alpha-guru-typeGURU TONY – On what the eco-movement is and isn’t

What exactly IS the eco-movement? Oh, we know the various elements of it – protest against Big Biz; an attempt to save the planet; and don’t forget the nice fluffy animals. But I think there is much more to it than this.

Protest is all about symbol.

delta-flowers-2This is why environmental organisations spend so long trying to make the headlines through various stunts. But if the power of symbol is predominant, then it is more than simply saving the planet.
One theory is that it is all about creating a better society, rather than being about nature; whilst others argue it is really a new religion in the making, returning spirituality to a more nature-based form of veneration.

I think all these ideas are partially correct.

But at its heart, I think environmentalism is becoming a clash of paradigms – an attempt to change the worldview – the very way we think. And in this it has merit.
We live in a specialised world, where everything is broken up and compartmentalised into easily manageable bits. Opposing this is the reality of nature as being interlinked, connected, holistic and whole.
I’m convinced this is what really lies behind environmentalism – the idea that we should reflect this view of nature, and move away from the specialised, through which we are harming the environment.
But which of these systems is right – the holistic or the specialised? Well, I suspect neither and both. Neither is right alone, but working together we could finally get a balance, which is surely what nature, and the planet, requires.

RATTLER’S TALE

A Voyage of the Imagination

**********

TWILIGHT

Light is going, night comes soon,
Twilight heralding a coming Moon,
Casting shadows upon your world,
And into your mind, thoughts do whirl;
What was that?!! Undefined,
Was it real, or in the mind?
Think it out in the unreal zone,
No help now; no one to phone;
Swirling round you all the time,
Memories past, remembered crime,
Spectres of deeds come two by two,
Watch out! It’s behind you

street-1CASS NOVA’S BIGGEST CASE – Fiction

I was on my way to the airport for a holiday – my first in ages. And as a cop, I needed it. But Slimy Sam put pay to that. An informer, in his usual style, he just bumped into me and passed on. So I went into my pocket and found his note:

‘Here’s what to do to solve the case,
Happening soon, you’ve got to race,
Go to the funny place,
It’s happening by the face’

.

I hated Slimy Sam – he really thought he was a poet. And so, there was I, loaded down with my holiday baggage, an hour to my flight, and a case to solve.
Of course, I soon worked it out. The funny place was where they put on the comedy reviews, so I was soon outside, and looking round, I saw a shop sign with a face on it. Looking in the window, there was definitely a robbery going on. But before I could do anything, this 6 foot 6 inch bull of a villain, came out.
I looked at him, he looked at me, and he offered a sadistic smile. Thoughts of hospital loomed. Then I got clever. ‘Thwack!!’ And down he went. I was sure glad I’d brought along my biggest case.

TONY’S POETRY CHAIN
Call back Wed. See it grow.

Sunday ScribblingsManic Monday
Totally Optional PromptsThree Word Wednesday

TRUST THIS WRITER

Writer; linguistic illusionist,
Always in search of the perfect twist,
Can you believe what I say,
As I try to lead you astray?
Trust this tale in which I immerse?
You do?
But surely, not a tale; a verse

WORD FIRE

Linguistic sensation, sending it home,
Words with meaning perfectly honed,
Guided phrases to activate mind,
Meaning, story, in which to confide,
Writing, reading – satiate desire,
Word bombs launch, neurons fire

TURN THE PAGE

Turn the page, the story moves on,
Following the character, where he’s gone;
Turn the page, follow his trysts,
A bit of a charmer, he does entice;
Turn the page, it’s never a chore,
‘Cos the character’s a cad, never a bore

THOUGHT CATCHERS

Life is ours because we think,
Sometimes callous, we never shrink,
The writer sees this world of ours,
Catches thoughts, ideas he devours,
Persistently turned to literary delights,
Reflects them back, turns on the light,
Of social change that drives us on,
To interfere, define; he must never be gone

Have a good weekend Tony and thanks for the support. Having friends makes the pain easier to bear.

  3. I got stuck on your bailout figures and everything else went by the wayside. We are suffering here as well. California just raised sales and gas taxes to balance our budget. I give them credit for cutting some programs though. I just don’t see how this is going to create spending for the most part. Depressing.

Have a terrific weekend Anthony. :)

    Hi Anthony,

Re – “Selfish, selfish, I can be / Wanting, wanting, my destiny / But I get a buzz from helping you / So selfish is selfless, ain’t that true?”

What came to mind immediately is the Big Gov’t movement & politicians in general.

Re Afghanistan- I see this country, unfortunately, as a parking spot to enable a more efficiently waged ??? against Pakistan & her tribal areas. Also it’s now a toe hold in our game with Russia’s renewed interest in an expanded sphere of influence.

  5. Hi Brian,
You’ve got loads of friends here in the blogosphere. Feel the vibes. They’re there alright :-)

    Hi Sandee,
Yes, the figures are getting ridiculous. And the present govt says it is not going to cut public expenditure either.

    Hi Linda,
Ah, the growing Russian influence. I’ve always thought that the ‘war’ on terrorism has always been a slight blip in world history whilst Russia gets its confidence back.
A deadly blip, admitted, but a distraction all the same.

  6. Twilight said

I agree with what you say on ecology. I suppose the big biz, logos etc. are fine for raising public awareness – as was Al Gore’s movie and book, but the awareness which dawns needs to include a love and high level of respect for Nature – as high, actually, as religious people have for God. In fact they are probably one and the same!

You’ve managed some natty storylines there with 140 text characters (In the Tweets).
It must be quite a challenge! :-)

  7. I think environmentalism is at heart a paradigm that recognizes the interconnectedness of all things. I think this paradigm brings with it a PR strategy, a method of spirituality, and the whole package. I think it’s a good paradigm, and it’s exciting.

  8. Hi Twilight,
Thanks for that. In many circles, though, Gore has damaged the GW debate – too much politics. But yes, I’m convinced there’s a paradigm shift behind this.
As for those little Tweets, some of those take longer to write than my normal flash fiction. I suppose that’s why I enjoy them so much.

    Hi Sandy,
Yes, I tend to agree with you. Something is on the move – something we’ve been denying ourselves for too long.

  9. stan said

    Fashionable politics.
    Pantomime ending to ‘Twilight’.
    Just – in case.
    Words that flatter to deceive?

  10. Travis said

The big case to solve the case! Great twist! And so Nova gets his man and still gets his vacation.

  11. Chris said

    Hi Anthony,
I think that you are right, balance is the key. Thats probably why there is such a significant, paradigm shift happening now. It is now longer a choice, it is now a planetary necessity, and, I know which ’side’ that I am on.

  12. Hi Stan,
Thanks for that. I think politics is always ‘fashionable’, in a way – well, to some, anyway. And, yes, it usually has a pantomime ending :-)

    Hi Travis,
Thanks for that. Ah, yes, Nova always comes up on top.

    Hi Chris,
Yes, things certainly seem to be being forced at the moment. Hopefully Big Biz won’t do the total takeover I’ve written about in the past, and somewhere along the line, the people remember who they are, and use their choices, rather than the illusion of using them.

  13. Selma said

I can’t stop laughing at Slimy Sam and his really bad poetry. Too good.

Agree with you 100% about finding the balance in the eco-movement. But are we humans truly capable of the happy medium? I wonder!

  14. Hi Selma,
Thanks for that. Glad you like the little tale, there :-)
As for whether we’re capable of the happy medium, I don’t know. Possibly not. But then again, have we ever really tried?

  15. Rossa said

I agree with you Anthony and Sandee about the Govt not cutting public expenditure. Not only have the tax receipts fallen off a cliff reducing Govt. income by over 10% in January but in the same month Govt spending went up by over 6%. So that £2trillion figure is just the base line.

Then there are reports today that the Govt has spent over £800m getting rid of 15,000 public sector employees over the last 3 years with an average £60k pay off (3 times average annual wage). 2 Treasury officals are supposed to have shared a million pound payoff and then they try to stop the banks paying bonuses…get your own house in order Mr Darling, please.

But they didn’t bother to see if it was worth it financially i.e. a cost saving and on top of that they have recruited….yes you’ve got it…..another 15,000 people across all depts. Where is the logic in that? Get rid of the experienced workers and recruit newbies (money for advertising) that need training (more money), though i guess they will argue that their pensions won’t be as generous so this is “saving” the country money.

I wouldn’t trust this shower to run a bath! (and yes I did mean to say that)

  16. Hi Rossa,
Thanks for that. Over the years I’ve said a lot of things about this govt, going right back to 97, and rarely has it been good. And they continue to prove me right with every breath they take.

  17. devil mood said

We do trust the writers, don’t we? I never thought of that that way but I suppose we expect them to have a point, at least, whether it is to amuse us or reach out to us, etc.
Probably why if none of this happens, if we see no point, we don’t buy their books anymore.

  18. Hi Devil Mood,
Thanks for that. Yes, I’ve often called writers legal confidence tricksters. Gaining the readers confidence and taking them for a ride :-)

  19. Good point. Can we trust poetry to be true? Or is it just fiction? Somewhere in between?

Again, I enjoy coming here because it always makes me think!
    Have a nice weekend!

  20. Hi Linda,
Thanks for that. I must admit, I use poetry a lot to tell a fictional story.

  21. You always leave me with plenty to think about.

  22. Hi Granny Smith,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  23. “Cass Nova’s Big Case” had me grinning from ear to ear…so clever! :P

And I most definitely give “Trust this Writer” two thumbs up. (Once again, love your twitters!)

    Have a wonderful weekend~~

  24. Hi Fledgling Poet,
Very kind words. They are much appreciated. Thank you.

  25. Fun twilight, Anthony.

  26. Hi Nathalie,
Thanks for that. Glad you enjoyed it.

  27. Twilight is the most haunting of times, I think. The shadows, the active mind, the encroaching dark invite it.

  28. Hi Sandy,
Very true. A time of transition, change – always the most haunting time.

  29. Lilibeth said

Well, I couldn’t put that I trust the government…all this manufactured money being tossed around and spent on pet projects in the hope that it will magically heal the very real but also over-hyped crisis. gah! Crises are an excuse for totalitarianism; I distrust them. ah well. You are right. Do we trust the writers? and why, pray tell, should we?

  30. Hi Lilibeth,
An interesting point. Every writer has an agenda, a personal type of spin. In the history of media I doubt if there has ever been an unbiased piece of reportage.

  31. james said

    The weakness of “world-reformers”
This is the key to understand the weakness of world-reformers throughout the generations. They regarded man as a machine that is not operating properly and needs mending, meaning to remove the corrupted parts and replace them with good ones.

And that is the tendency of all world-reformers, to eradicate any harmful and bad in the human species —– and it is true, that if the Creator had not stood against them, they would certainly have by now cleaned man entirely, living only good and useful.

But because the Creator watches over His entire creation most meticulously, not letting anyone destroy a single thing in His domain, only reform it and make it useful and good, therefore all the reformers will vanish from the face of the earth, and evil inclinations – will not. They live on and count the degrees that they must still evolve through until they come to the end of their ripening.

At that time, the bad attributes themselves will turn to good and useful ones, as the Creator had initially perceived them to be, like the fruit on the tree that sits and waits and counts the days and months it must still wait before the completion of its ripeness, at which time its taste and sweetness will become evident to any person.

AN ~~~ Just popping in to tell you that there’s a wee Award for you at mine. :-)

  33. my thoughts on the twilight prompt were so serious until your words reminded me of childhood fun at that special time~~ thanks!

  34. Hi James,
Thanks for that. But as you will guess, I see it different ;-)
To me, any hierarchy uses the idea of good and evil in political terms, validating what they decide is ‘good’ in order to have a form of normality, whilst anything that disagress is ‘evil’ and abnormal.
This is where so much strife comes from.

    Hi Twilight,
Thank you so much for that. It’s lovely.

    Hi Qualcosa Di Bello,
You’re welcome. I always try to find some fun in most situations.

  35. Hi Anthony–
Outdid yourself is what you did, this week!
Enjoyed every tidbit here–and especially Cass Nova’s Biggest Case. You make us smile–

    Thanks for that–

  36. Hi Beth,
A lovely comment which is much appreciated. Many thanks.

    Interesting times.

  45. Hi Jim,
Me? I could sleep through anything ;-)

wonderful points on the environmental movement. Nature itself is both specialized and wholistic. What could be more specialized that a species that can only live in one damp pond, on one mountainside, on one continent — yet what is also more dependent upon the whole of its ecosystem, and the biosphere to which that ecosystem is tied?

  47. Hi Sue,
A perfect explanation of nature. There is the individual predicament, but this is as one with the whole. We – humans – have forgotten the latter.

  48. danni said

sorry to be so late – mucked up w/e for me — i so believe in the holistic perspective – i also believe the chief poobahs keep compartmentalizing and partitioning to keep us focused on their fleeting foci, elsewise they’d have to put some of their own morals and ethics into the brew and leave their crooked selves open to accountability – which soooo seldom happens — you can’t tell them about the elephant in the living room or the fact that they’ve been caught pants down as long as they keep you busy and slow with fragmented files in your mind — quite a pithy page otherwise, but i do miss little miss invisible this week – have a good week!!!

  49. Hi Danni,
Thanks for the comment. Enjoyed your thoughts there.

  50. susan said

Thanks for coming by Tony. How do you come up with these rhymes like commercial jingles you can’t stop singing? lol

  51. Hi Susan,
Thanks for that. I guess it’s just my style – how to explain it, I haven’t a clue.

  52. Bailouts….Wars…..Bailouts…..Friends in High Places…..

    Scary, these numbers.

  53. Hi Sandy,
    Scary indeed.

  54. I enjoyed the poems on the writer’s craft, Tony. We are not to be trusted!

  55. Hi Sandy,
Indeed not. Fiction writers are legal conmen, and factual works always have a bias. The fiction writer has to be so; as to the factual, I always look to many sources to help to form an opinion.

  56. Maggie said

    Tony,
I am unable to get to my curbside and so my trash can is placed beside a ramp in front of my house so I can get to it.
We have a recycle truck which comes each Monday so I put the blue recycle ben beside my trashcan and was putting all my papers and plastic into it.
    Guess what?
The men on the truck will ONLY pick up if it is placed at the curb.
I had my brother to just pour what I had put into the ben into my trash can and gave up on trying to do the right thing.

As for your Twilight offering…it gave me smiles as I thought it would be a great Halloween story to be told around a camp fire or semi-darkened room by candle light.

  57. Hi Maggie,
Oh, don’t start me on the problems with recycling, especially as, where I am, it is enforced by the local council. Predictably, bureaucrats are getting it all wrong.
Maybe I’ll have to read them the Twilight poem and scare them enough to run away :-)
    Thanks for the kind comment.

  58. Lovely Word Fire poem. Re: environmentalism, I agree – balance is key in all things. Happy Monday!

  59. Loved ur blog.I’m Deeptesh from the poetry train.Do chk out my blog 2 at deepteshpoetry.blogspot.com

I enjoy your fiction stories the most, follow by your poetry, though the pieces of daily news and opinions sometimes makes me wonder

“CASS NOVA’S BIGGEST CASE” is a fun roam, reminds me of the pink panther just a bit

  63. Twilight – ghostly, haunting, ephemeral – I love this poem…

  64. floreta said

always amazed by your prolific ability in essay and poems!

as for eco-movement.. it’s a give and take. “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean its better for the environment because while it may eliminate some things, it also adds others. and then organic is trendy. i know it’s also a valid lifestyle but to me it feels more like the ‘it’ thing than it ought to be.. would like to see it transcend..

  65. Hi Pretty Prats,
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Lissa,
Many thanks. Usually my Cass Nova stories are more serious, but I couldn’t resist this one.

    Hi Tumblewords,
Ah, I like writing anything ghostly. And the creepier the better.

    Hi Floreta,
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, a big problem with the eco movement is that so many elements become ‘hip’, and then the message is lost within the popular message, and valid reasons are forgotten within the hype.
One day Green may work out how to balance the process.

  84. wow with so many comments – how will you ever find mine??
I really enjoyed your 3ww poetry thought catchers – seems as though your writing is always something I enjoy – this one made me a bit sad about the human race – but so honestly thought provoking!

  85. Your growing chain has marvelous links…pleasingly prolific.

  86. Hi Amarettogirl,
Thanks for that. I always find the comments and reply to every one – they are all important to me.

    Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks. And your comments are always marvellous, too :-)

  87. Hi Tony, this is loaded! Love the poetry chain idea and I quite liked the way you got those three Wednesday words in.

I just realised I missed one of your posts last week so I’m coming back over after I’ve finished this little operation to read it if that’s alright with you?

Also, here’s a first for you:
    http://sewina.blogspot.com/2009/02/rwp-image-prompt-11-top.html

  88. Hi Andy,
Anything’s alright with me :-) Well … within possibility …
Yes, I enjoy doing the poetry chain, especially as I don’t know what all the prompts are before I start it, so it’s going into unknown country – makes it harder to do.

  89. I like the way you keep us interested in your posts day after day. You are doing good in poetry too, I must say..

    Bop it

  90. Hi Gautami,
Thanks for that. I could do each prompt separately on a post, but I just love the idea of the magazine post. If nothing else, it’s different :-)

  91. TC said

I like that you kept the poetry chain growing with each prompt.

Also, I agree about too much packaging and supermarkets. Actually, too much packaging and EVERYTHING. Have you opened a toy for a child in recent years? (No sarcasm, I really don’t know if you have or not.) Those are RIDICULOUS. Every little piece does not need 15 pieces of plastic to keep it held in!

  92. Hi TC,
Thanks for that. I’m enjoying writing those chains. As for wrapping, the best example is Xmas morning, and the mountain of waste of unnecessary manufacturer’s packaging. Unbelievable.

  93. Your “Trust this writer” post made me think again of the role/impact of any writer. I’m not sure I understood the poetry chain, though. Are you adding poems? Asking others to add? Either way, I’ll be back for your unique mix of essay, short story and poems is intriguing, connected and appreciated.

  94. Hi Bluebethley,
Yes, writers have responsibilities, I think. As for the poetry chain, I do this myself, beginning with a single poem on Friday, and adding as the prompts come in, up to Wednesday, hoping I can find linkage.
    It’s a good challenge.

  95. Returning. It’s like visiting a friend. Pleasurable! Also, enjoying your tweets and your reference to the memes. I’ll try to tweet or re-tweet some of yours when I figger how out. LOL

  96. Hi Tumblewords,
Thanks for that. Such lovely words.
As for my little Writer Alerts, many of the prompt sites have declining users, and i think we users have a duty to try to advertise them. And passing little ‘alerts’ like this around social networks could be the way.

AN, wow. I always love reading your site but sometimes I not sure I get it. I just love your beautiful Twilight poem but as for TOP. I confused. You do and say so much on your page I get lost. Great stuff anyway.

  98. Hi Melanie,
Thanks for the kind words. Now, it’s strange you said ‘lost’, cos that’s the subject of my next poetry chain.
I may get lost in that one myself :-)
