BLOGGER BARD

Welcome to my weekly magazine post. Watch
it grow thru the week. You can opt to read
the essay, current affairs, themed mini mag
with fiction & poetry, or just read the lot.
Plenty for everyone here. Do call again.

MESSAGE IN A …

Bottles can contain many life-changing substances from medicine to
booze. Hence, they can have good or bad effects on us. The English
language uses ‘bottle’ in many ways. To lose one’s bottle is a lack of
courage; to bottle things up is to worry; a bottleneck means you’re
going nowhere soon; a bottle-washer is the bottom of the heap.
‘Bottle’ is a metaphor for so many human traits, and container for
much of the best and worse of us. And like a bottle we can stand up
straight or shatter so easily. There’s so much of us in the message in
a bottle.

READ MELD

Where does reading a book take you? Nowhere.
At least, not physically. Reading is to transport
the mind into the mind of another – the writer.
What the writer has achieved is a subjective
account of place, story or idea. Yet words are
insufficient as a medium. For completion another
subjective view is required from the reader. And
the two together transform the words into
thought, and if successful, action, thus
transforming the world.

FREEDOM

True freedom cannot exist – we always need rules to guide how our
freedom and excellence is expressed. For instance, you have the
freedom to excel in, say, football or as a violinist, but it can only be
expressed within the confines of a team or orchestra. What we think
of as freedom is actually a balance between freedom and unfreedom.
Lose the balance and we have totalitarianism or anarchy, the latter
still ending up as licence for the strong to dominate the weak.
Individuality can be counter to freedom. It makes you answer only to
the culture to which you belong, which is inevitably guided by the
powers-that-be. Important to this process at the moment is the
degrading of family. Traditionally, family is the defensive line between
the person and the powers, so ‘individuals’ do the job of the powers
for them. Such power in society forms naturally. Indeed, it often feels
like a conspiracy is going on. This is not the case – but the powers
need such scares so as to make detractors seem crazy. Of course,
you seem to have freedom, but totalitarianism isn’t total. As long as
you toe the line of the ideology they leave you alone. Hence you can
be anything you want to be as long as you have a mortgage, fat
pension plan, love shopping, wear designer clothes, buy a new car
every year and holiday often.

Sunday Scribblings

RUNNING

Engine running, getting us there,
Camera running – at Telly we stare,
Project running, keeping us primed,
Clocks are running, taking our time,
Everyone running from Bob to Tom,
What is it we’re all running from?

THE AFFAIR

Fiction: He’s having an affair – I know he is. Here I am looking on and
knowing his wife doesn’t know about it. And as for the other woman?
A real psycho. Oh boy, this could be trouble and I’ve got to tell you,
I’m worried! Well, I’m going to have to stop them – leave clues –
somehow put an end to this before it gets … Well, it could be bad for
me – very bad. I’m a bunny and no one’s boiling me.

I DON’T BELIEVE

I don’t believe a single thing,
To me only the facts can sing,
This I place with hypothesis clever,
Thinking it out is then my endeavour,
So I don’t believe scientist or priest;
I believe I don’t believe, at least

FLASH 55 – A METAPHOR

Fiction: I’m just a metaphor. Everything I do is to someone else’s
script. It’s as if I’m just a character in a story. Or at least, that’s how
I feel. Damn this life! Nothing is my own, even though I’m told it is. I
was happy before we invented the individual and I thought I wasn’t.

THE RUMOUR

The rumour started innocently,
Inevitably progressed malignantly,
People reacted perniciously,
Many died ultimately;
It became a truth indubitably,
And as always we behaved stupidly

POWER MAD

I got the power, you want some more?
Such meagre payment – there’s the door;
I can generate easily enough,
Don’t want to pay? Tough;
I got the plug – can pull it; you’ll freeze,
You’ll pay what I want! Yeah! I’m a tease

BIG DREAMS

Got a big dream, always have,
Nothing can make you so very sad,
‘Cos dreams that big just can’t be done,
Life’s impossible, absolutely no fun,
Unless you limit them by little dreams,
Go step by step, and then you’ll beam

BRIT NEWS: Children from poor
homes are a year behind in language
skills by age 5. Is this to do with intelligence
or a sense of failure?

GREEN NEWS: UN report says many Multi-Nats would lose
30% profit if forced to be green. Rubbish! They just don’t want
to adapt.

BRIT NEWS: Inflation rises to 3.6%, wage freeze imminent & Barclay’s
Bank make over £12billion profit! And they think Brits will stay calm.

HEALTH NEWS: UK regulator says councils will struggle to cope with
care of ageing population. So will we all, but we’ll manage it.

BRIT NEWS: Less than a third of juries understand a
judge’s directions. Then it’s up to the judge to
speak more clearly and make sense!

CELEB NEWS: So Tiger Woods publicly apologises.
I’m uncomfortable with such shows. It’s to

do with us?

I like Freedom poem the most.

this is amazing, u r such creative poet and it comes out like magic.

    Happy Monday!

  2. Hi Jingle,
    Thanks for that, and welcome.

  3. Freedom ….mmm…interesting word Anthony…as far as we are able to chose we are free.and there are two types of freedom..I often think of the many choices we make in our everyday life that show us how free we are. Our internal freedom is more important that the outer freedom (can a slave be free? in his thought may be he can be freer than his “owner”)……..to be from prejudices and wrong ideas when making an statement or a decision may be is the main purpose we may obtain in life…(?)

  4. Hi Sandra,
Deep thoughts on freedom there. I like them, especially the idea of a slave being freer than his owner. To get to the point of ownership of slaves, how much conformity has he had to apply to his life?

  5. Hi Anthony…there will always exist events or “parts” in our life that we can not solve because of our position in life (in family, culture, age etc) but to have the feeling that we are acting freer to the most we are “able” to act should be enough to “feel free”…(?)

  6. Hi Sandra,
Yes, I can identify with that. Freedom within yourself can help you rise above the adversities of any physical unfreedom – allow you to take it better; I suppose even feel sympathy for those who would oppress you – and come to terms with any physical, bodily, reason you are restrained. And that is empowering.
I wonder how many bloggers have this as their reason for blogging. I suppose I do.

  7. yes …you do…:) thanks Anthony for sharing…!

  8. Hi Sandra,
    You’re welcome. I love debating.

  9. Love your take on freedom. I concur too. I find that personal freedom is really the only freedom I truly have. Personal in that I make the choices. To smoke or not to smoke. To drink or not to drink. To go to church or not. To love and not hate and the list goes on and on. I’ve thought of these as my only true freedoms for a very long time.

Have a terrific day Anthony. :)

  10. Hi Sandee,
Yes, these do seem to be our only freedoms. So much of the other stuff is going.

  11. Twilight said

A couple of quotes on freedom I like are 1- Kris Kristofferson from his song “Me and Bobby McGee” Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose” and 2- Robert Frost: You have freedom when you’re easy in your harness.

I think you were writing more about political freedom though, AN. That’s a layer (or more) above what those quotes are talking about. As a previous commenter said, we can still feel freee within ourselves even if living under a restrictive regime. Unless a government starts brain-washing or interfering in some way with our thought processes, we can always achieve some level of inner freedom. The idea of having one’s brain functions tampered with is chilling….let’s hope nobody finds a way to do it on a large scale!

LOL! Your poem “I Don’t Believe” – could be re-named Sceptics’ Creed. ;-)

  12. james said

It makes no difference whether a person is the very best or the worst.Whether religious or secular, smart or unintelligent, a criminal or saint. No one in this world has freedom in anything at all if he doesnt have a point in the heart no matter who this person may be.
If a person doesnt work on spiritual development then he lacks any freedom of will and leads an ordinary animalistic life. Freedom of choice exists only between two points or two opportunities which consist of choosing between the spiritual and the material.

If a person doesnt have these two possibilities then that individual is left one-on-one with his egoism, along with all the values which are imposed on him by society. Therefore is there any freedom of will if a person is told what to do and want in life?
A person has the illusion of freedom only due to a lack of knowledge. It is similar to a child running back and forth in a room full of toys, not even noticing that he’s restricted to this one room, while his mother supervises the entire time.

I wish I had thought of fatal attraction before I wrote my bunny lines! (I’m sorry my dear, you’ll have to find another way to get even with your jilting lover. That bath water is a tad too hot for me.)

  14. Hi Twilight,
Yes, I was thinking more in terms of socio-political freedom, but the comments have certainly added to the subject. Some very good points.
Glad you liked the poem ;-)

    Hi James,
Again, I agree with you … mostly ;-)

    Hi Quilly,
Yes, we both had bunnies on the mind, didn’t we? Great minds, and all that … :-)

  15. Flash 55 made me smile out loud. Thanks.

  16. Hi Sandy,

Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

Was it a rumor that the celebrities are not paying their taxes? There is a website where we can check to see if those in our county are paying their taxes. Why would I want to see the problems of others? I would rather be sewing.

  20. Hi Karen,
Yes, I’m fed up of rumours in the UK. It’s become a media industry.

  21. I really like your “Rumor”…unequivocally!!

Thanks for visiting my H O T today.

  22. Hi Hootin’ Anni,
And I unequivocally enjoy your comments :-)

  23. Simone said

Yeh rumors can be very destructive.

The last point on Tiger Woods were my thoughts as well

  24. Hi Simone,
Thanks for that. Yes, what people legally do in their private life is no one else’s business.

  25. Freedom: good “F”! On the lighter side of it, freedom not having a problem is taking the last piece of pizza.

  26. Wise and true words about freedom! Love your words on rumors! And, yes, they made laugh! Feel the same way about Tiger Woods and all the others who have done the same thing in the past. Hope you have a great week, Anthony!

    Sara Cat

  33. Hi Shakira,
Thank you so much for that. It is much appreciated.

    Hi Rinkly Rimes,

The definition of Freedom is another one of those opinions that apply to all things.
We keep running because there’s nowhere to hide.
I believe the affair was just a rumour – a metaphor.

  37. Excellent take on Freedom! I think some people never get a handle on it.

  38. Your “rumours” poem is fabulous!

  39. Hi Stan,
So true – on all 3 points.

    Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks. This is the problem. Just because they appear free, they think they are.

    Hi Forgetfulone,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  40. Reader Wil said

Hi Anthony! Freedom is an interesting thing. It doesn’t exist. We have the freedom to choose a new kind of unfreedom. We are free to marry or stay single. If we marry we are bound to obey certain rules. If we stay single we are handicapped by our way of life as a lonely person. We cannot go out and find company whenever we want. There is no family we can always rely on and visit day and night. When we get older we have to take help from people we don’t know and don’t really like. Each free choice is a new confinement.

  41. Hi Reader Wil,
Yes, I agree with most of that, even though it seems very existential in nature. I guess it’s as I say in the essay: the answer is to find balance between freedom and unfreedom – if for nothing else but peace of mind.

  42. The United States is a “free society”, yet the sense of freedom seems less, with our so-called USA PATRIOT Act allowing secret courts, requiring certain warrantless contacts with bookstores and libraries to remain secret. The balance between security, which by necessity makes us less free individually (though, theoretically more free collectively – I’m not sure about that), and individual freedom seems a bit out of whack.

  43. Hi Roger,
Yes, this is the need for balance I speak of. As I see it, democracy has now come to the stage where it is not so much the people who are important, but the ‘system’ that holds power. Individual freedoms could naturally degrade in this imbalance.

Loved your take on message in a bottle. That was almost poetry.
Never thought about freedom as being a balance before – interesting way to look at it.
Running poem? If we did the running ourselves there wouldn’t be a need to target us for weight loss would there?

Metaphor – maybe the whole individual thing is a balance – like freedom?

The Rumour is still cracking me up – too true!

  77. Hi Subby,
Thanks for that. Barclays will, of course, say they didn’t take help from the tax-payer, unlike many of the others. But the general profiteering being made now is disgusting.

    Hi Dana,
    Many thanks. Much appreciated.

On “I Don’t Believe” — I think there’s much truth in this. How can we really know anything? Who is the expert with the final answer? Ourselves or others? I think the last line is wonderful because it reaches the inevitable conclusion of the poem’s line of thinking: the illusion that there is a “we” who’s thinking about belief. My favorite phrase is “only the facts can sing.” Very memorable!

  91. Hi Jay,
Thanks for that. Yep, I’ve heard a rumour there’s quite a few megalomaniacs in Big Biz :-)

  92. Ah, the mantle of a skeptic (referring to your belief poem). And it’s something I totally respect, the desire and willingness to poke, prod, investigate, question. I hope it doesn’t become a lost art — although I suspect it is in danger of becoming so. Thank you for sharing.

  93. Hi Nicole,
Many thanks. Yes, there is a danger nowadays of people not thinking enough about anything. Not only a shame, but it can also be dangerous.

LOL I absolutely love your 55 this week Anthony! Poor little bunny has to take care of itself doesn’t it?

  119. Ah, the sorry life of a metaphor. Now that you’ve gone and personalised them, I suddenly feel sorry for them…great 55.

    Running…its called the rat race…

I love the Personification of Metaphor, even though it is a noun to start with…:)

  121. Hi Akelamalu,
Yes, I’ll defend the bunny come what may :-)

    Hi Peter,
Yes, I suppose I do, too.

    Hi Mona,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

wow!!! you outdid yourself on this one. i enjoyed them all, deep and profound. please excuse me, i need to try to transport some readers via metaphor — or something like that.

warm smiles for a fabo weekend!

  123. Hi Jessie,
Many thanks for the kind words. Hope you have fun with the metaphors :-)

  124. Tsk! Metaphors aren’t “not”. They are more.

  125. Hi Alice,
Shouldn’t that be: are not ‘not’? :-)

Yes, my grammar’s bad sometimes. I put it down to leaving school at 15.

  126. Alicia said

    Interesting 55 on fiction.

  127. Hi Alicia,
    Thanks for that.

  128. ‘‘Bottle’ is a metaphor for so many human traits, and container for much of the best and worse of us. And like a bottle we can stand up straight or shatter so easily.’

    Love this, Anthony.

  129. Hi Julia,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Like the bit about bottles! LOL!

  134. Hi Jay,
    Many thanks. It certainly is.

Thats like saying Lord Nelson was just a sailor!
    Excellent 55 Tony..
    Brilliant and humble as always…
Thank you so much for the GREAT support.
    Have a Kick Ass Week-End…Galen

  137. Anthony,
This is wonderful! I love this: “What we think
of as freedom is actually a balance between freedom and unfreedom.”
I really enjoyed reading it. Thanks!

    Pamela

  138. Good heavens, you’ve had a lot of visitors to this post. I can see why. There are so many bits and pieces to this thought collage. Thank you for the invitation and for sharing this with me. :)

I think we are all running trying to keep up with everyone else running. Probably feeling like we will be left behind if we don’t run too. Time to rest awhile. I enjoyed reading your writings this week overall. Have a good weekend. Off to Mexico on Monday for me. Cheers. Rob.

  140. Hi Moondai,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

    Hi G-Man,
Many thanks. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Pamela,
Yes, that’s certainly how I see it. Many thanks.

    Hi Yousie Hime,
    Thanks for that, and welcome.

    Hi Loch Rob,
Yes, we always seem to be trying to catch up with someone or other, don’t we? Enjoy your trip.

You beat me to the ‘big dreams’. I wonder how many people fulfill theirs! It’s probably better not to aim too high. Or is it?

  142. Hi Rinkly Rimes,
I find it is good to have a dream, but go towards it in small steps. That way the disappointments are fewer and the journey to the big one more fun.

  143. Darling, I am doing a tribute for William,
    for his 6oth birthday,
    come and greet him?

    hugs
    shakira

  144. Hi Shakira,
I hope William enjoys his birthday.

  145. What are we running from? I often wonder. The desire to keep moving–seems to be a survival school of those of us who know what a cold winter is. Oh for a hammock and a tropical breeze to slow us down.

  146. I like your idea of little steps for big dreams. Makes sense!

  147. So many clever ones to comment on! I loved your thoughts on the word “bottle”, and I truly enjoyed “Running, and “The Affair”. Your “Big Dreams” hit me hard because my daughter got a major blow with a big dream she had this past week. You give great advice about taking little steps…life always moves forward.

I agree completely with your thoughts on Tiger Woods…have a wonderful week!

  148. Hi Sandy,
Anything that slows us down is okay by me.

    Hi Linda,
Yes, it seems to work for me.

    Hi Sweetest In The Gale,
Many thanks for the comment. Sorry to hear about your daughter’s bad luck.

hi tony, it is nice to watch yr blog move and sway to yr own beat…is that freedom…buuny stew…euuuuuuuuu….stolen love boiling over… believe, do you believe in a dream… what does yr heart say…it would be empty to believe in nothing…that freedom thingee again…perhaps i look too deep in the shallow reflective waters….

  150. Hi Pieceofpie,
Thanks for the comment. I’d argue by having a thirst to understand, the heart is full. At least, I believe that ;-)

  151. What you say about books is so true. That is the magic.

  152. I enjoyed your thoughts on Freedom. The libertarian “Tea Party” folks in the U.S.A. should take heed of this. They also need to learn heir facts In re the Boston Tea Party-it was about the lack of representation, not against taxes.

And what is it we’re all running to? Very nice rendition of my OSI prompt word, ‘running.’ Thank you. I noticed you had several non-OSIers likking it too.
    ..

  154. Darling, I really want to thank you ,
from the very bottom of my heart,
for coming over to wish William for his birthday tribute.

He was so thrilled and this cannot be done without YOU!

    You ROCK!

    Have you a great week.

    hugs
    shakira

  155. Hi Sandy,
Yes, books have a psychology all their own.

    Hi Edward,
Thanks for that, and welcome back.

    Hi Jim,
Ah, now, if we knew where we were running to, wouldn’t that be boring :-)
    Thanks for the kind words.

    Hi Shakira,
    You’re welcome.

You are one of the few from Sunday Scribblings that has found big dreams to be a good thing–something fun to try to achieve rather than a let down.

    Nice!

  157. Hi Chrisd,
Thanks for that. Yes, I believe in being optimistic – but sensibly so.

  158. Tammie said

    Hello mister North,
Running: you ask a very good question in a fun way.

  159. Hi Tammie,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  160. Ah, yes. It IS about the running. To? From? In place? Clever take.

  161. Hi Tumblewords,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  162. Andree said

As soon as I finished reading your poem, I said HA! I expected it the other way around, what are we running TO? So your last line was unexpected and thought provoking.

  163. Dee said

Sometimes big dreams are just too scary. Little dreams, little steps, easier to manage. The older I get, the less comfortable I am with change so I think I will stick with little dreams :)

  164. Hi Andree,
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Dee,
I tend to agree with you nowadays.

  165. Amity said

I love that romour poem of yours…and the wonderful rhyme and of course the thought of it…so very true!

Life seems a running spree…it’s inevitable…some want a slow pace but are more often forced to take a faster stride..why? To keep up with whatever we want to achieve!

  166. Hi Amity,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

    i like your poem…..such a talent…
i like the message in the bottle…it caught my eyes..which leads me to read more…
god bless….thanks for sharing your talents…..hope to learn from it…

  168. Hi Aniana,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.
