BLOGGER BARD

Welcome to my weekly magazine post. Watch
it grow thru the week. You can opt to read the essay,
current affairs, themed mini mag with fiction & poetry, or just
read the lot. You’ll also see a linked essay and story from
my archives. Why not call back later to read them?
Plenty for everyone here. Do call again.

MICROFICTION

Three girls sang. Slaves threw themselves on
lions; gladiators slit their throats. Nero burnt
the house down. Too early for girl bands.

NEWTON

Keynes classed Isaac Newton not as the first great scientist, but the
‘last great magician’. He delved into all things esoteric & holistic,
searching for the meaning of the universe, his ‘science’ a bi-product
of his quest. It is to the disgrace of science that they try to forget
this, leaving us with a cold, compartmentalised, materialistic
scientific world that tells only half the story.

DRAFT

Fiction: It will be a brilliant story about …
well, as soon as I put the words down on
paper, to explain, they disappear – blown
away by the wind. I try to stick to the
prompt, but I can’t spell.

THE CREATION ACCOUNT

I’ve been fascinated with Genesis for many years. Over that time
I’ve asked myself a simple question: is it mere myth, or is there real
knowledge to be found within the poetic nature of the words? …

FISSURES

Stormy relationship; see the cracks,
If only we could turn our backs,
A brief respite to cement our love,
What’s that in the sky? A dove?
I yearn for peace – let them flock,
You’re angry, nature – I’m just a rock

AUTUMN OF THE SOUL

When Alan Jeffries walked into the nursing home to see his father he
saw the most horrific thing he’d ever seen in his life. For there, in the
corner, Percival Jeffries rested one hand on his walking stick and held
seventy five year old Rita Madden in his other arm. With a slight
shake of the body, he struggled to control his deep cough and spittle
whilst his and Rita’s lips met in what can only be described as an
awkward but definitely passionate kiss …

WONDER

I wonder what I’m going to be,
What is my ultimate destiny,
I’m sure I’ve not reached it yet,
Even though in my ways I’m set,
I wonder what I’m going to do,
What is left to amaze, imbue

FLASH 55 – SAVING A LIFE

Fiction: They said she was mad, saving her husband’s mistress’s life.
She just jumped in the lake and fished her out. Things changed then,
mistress dumped amid a new affection for his wife. She’d hoped this
would happen. You can’t fight a ghost. And it didn’t cost much to pay
the guy to push her in.

RANDOM LIFE

Everything random, ebb and flow,
Sometimes fast, often slow,
Negotiate obstacles, try to thrive,
Occasional failure, take a dive,
But whatever life throws your way,
Just make sure you’re there to stay,
‘Cos in the end the choice is yours,
Don’t give in – fight; don’t stop to pause

hi anthony, as usual, brilliant, u keep it up, u do a fab job :)

  3. Lilibeth said

…true, we have much to amaze us and the best thing to do is keep wondering what will be next to discover…a great philosophy and way of life.

  4. Brian said

Just think, it’s only one volcano! Makes the disaster movies seem very low-key.

Only you could link Nero with girl bands.

My friend Ann and I were talking about the air shutdown and she was mocking Brown for holding a conference. I mentioned however, imagine the uproar if he actually said, “Not my problem mates. That’s why I have a Transport Minister. I’m off on holiday mates, have a lovely time unsnarling the economy.”

  5. Hi B,
And it’s always good to see you.

    Hi William,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

    Hi Lilibeth,
Yes, it’s all about discovery. So important.

    Hi Brian,
I understand Nero once created a hot cloud over Rome. Good job there were no flights then ;-)

  6. Nanc said

Ah yes – I love the way the first drafts of any fiction can veer away and take you with them.

  7. James said

In the book, The Religion of Isaac Newton, Frank E. Manuel wrote that “Isaac Newton was convinced that Moses possessed the knowledge of all scientific secrets.” Dr Seth Pancoast wrote that “Isaac Newton was led to the discovery of physical laws (forces of gravitation and repulsion) through the study of Kabbalah.”

A Latin translation of The Book of Zohar (Kabbalah Denudata), was found in Newton’s library, and is currently kept at the Trinity College in Cambridge. Isaac Newton based his scientific research on philosophical principles. In particular, Newton wrote: “In my books I laid down the principles of philosophy that are not purely philosophical, but also mathematical, which can serve as the basis for discussing physical matters. So that they don’t seem fruitless, I accompanied them with some physical explanations” (Newton I., Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, 1686, V. 3, “The System of the World,” p. 501).

  8. Hi Nanc,
So do I. Always I have a clear idea where I’m going, but I forever deviate.

    Hi James,
Yes, Newton delved into most ancient texts to see what clues he could find, even – if I remember right – learning Hebrew to read in earlier texts before translation.

  9. Love your take on Microfiction today, Anthony! Great laugh for the afternoon! Hope you have a great week!

Your Microfiction was so funny. I LOL at the end, surprised me!

  11. Nero and the girl band. Great image!

Like reading your election news too. At least you only have a month of electionitis whereas we in the U.S. go through about a year and a half every 4 years…

  12. Poor girls. That’s what you get when you rush in. They should have known better about Nero. I loved reading your take on the image. Have a wonderful week.

Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Peggy,
I do like doing surprise endings. Many thanks.

    Hi Michael,
Yes, it’s starting to get a little boring already.

    Hi Rosidah,
Yes, Nero certainly let people know how he felt.

    Hi Bill,
    They certainly were :-)

    Hi Thom,
I suppose it would have been a din then, too.

    Hi KB,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

    Hi Stan,
    A great Newtonian response :-)

    Hi John,
    You have indeed.

  20. Hi Gerardine,
Thanks for the visit. Computer woes are just not nice.

  21. Maybe it was time for girl bands, but they were just very bad and Nero didn’t appreciate them drowning out his fiddling…

    well done, Anthony!

  22. Hi Southlakesmom,
Thanks for that. Yes, his fiddling was top … or else!!!:-)

  23. I laughed out loud at the ancient girl band — great take on this week’s photo! The Flash 55, wow, THAT girl’s got class and brains, and a husband who isn’t good enough for her (IMHO!) Another wonderful post Anthony – have a good week!

    Hi Wordwand,
Thanks for that. Yes, the ash is strange. Never known this before over here.

    Hi Jabblog,
    Terrible, aren’t they :-)

  27. Kristine said

ah, clever take on the picture. have a happy week.

  28. Hi Kristine,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  29. Nero and Newton–all good.
But I loved the nursing home romance the best.

    You are a remarkable connoisseur…

    Thank you, Anthony!

  30. Hi Beth,
Many thanks for the kind words. Makes it all worthwhile.

  31. Dee said

I guess the Romans would not appreciate “The Runaways”. I didn’t relaize that about Newton – I think I would have liked to have known him. Draft – so very true! Autumn of the Soul? Yikes. That paints a picture!

Wonder – isn’t it great that we can still be growing after all these years?
Saving a Life – Clever lady!

We’ve a group of ladies – a mission team that flew to England and are now stranded because of the ash cloud. I hope that it isn’t affecting those of you on the ground.

  32. Hi Dee,
Thanks for the great comments. The cloud is staying up in the air – hardly any effects on the ground at all.

  33. Twilight said

We need another Newton, don’t we AN? Badly!

I usually don’t have a lot of time for Dawkins and Hitchens but this current news (re the Pope) shows they have their uses. ;-)

Genesis – ah yes. If somebody wrote it today it’d be classed as surrealism. Surrealism does have its roots in truth though, or a certain person’s view of truth (as in Dali’s paintings). Not sure where that thought got me, but I’ll leave it in anyway. ;-)

  34. Hi Twilight,
Ah, truth. I’m not sure what I think it is today, but I’m sure it’ll be different from what I think it will be tomorrow ;-)
Yes, we certainly need another Newton – ain’t that the truth.

  35. Grandma said

Sounds as if there won’t be a repeat performance for that girl band. Thanks for the smile.

  36. Hi Grandma,
    Hopefully not :-)
    Thanks for that.

Flash 55 — I, too, think she was crazy. Should have handed hubby a rock and pushed him in.

  47. shakira said

Anthony, you know I love you and I have read it again and again. Even the comments. I do not quite get it… she saved her and they are lovers now? then what happened? you packed it real tight! hugs shakira

  48. Hi Quilly,
Thanks for the kind words about the Microfiction. Much appreciated.

    Hi Shakira,
Don’t worry, even many who did get it didn’t feel right with this one :-)
I guess the main point I was trying to make is that a living person cannot compete with a cherished dead one when it comes to a person’s affections.

  49. Zephyr said

Autumn of the Sould was brilliant. I couldn’t hlep smiling at Alan’s plight when he discovered the status of his credit card! Microfiction was great as usual. Enjoyed it all!

  50. Hi Zephyr,
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, his face would be a picture.

  51. Always learn something here, get a smile, find something humorous, something to think about and it’s always a great visit! Hope your week is going well, Anthony.

    Sylvia

  52. Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for that comment. Makes it all worthwhile.

  53. The newton is the unit of force derived in the SI system; it is equal to the amount of force required to accelerate a mass of one kilogram at a rate of one meter per second per second. In dimensional analysis, F=ma, multiplying m (kg) by a (m/s2), the dimension for 1 newton unit is therefore:

    N=(kg X m)/s2) with the s2 really being s squared.

But you knew that already, because you’re that kind of guy.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, the old guys did well there ;-)

  59. Jay said

Ah yes, Newton was an alchemist, wasn’t he? And a mathematician. An odd combination, to be sure, but perhaps denotes a real zest for the variety of life. We don’t live a million miles from Woolsthorpe!

I believe some flights are taking off again now, but it will affect the economy. Anything which causes airlines to lose money will put fares up, and maybe employment/wages down. And businesses will have suffered from having employees stuck in foreign countries and loss of business too. Can’t be helped though, can it?

  60. Hi Jay,
Yes, Newton wrote over a million words on alchemy. Infact, most of the sciences came from such esoteric disciplines – alchemy led to chemistry, astrology to astronomy, magical ritual formed the first understanding of psychology … the list goes on and on; and all ignored by science.
Oh yes, there’ll be an economic price for the ash cloud.

    Hi Anthony,

It must take you absolutely ages to compile all this work into a weekly post!! Excellent work again, and thanks for the lib dem story. I heard one yesterday Nick Clegg trying to differentiate himself from other mp’s claiming tax payers money from second homes. And all the while he claimed £2.99 for a cake tin…I wonder if he had holes in HIS pockets that day…

    Reel Wisdom

  86. I think I enjoyed “Wonder” the most, but “Fissures” was very clever. The “Random Life” piece was a great take on the prompt, “negotiate obstacles” was a creative use for that word.

  87. Newton also left a much bigger impression than most of the specialists who followed him.

  88. jessie said

your draft work is usually how i feel when i attempt to write.

  89. Hi AD,
Thanks for that. Hope it’s worthwhile :-)

    Hi Alice,
He did indeed. Infact, many theorise he was instrumental in bringing in the modern world.

    Hi Jessie,
I often feel like that, too.

  90. ishabelle said

“The Wonder” was absolutely nice… yes, i often wonder too, what else is our purpose here… :)

  122. Your writing constantly inspires me to keep on, Anthony. The shock and surprise and wonder of your work this week made me laugh (flash fiction: she paid someone to push the mistress!). “I wonder what I’m going to be” says none of us are really “finished”. Thank you!

Microfiction was a hoot. What does it take to distract the masses?

Your thoughts on Newton were spot on. There is so much wonder – and inquiry has become so narrowly focused.

    Wishing you a good week!

  132. Hi Gabrielle,
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, wonder is disappearing from our intellectuals, isn’t it?

  133. Oh, dang. Fissures is so real! Love it…

We can’t really avoid some fissures in our relationships with others, but through them, we can make better with it!

On your “wonder” post! I could only smile Anthony…I believed you must have lived a happy full life now, but human nature dictates, there’s no contentment at all! We crave and crave till our last breath! Well, just my opinion, though!

    For OSI,
lovely writeup.. there are cracks in every relation, and being a rock to anger is always optional i think!

    For Flash55,
that was an unexpected yet expected ending :) 55 words, yet wonderfuly narrated..!

    For 3WW,
the rhyme was the best part, made it flow more than ever.. beautiful..!

  138. Hi Amity,
Thanks for that – and it’s a strange thing about us that we can never really be happy without those cravings. After all, it is reaching one that gives us our greatest high.

    Hi Leo,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Yes- relationships can most certainly have fissures. Some small and others tend to grow wider! Nice take on the prompt~

Hi Anthony, just rolled in from a long trip back from Shanghai. I enjoyed your piece “Fissures”. How the fissures shape our lives. Glad to be back in the States. Just sipping some Cabernet after 30 hours of travel. My best, Rob.

  145. Hi Loch Rob,
Thanks for that. Enjoy your drink.
