A IS FOR ATMOSPHERE

Atmosphere is important to media. We bounce all kinds of signals
through it nowadays. But we forget how fragile the atmosphere is. It
is a balance of forces in a thin veil wrapping Earth in life. But it is left
to the media to define whether the atmosphere is changing due to
man’s insanity. I think the probability that we are is enough to stop it.
But maybe the people aren’t angry enough yet. Anger creates quite a
stormy atmosphere – and it is better to have the storm in our opinion
than in the atmosphere above our heads.

WEAR WHERE?
Modern fashion I often dread,
It appears such a slender thread,
Where do they wear it? I haven’t a clue,
Maybe they really need two;
And even then you can go very pale,
Wondering if it fits on head or tail;
But it seems to me they really pay,
For items that let bits go astray
MY HERO, MY LIFE
Fiction: Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life …
Copperfield would like those words, he knew. He sat back, satisfied.
It was the great question – the question his life’s work eventually
asked of so many, from Pip to Nickleby – even Ebenezer. As to
whether he WAS the hero of his own life, he summised that writers
always did, and always would, ask it – and not be sure of the answer
– for them, at least. But he was satisfied that he belonged to a craft
that inspired others to be theirs.
THE MONSTER
He creeps upon you mysteriously,
Somewhere else you want to be,
He’s in the world, doing bad,
Always making you very sad;
When he’s gone the world is kind,
He’s back inside your inner mind

After announcing my 1,000th post last week, fellow
blogger Dr John has sent me this symbol to celebrate
the fact. I accept this with many thanks.

Modern fashion seems to be very sparse and barely covers the model’s …are you sure that goes there?
Some days I am the hero of my own life, but other days, not so much.
And the monster in my head can scare me worse than any wannabe horror writer ever could!
anthonynorth said
Hi Jeeves,
Thanks for that. I’m afraid I couldn’t resist this one
Hi Quilly,
Very true – and there isn’t enough on those models anyway
Yes, no writer can conjur up worse horrors than the inner mind can provide.

Anthony, well said. A perspective from a writer, pondering another writer’s thoughts.
anthonynorth said
Hi Melissa,
Thanks for that. One goes into this territory precariously

We’ve a spend, spend culture over here too. More debt than ever. Our great, great grandchildren will be paying this debt back. Sigh.
Have a terrific day Anthony.

Hi Sandee,
They will. It’s a terrible legacy we’re leaving, and our children’s children will not thank us.

Re the Atmosphere – maybe the people aren’t angry enough yet It’s a sad reflection upon us that it’ll take a real tragedy of epic proportions to get us angry enough, AN.
I’m shocked by the BBC and their “silverback” reference. Racial and sexist slurs are outlawed, but age is still a free-for-all area for inventing discriminating names, it seems. Grrrr!
SandyCarlson said
Just thinking of how storms release so much that is beneficial into our atmosphere, clearing it, fertilizing our earth, making life possible.
anthonynorth said
Hi Twilight,
Sadly, too many of the up-and-coming people at the BBC are barely out of nappies. I suppose they’d class that statement as discriminating.
Hi Sandy,
Very true. Indeed, nothing is better for refertilising the ground than a major natural disaster.

Gotta fear those “wardrobe malfunctions,” huh?

Hi Bundleocontradictions,
Yes, it’s quite a sight to see

Happy to see the symbol put to good use.
My brother in law who is a scientist and part of the panel that clearly said our C02 was responsible for Global Warming says we also need to know that one great volcanic explosion would throw enough stuff into the air to cancel the effects of the C02.

Love your poem Wear Where… nowadays you don’t know how to wear clothes because they’re getting thinner and thinner, more revealing. Hope all is well.
anthonynorth said
Hi Dr John,
Thanks for that. I’ve heard this argument often, but I wonder if it’s right. Obviously, i’m only a layman, but it seems to me the CO2 released during eruption is part of a natural, active cycle of Earth. CO2 released by man comes from fossil fuels now locked out of the active cycle. Hence, it is above the cycle. I think that could make a significant difference.
Hi Michelle,
Many thanks. Yep, and it amazes me how prices rise dependent on the declining amount of material used

My husband keeps saying that it is our children who will pay for the economics of today. I have to agree.
anthonynorth said
Hi Gautami,
It certainly can be.
Hi Karen,
This will certainly be the case. We’ve let them down badly.
naramalone said
I guess writers do inspire people to be their own hero. Thanks, I think, for pointing that out.
anthonynorth said
Hi Naramalone,
I know, from personal experience, how much I’ve been inspired by some writers. Most major changes throughout history began with a book.
Tumblewords said
For sure – the writer does inspire and build heroes cell by cell and word by word. Good write!
anthonynorth said
Hi Tumblewords,
Thanks for that. It certainly seems that way to me.

I came via ABC Wed, but I play HoT, too. I really like your atmosphere comments. Having the storm in our opinion instead of above our heads is such a great line!
I had a similar idea with wear and where. But no poem like yours. Loved it!
anthonynorth said
Hi Lost Mermaid,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.
Hi Clara,
Many thanks. I’m pleased you liked the post.

Hi Shraddha,
Thanks for that. Unfortunately, though, I think it’s inevitable.

Not at all surprising from the Beeb I’m afraid. I’m all for stirring up a happy atmosphere although of late it has been somewhat clouded.
anthonynorth said
Hi Babooshka,
Yes, the Beeb is getting ridiculous. Things are a bit clouded at the moment in a lot of places. I sympathise.

I remember going to Boston to appear on American game show called JEOPARDY! I wasn’t driving, so I had my book buried n the World Almanac trying to learn something new. And for some reason I glommed onto the different levels of the atmosphere. It didn’t come up, but it was useful knowledge.
anthonynorth said
Hi Roger,
Thanks for that. The atmosphere is such a delicate thing – a thin veil around us – something to be looked after.
Jay said
The atmosphere is indeed a fragile thing, but the cycle of plant respiration and the water cycle keep it renewed and up there. The question is not why it’s still here, but how polluted it is, and how able it is to support mammalian life, in my opinion.
The scorpions will survive, and may end up inheriting the earth.
anthonynorth said
Hi Jay,
An important point. I’ve often said it isn’t the planet we’re trying to save, but ourselves.
Selma said
My fellow writers inspire me each and every day. Congrats on your 1000th post!

Hi Selma,
Me too – and thanks for the congrats

Atmosphere – you’d think we’d be interested enough to storm the nays. I like your new 1000 blog logo! Too cool. Laughing so hard at ‘wear’. It does boggle the mind. Enjoyable post, entirely.

Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks. I’m afraid many people still have their head in the sand like the ostrich.
Glad you liked the Wear poem
