Have you had a go yet?
I predicted a short while ago that the Crash would lead to an abandonment of targets towards carbon emissions. Well, The Guardian has reported the European Union is considering the watering down of measures to tackle global warming. You can expect to hear more of this from now on.
The eco-message is about to die.
And it will die for two reasons. First of all, Big Biz has only indulged in cosmetic measures anyway; and we’re only playing at it. And I’m afraid sentiments only flower during periods of affluence.
Of course, the planet will be helped naturally by the Crash, as there will be a downturn in industry, and we’ll use less power and oil. But as a new system rises out of the ashes of the old, it is maybe time for thinking rather than sentiment – and place proper environmentalism as it rises.
Occasionally there is a reality show I like.
One such is Strictly Come Dancing, where celebs partner professionals and learn to dance properly. The show is hosted by Bruce Forsyth, 80 years old, still nimble, and the king of the game show since the early 1960s.
Still the best compere around, he shows the younger models what it is all about. But I am really delighted with the latest series, as the female dancer who is wiping the floor with the youngsters is 56 year old actress, Cherie Lunghi.
Showing the difference between a woman being a woman, and young women being girlies, her elegance and sex appeal is winning the day. And I am so happy about this, as television seems to be being taken over by youff – and most of it is awful!
We’re told we live in more lenient times, with bigotry a thing of the past. Well, this is not so. There is a general loathing for traditions, experience and everything else that isn’t ‘young’. And it is particularly infecting television. And, apart from the occasional touch of brilliance, it is turning it from a vitally important medium, to a load of dumbed down idiocy.
Next post, Thursday. Hope to see you then.

TT #26 – LOVE IN THE CITY?
The city and civilisation go hand in hand,
our greatest creation – Oh so grand,
yet above all else, love’s what we do,
but in the city, chances are few …
Why?
We’ve got corn, don’t be forlorn,
build a city, Oh so pretty,
shrine to the gods, we look agog,
castle for defence, we’re all so tense,
factory and slum, we’re so glum,
money in the till, so much thrill,
all about trade, greed displayed
the city should be our social glue – but it’s never been built for me or you

THE ‘G’ WORD – Fiction
He was stood there, the wind blowing about him, trying to think of the ‘g’ word. It didn’t come, so he thought of another – remembered …
‘Have you got any gold?’
He’d said it into the telephone repeatedly, manically. But to no avail. After all, as if gold could ground THIS economy – now. It had run on credit and confidence for so long – for so very long. They’d begun to believe the lie themselves.
But it WAS a lie. It couldn’t last. The bubble burst – but ‘bubble’ isn’t a ‘g’ word. He needed to remember the ‘g’ word he was looking for.
Greed came to mind. That was a good word – a word they could ignore, ‘cos they weren’t really greedy. The traders weren’t greedy, and the investors weren’t greedy, no one was greedy, it was all …
… just another lie. And it had ground to a halt – another ‘g’ word, but not the one he was looking for. Yet as he jumped off the building he suddenly remembered the word – it was ‘glide’.
But that didn’t work either.

MERMAIDS
This is a website as well as a blog. The pages (top) link
to lots of essays in my research archive, written and
re-written over 25 years (many are excerpts from as yet
unpublished books). You’ll find a sample below. Why not
come back when it’s quiet? Or even check out the pages.
Residents of the Hebridean island of Benbecula were gathering seaweed one day in 1830 when they saw a woman-like creature playing near the sea. Attempting to catch it, a boy threw a stone which struck it.
A dead body was found a couple of days later resembling a well-fed child with developed breasts and long hair. But most puzzling was its salmon-like lower body. Drawing a large crowd, the creature was buried in a long forgotten grave …

The G word fiction is certainly very topical and brings back memories of older years when some chose to escape! A haunting memory!
anthonynorth said
Hi Gemma,
Yes, it is indeed. Although I think if it happened again, it would not be from a sense of shame, but self pity.

Your thoughts and blog on ‘g’…made me ‘giggle’…but hey…it really isn’t funny, I know. It’s just your clever way of telling us all that ‘g’ can be good even if they ‘gouge’ our pockets from their ‘greed’. One day maybe we’ll all glide again with glee in knowing that the ‘greed’ is gone. But, who am I kidding…’greatly’ dubious.
Happy HoT day.

Hi Hootin’ Anni,

Greed came to mind for me, too. Enjoyed your take on the whole G word thing.

Hi Anna,
Thanks for that. Yes, it’s a word in many people’s minds at the moment.

It’ll be tragic if those in power do greatly water down plans to slow climate change. How could they be so short-sighted ? Sigh. It’s almost too late as it is, if they wait until the economy rights itself to put strong measures in place, it’ll be too late for sure.
I agree about the unfair way TV concentrates so much on youth, especially as a large proportion of viewers are likely to be well past middle age – the youngsters more likely out on the town, doing sport, or studying. Thank goodness for Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and old Brucie ! Glad to know that he’s still going strong.
Mermaids – yet another mystery! Intersting article, AN, thank you.
anthonynorth said
Hi Shadow,
Thanks for that. I hope I brightened your day.
Hi Twilight,
Yes, they’ll soon be claiming no money left for eco-measures – another disaster in the making.
And yes, Brucie is still going strong. Infact, after the first of the new series, he got someone’s name wrong, and the papers started claiming he was going senile. In the next episode, he did so many tongue-twisters the youngsters couldn’t manage it – and offered more than the odd piece of advice to newspaper editors

I find a great deal of wonderful humor in this post. I know all this mess really isn’t funny, but there isn’t much we can do but laugh about it. All the way to the bank. Love it. Have a great day Anthony. See you Thursday.

Hi Sandee,
Thanks for that. And, yes, when you’re faced with a choice, I find it’s always better to try to see the funny side. Let’s keep the Depression in the economy and not in the mind

Hi Anthony!
Is that Strictly Come Dancing the same as the American version of Dancing With the Stars?
The Heads or Tails G word(s) is not only great but very clever too.
Thanks for stopping by Penny Lane and commenting.
anthonynorth said
Hi Jean,
Thanks for that kind comment.
I think Strictly Come Dancing is the same. Is the one you mention the one with Len and Bruno from the UK as judges? If so, yes.

I agree with Twilight about the the change in direction in addressing climate change being a shame. But you are right about us using less resources as a result of the crash. I read yesterday that in Chicago 56,000 people have no natural gas as a result of being diconnected due to defaulting on bills. That’s a lot of people. The ramifications of people heading into winter without proper heating are enormous.
I liked your poem about the city. It’s true, love is hard to find in the concrete jungle. Your ‘G’ word fiction was grandiferous (one of my son’s words). Golly, you’re great!
Chris said
Hi Anthony,
There is so much ‘dumbing down’ and desensitising going on in most media formats in scheduling as well as in marketing/advertising delivery that two words come to mind, escapism and ‘G’reed. The ‘creative’ schedulers and marketers who could deliver aspirational messages to the populace as well as achieve ‘ratings’ appear to be a dying breed.
I guess it must be easier to try and sell ‘anything’ (’G'arbage) based on ‘nothing’ (credit or ego) if an appeal is made to the ‘baser’ instincts. If we don’t have to think we don’t have to act, only react, a monumental by-passing of social, moral and individual responsibility (a lack of ‘G’uts), then again, I suppose that we keep the greedy happy, or do we really? If most people/parents had to make a choice between wealth ($) or the health, happiness and hope of their children, I wonder which they would choose, as a hopeful optimist, I would hope the latter? I think its pretty self evident that happiness and self respect don’t necessarily come from celebrity status and associated ‘wealth’. ‘G’olly!, maybe ‘G’reed isn’t ‘G’reat, isn’t that ‘G’rand?

anthonynorth said
Hi Selma,
Thanks for those kind words. As for fuel costs, they should start to decline now as demand lessens – one piece of comfort in a quickly changing world. But I shudder to think how many additional deaths there will be this winter if we have a cold one.
Hi Chris,
I did an essay on modern media recently. It covers a lot of points you raise. You may find it interesting:

I have been living across the pond for seven years now but of course I remember Bruce Forsythe since the days of Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Cherie Lunghi used to do a series of coffee commercials ages ago and that was when I first noticed her and was delighted. Quite a delicious woman.

I hope that citizens will continue to conserve and behave in eco-friendly ways. Conservation at the individual level does a couple of things I think.
One thing it does is teach the next generations how to care for the environment, which changes habits. And those changed habits could ultimately change business behavior as new generations obtain positions of authority. They can’t all step across the corruption line, can they?
I also think that every bit of conservation helps.
But I have also been accused recently of being naive to think that one person can make a difference.

Good morning Travis,
You make some important points here. I wouldn’t call it naive. Often it doesn’t seem to work, but when suddenly a co-ordinated action comes, things change rather quickly – IF people have individually been thinking and acting that way.
Hi SJ,
Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
Hi Sandy,
Yes, love cycles always seem to fall under the routine of the over-culture they exist within.
Hi Lori,
Yes, I suppose there must be – I guess all writer/bloggers have a certain way of thinking.
Hi Marcia,
Many thanks for that kind comment.
Hi Stan,
