful. Where it degrades our abilities to be human, it is wrong. In particular, it has taken away our need to be bored. It is when we are bored that we use our own minds to excel.

Excellent, as always. I’m thinking maybe I need a cat from which to squeeze – oh, never mind.

The idea of the corporate world controlling culture is interesting. I wonder how many personalities turn that paradigm around. I am thinking of the likes of Ne-Yo. I am confident our creative drive can out color the grey in this world.

Better way late than never. Guess what family reunion. Enjoyed your piece on the lie. “Grandmama always said you can’t prop up a lie.” an old southern USA colloq. Thought you’d find that interesting. Did you do the to the stars pic. neat. I totally agree with you on the creative property situations. Thanks for the read.

wow – that image below with the policeman is intense!

Good morning Autumn,
Thanks for that kind comment. Much appreciated
Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks. Oh well. And the cat is getting as popular as Waxy and Wane.
Hi Sandy,
I’m sure this is true – as long as some way they can break through the grey media screen the corporate world puts up.
Hi Lela B,
You’re welcome. Yes, the lie nearly always ends in trouble. No, sadly, the pics aren’t my own. One thing I’m not is an artist.
Hi AscenderRisesAbove,
Yes, it is rather.

Agree totally about the control of creativity. I have noticed this for some time.
Loved the poem about telling lies. Believe it or not the hardest thing to do is tell the truth!!

Sometimes lies are good when being polite. I’d rather lie to a person telling them something like- I like their outfit than telling them it’s ugly and hurt their feelings. Now if it’s something big the truth should be told. I think it necessary to consider the other person’s feelings.
anthonynorth said
Hi After Hours,
A very fair point – which we will all take into account, I should think.
Judi said
Little white lies to protect are sometimes easy, but like you say do they get easier once started? My sil exaggerates everything so we believe nothing she says lol
anthonynorth said
Hi Judi,
Yes, this is always a problem. If your reputation is gone, people are more likely not to believe.

Anthony, I find your words inspiring. The sad thing is, the public seems to be clueless that there could be more. MUCH more.
Waxy and Wane are always great for a giggle.
anthonynorth said
Hi Texasblu,
Many thanks. Yes, the corporate world has got culture so tightly bound up that, often, the public don’t even realise there COULD be more.
As for Waxy and Wane, well, that’s their job
