Welcome to my weekly magazine post. Watch
it grow thru the week. You can opt to read
the essay, current affairs, themed mini mag
with fiction & poetry, or just read the lot.
Plenty for everyone here. Do call again.

MICROFICTION

Fiction: He leaned over the bridge, looking down. He was sad. If he
hadn’t jumped all those years ago, he wouldn’t be a ghost yet.

YELLOW

A mellow yellow fellow, he was. Frightened
every time you bellow. Ego chased him away,
leaving a hole in my mind where caution
should be.

KNOWLEDGE

We like to think of knowledge as truth, but if this is so why does it
keep changing? Looking at the various knowledge systems throughout
history it becomes clear that knowledge is really an intellectual
reflection of how we see the universe. And from that knowledge
comes control – hence, society also becomes a reflection of the
universe. This is why a Godly society had a particular order, meaning
and direction. The universe was ordered by God. Today it is very
different. The universe is chaotic and the result of chance. Hence,
order, meaning and direction seem to be disappearing. But there’s
another element to knowledge. It decides how we think. A religious
society is more holistic, looking at things as a whole. In our
fragmented universe, this overview has gone, leaving us with a
specialized form of knowledge. This is why the Renaissance Man has
disappeared. And whilst this may provide great benefits, I’m sure a
holistic view alongside the specialized could help us towards a much
more balanced view of knowledge. I wonder if the universe will change
any time soon to allow this?

THE CRIME POST

It would be criminal not to read it

One Single Impression
ReadWritePoemFriday Flash 55
Three Word WednesdayThursday Poets’ Rally

COGNIZANT BLUES

Awareness going, stolen prime,
Knowledge lessening of my crime,
I really don’t feel here at all,
Released from my chain and ball,
Only to suffer more abuse,
Dangling from the Hangman’s noose

SOME CASES

Fiction: Sally knew some cases affected you more than others. As a
detective she was used to shocks but being called to THAT body
stretched her. After all, they looked so similar. Maybe she went on to
identify with her after that – it became a mission to get the killer. She
delved deep into the case and it was soon obvious there had been
witnesses – and equally obvious that the guy they’d seen was a local
gangster called Brad Jones. As her boss I tried to hold her back a bit,
then – call it intuition – but she was determined to bring him in. I
pulled his file as she went off. That’s when I discovered they’d had
history a long time ago – and that Sally knew a great deal about him
– maybe too much. And as I realized it could be a case of mistaken
identity, I raced after her, just breaking into his flat in time to see the
body drop to the floor. Later, as I debriefed Sally, I couldn’t help but
think it had been an assassination.

RUSHED YOUTH

Youth – that crazy, hectic time,
Growing up, young man, life divine,
World at my feet, so much to do,
Got so many memories – ain’t that true?
But also a sadness, you must concur,
Rushed so much, it’s just a blur

FLASH 55 – MUMMY DID IT

Fiction: I didn’t know which to investigate first – the site of the gang
fight with the pools of blood, or the sighting of the Mummy. Curiosity
guided me to the latter – after all, it couldn’t be for crime fighting.
Until I followed the trail of witnesses and the delirious, bandaged thug
led me to the gang.

WHAT SACRIFICE

I had a hunch I could get it done,
Feel the buzz, have so much fun,
Breaking in was a a piece of cake,
Caustic comments they all did make,
Taking their money was so very nice,
But cops were waiting – what sacrifice;
I guess it’s the cost of what I do,
But I’ll be out soon – see you

pen

TV WATCH: 20 Mar was a night
BBC 1 went mad. All normal progs
off – 13 hrs of rugby. Not much sense
left in the corporation is there?

BRIT NEWS: After spate of deaths, moves are
afoot to criminalise use of Methodrone. Good move,
but they’ll always find another legal high.

GREEN NEWS: Gender-bender chemicals in the news again. They
should be kept there. Sometimes global warming takes attention
off other risks.

BRIT NEWS: Chancellor: We will cut deeper & tougher than Thatcher.
Not that he’ll be in power, but let’s make those cuts in right places.

MEDIA NEWS: The Times is to charge £2/week for visiting
their website, ‘cos ‘quality journalism isn’t cheap’. So
why is The Times charging?

WORLD NEWS: America and Russia agree to cut
Nukes by 30%. They’d need replacing
anyway, & both economies are
cash-strapped.

Trying to get my head around what knowledge is, AN. We tend to simply accept it as something that must be correct and true – but really, is it simply the opinion of certain intellectuals, arrived at by trial and error and observation? Does that necessarily make it totally accurate? I guess it does, at least until someone comes along and amends or modifies it.

There’s quite a large proportion of the population of the USA who still cling to relgious notions and “truths” about the universe, irrespective of what science has told them. So I suppose, when you get right down to it, knowledge is what one chooses to believe – about anything.

“Cuts deeper and tougher than Thatcher”….Ye gods!! What a thought! That lady was true Hell On Wheels!

  8. Hi Twilight,
Thanks for that. I would add that consensus has a lot to do with it – decrees which intellectuals to listen to.

COGNIZANT BLUES: Well, he kept complaining that he couldn’t tap dance in that ball and chain, so they set him free for one last light-footed swing. ;)

RUSHED YOUTH: just the other day I wished I’d paused to enjoy my youth a bit more.

FLASH 55 – MUMMY DID IT: That’s exactly why gangs prefer a clean kill.

  12. Hi Quilly,
That’s one good tap dance at the end :-)

  20. Loved the fiction friction
    and the Mellow yellow.
    will return to masticate more.

  21. Ghosts of stupid deeds past indeed…although it occurs to me that if the ghost was leaning on the bridge, wouldn’t he just pass right through it? Hmm…I don’t understand ectoplasm.

And for twilight — religious conviction and science are not necessarily exclusive of one another

  22. Hello, Hello!
Hook, line and sinker! Very good angle! I have thought and heard said that reflections never end? Thank you for your great story! I enjoy all of your articles! Brit News, yes! Rushed Youth and the like! Thank you agian! Have a great week!

  23. Hi Jack,
Thanks for that. Look forward to seeing you soon.

    Hi Southlakesmom,
Ah, ectoplasm is a strange mixture, I think :-) Maybe the bridge was ectoplasmic as well?

  27. Hi Shakira,

  28. Anthony–
You have such skill at the micro-fiction. Have you ever explored a newspaper column for it?

I always love my reads here–

    Thanks!

  29. Hi Beth,
Thanks for that. No, I haven’t explored that avenue. I’ll have to give it a go.

  30. Enjoyed the whole thing, but the nukes at the end made me laugh out loud – some truth in there I think!!

  31. Hi Susan,
Thanks for that. Yes, there’s usually another reason below the surface for any political decision.

  32. I can’t remember your accepting an award, but I felt like giving you one anyway. It’s the Honest Scrap award. Come by.

  33. Hi Alice,

Our brain and intellect serve only to help us build the connections between different levels of the desire to receive pleasure and the desire to bestow. This is what our intellect is meant for; it connects various forms of desire.

Thats all there is …. nothing more.

Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Sandy,
Many thanks. I like to offer a good variety.

    Hi Marina,

    Hi Juliana,
Oh yes, I often find reality stranger than fiction.

    Hi Nessa,
I do like doing the more spooky tale. Many thanks.

    Hi James,

  49. james said

Quote – “Hi James, So your words are to do with desire, and nothing else?”

Fact everything in universe is a desire, galaxies, Planets, Living matter ….. right down to nano level of matter is all desires. Well i lie its one desire and we can make discernments with in that one desire hence different aspects.

What one desire is this? its Adam and Eve, the whole universe is adam and eve. We as humans on this planet think the universe to be huge. In reality compared to spiritual worlds its no bigger than grain sand to us. Its interaction of light of the creator and all the levels withing the universe that gives it motion and life.

Yes that means there is only us and creator anything outside this relationship can not be preceived.Yes means animals and plants are desires ,parts of adam and eve, even rocks, inanimate level, is a desire. The desire to be still. The creator guides us to were we need to be via nature. If we do not follow nature we are made to suffer until we come to right intention. Everything around us animals, vegatation, etc also suffer. Why because are we all part of one body. Adam and eve.

Dont take my word for it go see for yourself. See for your self how wonderful simple this world is when viewed from this frame work. All this was revealed in Ancient Mesopotamia.

We as individuals are nothing but desires , but we appear to each other as bodys in a world. We think we know whats outside of us , outside of our bodies, but we dont. Nothing enters are mind from outside. We only preceive whats outside of us by electrical signals to our brains via are sensors. Man is compable of soo much more than these 5 basic senses. We have 613 other sensors that are locked away with in our mind.I m starting to waffle now :D .

  50. Hi James,
You’re missing the point of what I said. If everything we can do is based on desire, then so are all your words. Hence, I could argue any theorist – including myself – do not engage in rationality, but simply desire. So no theorist – including YOURself – could ever speak a truth.

  51. james said

This is Excellent. You Hit the nail on the head there. Now run with it.

  52. Hi James,
Ah, yes, but it invalidates the idea about it’s all to do with desire. You and I would be running in never ending circles ;-)

  53. Reader Wil said

Hi Anthony, great post! What is knowledge? Talking to someone about religion shows that there are several kind of knowledge. Some people really believe that the earth is 6000 years old and can prove that.
Today an attempt was made to show how the Big Bang was caused long ago. I think that it’s very interesting, but it’s beyond my comprehension. I really need Wikipedia to read about it. There is at his very moment a program called “Earth investigated”going on. It’s on National Geographic. What is knowledge? What is truth?

  54. Hi Reader Wil,
Thanks for that. As I see it, knowledge is what we – or the powers that be – decide it is. It certainly isn’t truth, whatever that is.

  55. Love your Microfiction! My computer has been sick with a virus that didn’t get taken care of until yesterday afternoon, so I missed playing this week! Your post here for the day always has so many interesting items! Always a fun visit! Have a great week!

  56. Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for that. Hope the computer’s okay now.

Thanks for your visit to my kilts. They are still a mystery for me but I am going to look further to find out what the relation is between kilts and clans.

  62. Hi Stan,
Thanks for that. A good balanced view on knowledge.

    Hi Changnoi,
Thanks for visiting. Your blog is looking good and I’m looking forward to your Comic Strip.

    Hi Cacai M,
    You’re certainly right there.

    Hi Granny Smith,
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked the post.

    Hi Reader Wil,
You’re welcome. From my experience the relationships you speak of are very complicated. If I remember correctly, some of the brighter tartans were even devised by the English War Office for the Scottish regiments under their control.

  63. ADESI said

Tony, interesting take on crime and punishment with your 3WW.

(As far as WP, I have no control over it. Moving 3WW to blogger – or just buying threewordwednesday.com – I think needs to be done. I feel the need to grow 3WW.)

  68. Hi Thom,
Thanks for that. And I’d certainly be up for 3ww growing. It’s a great prompt.

  69. Knowledge is an especially thoughtful look at why and where we are at the moment. Thanks!

  70. Hi Tumblewords,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  71. Mummy Did It –
    “Bandaged thug”
That phrase alone made this one a keeper.

    What Sacrifice -
A crafty burgular piece. All these words on crime… is there a double life hidden there Anthony? Just kidding. Well done, good read!

  72. Jay said

Interesting thoughts on knowledge. Yes, it’s bound to be a two-way reflection between us and the universe, and I fully expect things to change again as we gain more knowledge of how the universe works. Our knowledge shapes our theories and our thoughts, and then sometimes, our ‘knowledge’ gets debunked and we have to think again. It’s not a smooth uphill ride!

  73. Answering two Jays in one comment. Cool!

    Hi Jay,
Thanks for that. Ah, a double life of wanting to be a crime writer, perhaps? ;-)

    Hi Jay,
Many thanks. I liked the way you put it.

  87. Hi Trisha,
Thanks for the kind words. The ideas just come. How, I don’t know.

  88. There seems to be less and less consensus on what knowledge is. There is a Creation Museum in Kentucky (or Tennessee) where you’ll find people walking with the dinosaurs. Is there global warming? And then there are the things that are unknowable thing on this plane, such as the existence of God.

On behalf of the ABC Wednesday team, thank you!

Rushed youth, only visible in hindsight.

  127. Hi Jaymie,
Yes, this is the case. We missed so much when we really lived, didn’t we?

  128. Felicitas said

Yeah, I would have followed the mummy too! Another clever 55, Anthony.

  129. Hi Felicitas,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  130. Fun, as usual. Crime today, huh? I just finished The Sonnet Lover novel. Can’t remember the author’s name, but I enjoyed the book/mystery. Enjoyed your post as well. Thanks for sharing it. :)

  131. Hi Yousei Hime,
Many thanks. I’m big on reading crime fiction, too.

  132. Your Theme Thursday and Flash 55 are both perfect! I love your style!
    I’m up right HERE

  133. Hi Susan,
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked them.

Excellent Microfiction and your 55 was brilliant. Who would have thought a mummy would be capable of such things. Well done. Happy Easter to you and your family :)

Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

    Hi G-Man,
Could well be :-) Much appreciated.

    Hi Nessa,
Many thanks – and I think you’re right about knowledge.

    Hi Jingle,
Yes, we lived but didn’t bother remembering the feelings.

  139. Oh sure. Blame it on the mummy. :)

  143. Hi Alice,
Ah, but many of those Mummys started off as Daddys ;-)

    Hi Monkey Man,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

    Hi Sandy,
Yes, Israel is getting so much wrong these days.

    Hi Pieceofpie,

    Thanks

My youth sure did rush by.

  146. Hi Buzzard,
Thanks for those kind words. Much appreciated.

    Hi Nessa,
Mine too. It just isn’t long enough.

  147. Laughing! One fine sacrifice!

  148. Hi Tumblewords,
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

  149. Just spent some time with Rushed Youth and Mummy Did It. I so like the way you compress meaning. We do rush youth. It’s too bad.

  150. Hi Sandy,
Many thanks. Yes, so much experience to have in youth and all we do is experience it, not savour it.

  151. holistic ways …yes I think the universe will change towards that

  152. Hi Sandra,
I certainly hope so. I’m fed up of disconnectedness.

Anthony, I really like COGNIZANT BLUES. I has me smiling tonight, even though the hero is all tied up!

I also agree with you on RUSHED YOUTH. Society pushes our kids to grow up too soon. You see it on TV and in advertisements.

  158. Hi Tammie,
    Yes, very blue today.

    Hi Loch Rob,
Thanks for that. Yes, kids grow up too soon nowadays. Terrible.

  161. Hi Tumblewords,
It did indeed. A great shame.

  162. [...] Anthonynorth: http://beyondtheblog.wordpress.com/2010/03/28/knowledge-3 [...]

  163. Hi Anthony:

Sorry I’m a bit late but I wanted to come by and read.

Your beginning essay about knowledge gave me cause to pause. I can see and understand what you’re saying. This part is what made me think:

“And from that knowledge comes control – hence, society also becomes a reflection of the universe. This is why a Godly society had a particular order, meaning and direction. The universe was ordered by God. Today it is very different. The universe is chaotic and the result of chance.”

I can see this being true to an extent, but here’s the thing: do we mean God or do we mean organized religion? What *is* a Godly society? Whose God do we focus on? Is this possible in nations such as the UK and the United States that are so culturally and religiously pluralistic? Such an interesting thought, leading to so many different questions. What are the answers?

    -Nicole

  164. Hi Nicole,
You raise a good point. I suppose I mean religion. As for God, I don’t know whether he exists or not, and I don’t think anyone does, or understands the concept. What we think of as understandings of God are, to me, simply interpretations that have caught the imagination.
As I see it, IF He exists, how can we, the finite, truly understand the infinite?
