Bravery

What is Bravery? Sometimes it seems obvious – those who receive
an award for gallantry, yet so often such bravery is an unthinking
response – you just do it. Bravery of a true nature is when you have
time to think beforehand – which is the key. You can be brave for
standing up to the fight, or brave for standing down. I guess bravery
is a decision to do something you are uncomfortable with.

INTERSECTION

Two people meet, a boy, a girl,
An episode of life about to unfurl,
Intersecting angrily,
Surely not their destiny?
Intersecting sensually,
They’ll get there eventually;
Intersecting moods, man and wife,
That’s what it’s about, this thing called life

HOLO-STATE

Sci Fi: Roll up, roll up! Get your holo-husband here. No need to
feed, no need to suck up to his ego. Just switch on and he’s yours,
complete with variable sex settings … They looked back upon the
launch of the product with dread. Maybe they should have realised
they’d have had to perfect the holo-kid, too, before the human
race died out through lack of procreation.

SOUL MATES
(Updated 1200 GMT 7 June)

It’s gone again but it’s coming soon,
There it is! Now ahead – it blooms,
We’re always as one, in harmony,
Marching towards my destiny,
Two soles make a handsome pair,
Lose one and there’s nothing but despair,
But walk through life in goodness and stealth,
And surely the soul will look after itself

TONY’S MUSE DIARY

Him Outside got a little frustrated by a recent Time Team Special on
Channel 4. It looked at the conclusions of a six year dig at
Stonehenge, deciding that it was all about the ancestors. Linking up
with a nearby woodhenge, it was centre of a ceremonial festival
linking a land of the living with a land of the dead, and the River Avon
was central to the process. Now, Him Outside considers this theory to
be almost true, but the problem comes with natural lines in the ground
that aligned with the Midsummer dawn – hence the solar alignment of
the monument. So this was pure luck? He doesn’t think so, as this
alignment is true to hundreds of ancient monuments the world over.
So to degrade the alignment is incorrect. Hence, the alignment
theories, such as its a calendar or a temple, cannot be ignored. Which
bring Him Outside to the frustration. People in the past almost
certainly thought holistically. Everything was a ‘whole’, so the most
likely answer is that it WAS a temple, it WAS a calendar, it WAS a
place of the dead. It was all of these things. But the modern
specialised mind cannot grasp it.

    B. Muse, I think Tony is correct, and I think modern man doesn’t give the ancients enough credit for their knowledge and wisdom. A few years back I stood in the middle of a Mayan ruin upon a paved path. That path had been laid down, according to our guide, 2000 years before Jesus was born. I was astounded. It is in much better repair than many of our modern major thoroughfares!

  2. Hi Quilly,
Couldn’t agree with you more. I’m convinced the ancients were much brighter than us on many levels. Yes, we have great tech and creativity, but I often think we only live in half a world. The ancients understood its totality.
If only we could rediscover that, and place it alongside our knowledge.

  3. I think bravery is doing what one is uncomfortable with for the good of the people one loves. I think there must be a benefit at the end. But I do think a person can be brave by nature and act bravely without thinking, though a finer act is being brave after careful thought.

  4. Hi Sandy,
A well reasoned comment. Yes, bravery through thought is definitely the greater of the two.

    Hi Anthony,
I watched the commemoration of D Day this morning & was happy to see Prince Charles there- sitting between Pres Obama & PM Brown. Not sure if he goes every year, but his family was an inspiration during WWII (so my parents felt). Probably was my imagination, but PM Brown seemed somewhat offbase & detached from the ceremonies- maybe he will be stepping down soon.

I like Sandy’s & your take on bravery. I thought of the firemen on Sept 11th immediately. But honestly, I don’t know if they should of been that brave. So many of them died lugging all that heavy equipment up so many floors & probably knowing they would not be able to put out the fire. Hope this comment makes some sense- it’s not meant in any way to denigrate their memory.

Thanks for spreading the word re: Monthly Movie Musings. Most appreciated! I hope you will stop by to participate too.

    Hugs and Happy Weekend, G

PS: I like what you’ve done with the “intersection” prompt. Isn’t this a good one? :<)

  7. Loved the Holo-State in a scary kind of way. It could happen.

Have a terrific day Anthony. :)

  8. Hi Linda,
Yes, there were brave people at both events in your comment – so many. As to the commemmoration, there’s been quite a stink about it over here. Sarkozy decided he was not going to invite the Queen in an official capacity. Brown didn’t demand it. Many people, including myself, were disgusted. Prince Charles stepped in to defuse the situation after an invite was finally sent for a Royal. Two politicians with egg on their faces there.
As for Brown, he is distracted – hopefully finished. His party has been trashed in the local govt elections this week, six of his ministers have now walked out and there is a growing body of MPs demanding he step down.

    Hi Geraldine,
Thanks for that. I’ll be giving it a plug regularly. Hope it helps.

    Hi Sandee,
Yes, scary indeed – especially for my gender :-)

    Hi Anthony,
Watching the coverage I thought Pres Obama interacted more with Prince Charles than with PM Brown. Also the seating arrangements were interesting. Tom Hanks also attended & was greeted by our pres. He did such a fine job in ‘Saving Pvt Ryan’ & I was pleased to see him there.

On a totally different topic- have you written on the power of positive thinking or prayer that you could refer me to?

  10. Hi Linda,
I like Tom Hanks. He does a good job in just about everything he’s in. I’ve written a lot on positive thinking – it appears in many of my posts. If you scroll up to the link for Eye on the World in From the Archives in this post, you’ll come to a page with links to dozens of articles many covering this. About six lines down, you’ll also come to one on prayer.

Loved your intersection poem. Will it end when holo sex takes over?

  12. Hi Dr John,
Thanks for that. Hopefully the Holo Sex story will remain just that – fiction.

  13. KB said

Loved your poem. Thanks for sharing.

  14. Hi KB,
Many thanks. I’m glad you liked it. Much appreciated.

Sunday Scribblings seems to have disappeared, but there is an alternative, Carry On Tuesday. The new prompt is up, hope you can join us.

  16. Interesting take on intersections.

  17. Hi Keith,
Thanks for the tip. I’ll take a look.

    Hi Nathalie,
Yes, intersections can come in strange ways.

  18. Selma said

I can’t stop laughing about the Holo-Husband. Does he come with attachments? And more importantly, does he make a good cup of tea?
Thanks for the laugh, Anthony. You always brighten my day!

  19. Hi Selma,
Thanks for that, although your words on attachments worry me deeply :-)

  20. I will save your intersections poem and share it with my daughter when she is a little older. It says it all. Life so clearly and honestly expressed.

  21. Hi Sandy,
Thanks for those kind words. I hope it proves useful.

  22. barb said

The holo-husband is hollow, too. You can’t reasonably expect to get anything out of an empty hole, can you?

  23. Hi Barb,
Now, now, I can’t possibly agree with that :-)

  24. Jeeves said

Lovely intersection. Bravery I think is standing up for your own values.

  25. Brian said

It’s a natural part of us that concludes that anyone older than us must be less intelligent. :)

    Hope you’re doing well.

  26. Hi Jeeves,
Thanks for that. Yes, there’s a lot of bravery in doing that. Very true.

    Hi Brian,
I can’t remember, how old are you :-)
I’m doing well. Hope you are, too.

  27. Maggie said

I enjoyed your piece on bravery and also the OSI poem.

Intersections do come in many forms.

  28. Hi Anthony–
Enjoying the conversation on bravery. All kinds are honorable, but, I’m with Sandy–the ones that are thought through, weighing the pros and cons and the almost certain repercussions, and doing ‘it’ anyway–those acts always stun me.

Like your Muse’s voice today, although, I suspect if she had more of her own voice, she’d tell us exactly what those alignments are about…all multiple levels and intersecting purposes of them! She’s pretty wise, your muse.

And then your OSI poem. Have you seen Demolition Man? It’s pretty violent, but unabashedly iconoclasticly funny. You might enjoy it, especially the virtual sex discussion!

Thanks, too for stopping by my OSI submission and leaving your encouragement!

    Have a great week–

  29. Hi Maggie,
Many thanks. Glad you liked them.

    Hi Beth,
Yes, a good discussion on bravery on this thread, and my muse appreciates the comment :-) As for the film, yes, Demolition Man is my favourite Stallone film.
A kind comment which is much appreciated.

    Hi Anthony,
Here’s an interesting link to a Ripley’s Believe it or Not kind of article on the newest illegal drug trafficing method

    http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/viewer.aspx?issue=10472009060600000000001001&page=1&article=9c3b75d7-7709-4108-9ec1-d148e13b48c8&key=7mC%2bCaFGJDFVzeFeTHPSAg%3d%3d&feed=rss
The links long but will take you to a Washington Post article.

  31. Hi Linda,
I’m having difficulty getting to an article on this link. I don’t know whether there’s a problem with the link, or with my computer.

  32. Linda G said

    Hi Anthony,
Just tried the link from my post & it works for me. Don’t know how you access your blog’s visitors remarks.
It takes you to a ‘press display’ type page which shows the front page of the WP & then loads the article referenced. I really dislike the method- its cumbersome.;)
But if you can’t get there- it’s about Columbian smugglers who are building their own submarines & transporting their cocaine to Mexico this way. The US says it’s a hard method to detect & are concerned about other potential uses for this method of transport.

  33. Jim said

Hey Anthony, your neat little poem says it right. I hadn’t thought of boy and girl meeting angrily. It is good to see your rhymes again too. Those aren’t always easy.
    .. :-)

  34. Hi Linda,
That’s an interesting idea. Mindst you, I’m not sure about its effectiveness. First off, there’s the intelligence angle. There aren’t that many trained submariners compared to sailors. I’d have thought it easy to keep an eye on them.
Similarly, the US is at the forefront of sub detection, and this is in deep ocean. Trips up the coast should be easy if they took the trouble to try to detect them. And, of course, space and tech difficulties also hold problems. It sounds like a bit of novelty disinformation to me. But from which side?

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for that. I know when I met my dear wife initial reactions were very negative. Within 6 months we were married. That was 32 years ago.

  35. Linda G said

    Hi Anthony,
Found an Australian link to the article that should work.
Tell me what you think after you’ve read it- maybe it really is disinformation.

Love the Soul mate poem! I am so curious to see what everyone’s got on Soul mates, it’s such a good subject. ‘Lose one, and you’ve got despair.’ :-)

    G’Day Tony,
Excellent post. Intersection, Holo State and Soul Mates all fit this weeks S.S. prompt but I kind of find Intersectios a comfort.

  39. floreta said

like the wordplay of soles/souls.. both could definitely apply to the poem but the interpretation changes with the use of soles!

  40. Gotta tell you – I really like your Soul Mate piece -

    Thanks

  42. Lynne said

    Hi,
I like your philosophy on bravery. Good one, also for the prompt “soulmate.”
(I used to go by “Gel” from a blog I no longer have called Emerald Eyes.)
It’s terrific to be reading you again!

  43. Lynne said

    Hi again,
I thought I had read 2 poems for “soulmates.” I didn’t realize “Intersections” was a different prompt. Nicely done.

  44. Hi Linda,
I honestly don’t know what to make of that. First off, I can’t see any significant steerage or snorkel equipment in that picture, so it could be a fake mock-up. The Navy guy is definitely having fun. Why are they looking in deep ocean? They’d follow the coast. They look unstable so couldn’t land on normal coastal areas – the waves would topple them – so would have to enter through a river delta. No matter where they land up river, they’d have to pass a single point, which could easily be monitored.
Finally, they’d need hundreds to have a significant route. My best guess is, it does go on, but as a distraction. The US plays the game, hyping it up, so they can blame it for a failure to stop the traffickers in significant numbers. But as I say, this is just a guess.

  45. Hi Dr John,
Many thanks. I’ve got a big interest in such mysteries myself – actually my main area of writing.

    Hi Nana,
Thanks for that. Yes, it’s an interesting subject.

    Hi Linda,
Yes, I thought, for that one, better to tell it how it really is.

    Hi Floreta,
Yes, I enjoyed the word play on this. You can read it as both feet marching on strongly helps the soul.

    Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Whitesnake,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

    Hi Lynne,
Glad to see you back. And thank you for the kind comment.

  49. Hi Pretty Prats,
And welcome back :-) Thanks for the kind words.

    Hi Patois,
Many thanks. I thought for a time that Sunday Scribblings would no longer be a soul mate, but it appeared eventually.

    Hi Gautami,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  50. Great take on Intersections – well traveled.

  51. sue said

The two poems “intersections” and “soul mates” fit nicely together!

  52. Hi Tumblewords,
Thanks for that. And I often feel well travelled ;-)

    Hi Sue,
Yes, the prompts fitted together quite nicely.

  53. Dee said

Loved it all Tony. Intersection and Soul Mates kind of go together don’t they. Holo-State whew. Hope we never see that!
