POLLY TICKS

Welcome to my weekly magazine post. Watch
it grow thru the week. You can opt to read the essay,
current affairs, themed mini mag with fiction & poetry, or just
read the lot. Here’s hoping you enjoy your visit. Plenty
for everyone here so do call again next week.

I’m now on Facebook

MICROFICTION

Fiction: She had dreamt of her child’s
future, her success, up among the stars.
But instead she got a celebrity.

BOLSHY

I’m fed up of hearing people say that all politicians in a Parliament
should work together. One reason people say this is they don’t get the
difference between a Parliament and a Government. A government runs
a country; a parliament decides law. Politicians in government should
work together, fair enough, but if all politicians in a parliament worked
together, there would never be such a thing as a debate. Hence, new
law wouldn’t have been tested and would be bad. Similarly, working
together would mean a continual form of government where nothing
ever changed and it would be totalitarian. I don’t want the politicians
to work together. I want them bolshy, angry; even at times extreme.
In that way a government is always challenged and our freedoms are
better preserved.

LIGHT

Light is comforting, reassuring. To see the
light is to have knowledge. In both instances
it defeats the dark – of ignorance and night.
Which is why it devastated storytelling. You
could always rely on a good old ghost story
to scare you before the electric light.

BRIT NEWS: New Army Chief
says forces shouldn’t prop up ailing
arms industry. Quite agree but relationship
has changed. Once industry provided for Army. Now
the other way round.

WORLD NEWS: Cameron warns Britain can no longer rely on ‘special
relationship’ with America. I think this is true. Whilst a bond will always
exist with the American people, recent administrations seem to think
they rule the world.

BRIT NEWS: Treasury and Ministry of Defence are in conflict over
Trident replacement. If we have to have one, shouldn’t it be
military choice? Far too expensive anyway. There are
cheaper alternatives.

BRIT NEWS: As French vote to ban burqa Brit
immigration minister says it would be un-
British to ban it here. Except for certain
security problems I totally agree, but
would he have said it if France
wasn’t banning it?

COCOON

Transformative period, makes you think,
Focus attention, never blink,
Soon it will burst upon reality,
May be good, or possible insanity,
This is how a universe grows,
As ideas burst and the thinker glows

FLASH 55 – AFTERPOWER

Sci fi: The old fossils had gone. Earth was recovering, reconnecting
with its consciousness, its afterlife. The living could be nothing without
it, used properly, as comfort instead of as power. They should have
realized when the first rig blew. They sucked deep into the planet spirit
and the afterlife spewed, enveloping the Earth, leaving it haunted.

TITLES

Man had colonised Sol’s dear orbs,
Air tight City Domes, all over daubed,
But who’d win the title for the best?
Which planet could really impress?
Mercuris would simply melt away, Venusians under a cloud they’d stay,
Martians, warlike? They turn to dust; Jupitans were all gas; no fuss,
Saturnine peacocks show off their rings, neptoos sink as they swim,
Plutans left out in the cold and sparse, Uranusans so much up their …
Well …
Earthers would win, you’d think, no doubt,
Shame they went and wiped themselves out

JUST ANOTHER NIGHT

Sci fi: The alien looked at the humans through her bug-like eyes. It was
a bright but cramped room, perfect for abduction, for experimentation,
for abuse. She’d done it before, herself – laid them on a similar table;
prodded. She held nothing but hatred for them. She should have known
one night they’d be waiting. And now the humans from the Alien
Abduction Self-Help Society prepared to insert the foetus …

THE LAST LETTER

The last letter seemed so ancient, yellow,
Scrawly script from talented fellow,
The finder wondered what it said,
Such words he had never been fed,
He wrote in bytes nowadays,
The last letter from another phase,
But at least he always got a reply,
Better than the last letter, denied

HEALTH NEWS: Flu jab could be

jabophobe, good idea. Replace them all.
As for blood tests, employ vampires to sneak
up on you while asleep.

BRIT NEWS: Culture Dept faces 50% cut. Inevitable this
one would be hit hard. After all, with so much rubbish around
today, it is just falling in line with culture.

WORLD NEWS: Media tycoon Conrad Black released on

The dream and the reality – nearly the same, but not quite.

If we all thought the same way we wouldn’t need representing.

I’d like to see those thinkers glowing.

I think we’ll get the job done by ourselves long before global warming takes full effect.

  2. Hi Stan,
Thanks for that. I’ve decided if there are star travelling aliens out there, they have to pass a test. At the point where tech is approaching the possibility, they also have the tech to destroy themselves. If they pass, they’ve learnt toleration and are non-violent. If not – bang!!!
I think we’re approaching the test.

  3. You’re quicker than me, LOL! I haven’t worked on the OSI one just yet, but will have it posted later. Some more wonderful reads for the weekend here! I’m kind of a sci-fi nerd, so your Writer’s island, and flash fiction were most interesting. Great posts!

You think the administrations are bad? You should hear how some of the unwashed masses talk, it more than crosses the line into fascism. Then there is the issue they have with anyone who disagrees with them.

good point on being a star and a celeb..burqa banning?..will be interested in how they inforce a law against a religious requirement…some people may decide to become suicide bombers…the letter is lost except for maybe the one to the Gov. for clemency…loved the “jabophob..Maybe the blood sucking vampire could take a little to much from the celebs and the politicians and finally you make a great point..law and justice have never been the same…
OK..one more..is it the US Gov that wants to rule the world or the Brits??? or are we all confused in how to deal with the middle east…??

  8. I love what you did with cocoon, Anthony. Could be good, could be crazy, this life–but it will be.

  9. Hi Weasel,
Thanks for that. I like doing Sci fi now and again. A great genre.

    Hi Elizabeth,
And thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated.

    Hi Trisha,
Many thanks. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Beach Bum,
I’m thinking – or hoping – that that’s just a minority you can get in any country.

    Hi Old Grizz,
Thanks for the comments. I don’t think anyone understand the Middle East, including them.
As for Brits wanting to rule the world – been there, done that :-)

The prompt was to use titles from a CD, so how to do it with Sci Fi? Of course – Mr Holst!

In you “Last Letter” you are alerting us to the danger of having our language as we know it be altered so significantly that the old written and spoken language may be an anachronism. This has happened for millennia but it is happening so quickly now.

    Another enjoyable visit for me.

  29. Hi Jim,
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

    Hi Dee,
Many thanks. Yes, I’ve done some scary issues this week. Hopefully it will never get that far.

    Hi Old Egg,
Many thanks. Yes, the speed of change is increasing fast. In times past change could take several generations or more, so it was hardly perceived. nowadays, you can experience many changes in a lifetime.

  30. Oops a common mistake for the 15 minute famers! Mine is about the Higgs boson. What, you don’t read theoretical quantum particle physics? ( I bet you do!) As far as I understand, the problem is that if the universe was a can of baked beans then picking it up ( the can, not the universe) suggests that only one bean in the can. But when you open it,( yes, the can) it’s full, So a Higgs boson is the way of trying to explain this difference. Simple really. Oh, if you want a proper explanation one is here. But that’s why you need my metaphor machine microfiction.

Great MM. I loved your take on the picture. Not a star, but a celebrity – brilliant!

    Have a wonderful week.

  32. Hi Ellie,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  33. Ouch! Anthony, that MFM captures the trade off perfectly! We all want our children to do well in life, to enjoy their lives, and to succeed at whatever brings them joy. But celebrity is so NOT that!

  34. moondustwriter said

Came to read your monday micro fiction which was great my friend.
I agree with your view expressed in “Bolsy” if everyone is in agreement we are (our world) is in trouble. No need to fight about difference but a rousing debate over the issues and striving for improvement is better than ennui any day.
    Happy Monday from the Moon

    Hi Moondustwriter,
Thanks for that. Yes, it seems right to me.

    Hi Akelamalu,
Yes, they get everywhere. Hopefully the 55 will stay fiction :-)

  43. Hi Me A Writer?,
I’ve just found your comment in the Great WordPress Comment Eater’s cave, but I’ve rescued it. I reckon Higgy God tried to hide it :-)

  44. Now that’s an interesting insight into “stardom” isn’t it. I suppose that some would confuse the former with the latter.

  45. james said

A true democracy is a correct division of society into the “head” (leader) and the “body” (nation). The head knows what is better for the body and makes decisions based on this. Equality is when everybody gives to and receives from the society whatever he or she has to. Those who belong to the head shouldnt have any personal interest but should only consider the desires of the body. The head is merely the intentions of how to benefit the body, how to fill it. (Note how opposite it is to our leaders)

The head has to relate to the body as parents relate to their children. Parents clarify a childs needs and how to fulfill them for the childs maximum benefit. The government, too, needs to consider the nations desires and aspire to correct and fulfill them.

Exactly like we concern ourselves with giving developmentally beneficial toys to our children, the leaders need to give desirable “toys” to the nation. These toys should serve the ends of the nations development program.

There is no difference and nothing is lost in scaling of a single relationship between parents and child to governments and society. Look at damage that is done to child who has parents that fight spend all money on there own pleasures ie drink gambling drugs. This style of government i talk about would not work at moment because of state of Ego. So yes let poor child suffer while parents argue between themselves. What will happen to the child? ………….

  46. Loads of food for thought in your post today, Anthony. Loved the MM: good to have a bit of comedy! Your insight into light spoiling storytelling is one I hadn’t thought of. And I love the term “jabophobe.” Is burqa banning really unBritish? Or is it another example, as you suggest, of doing everything diametrically opposite to the French?

Have a great week. I always enjoy your contributions.

  47. Reader Wil said

Good point about politicians in Parliament not working together, because we need debating!
About the burka: I think burkas are just as bad as balaclavas. Honest people show their faces. It’s possible that burkas hide criminals carrying guns. It’s not right!

  48. GOOD GOD! Tell me that’s NOT Perez Hilton’s mother! Well… I guess somebody’s gotta be…

  49. Hi Mama Badger,
    Indeed they would.

    Hi James,
I’m not sure I agree with the analogy. Democracy is the people voting for their representatives. That’s it. How it works out is above democracy – our standards, desires, naivety.

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for that. I think the burqa affair is a bit of both. It is unBritish to ban things, but the timing of the statement … well, the French :-)

    Hi Reader Wil,
I do mention the security aspect, but other than that, I’m a strong believer that people can be what they want to be – provided the choice is to be it.

    Hi SparkleFarkle,
And some have to admit to be, as well ;-)

Nice MfM Anthony, I thought it was every Mum’s dream to have their kid make it on the Silver Screen, then they are set for life. As for Mr Black, he seems to be a Man without a Country to Call home. You are right about him though.

  51. Hi Bill,
Thanks for that. Of course, nowadays there are celebrities and celebrities – those who are excellent at something, and those who the media have made; celebrities for celebrity’s sake.

  52. hope said

Got a celebrity…no wonder she looks so sad. :) Well done!

  53. Hi Hope,
Thanks for that. An intriguing comment, by the way.

I like that distinction between a star and a celebrity! Gwyneth Paltrow is a star and Howie Mandell is a celebrity. Great microfiction.

  55. Hi Pat,
Thanks for that. Yes, there is definitely a difference between the two.

  56. Debating is absolutely necessary!! Couldn’t agree more! Insightful post as always, Anthony! Hope your week is going well!

    Sylvia

  57. Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for that. Yes, without debate we don’t have freedom.

  58. One can work together in government, but without spirited debate, it is dictatorship. That’s bad, not just theoretically, but actually. So I totally agree with your point.

  60. Hi Roger,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

    Hi Leo,
    It does indeed.

  61. I do agree with you about politicians – they do need to be able to speak their minds and debate. I’d go further and say we need to abolish the ‘whip’ system. It’s about time individual politicians were able to put the people’s desires and opinions forward, whether they ‘toe the party line’ or not!

  62. Hi Jay,
Thanks for that. I’ve gone further than the whips. My sub-domain at the top of the blog – Inde-Pol – is about attempting to subvert the entire party system by popularising the idea of Independents. The whips don’t only stop MPs from speaking their minds, the parties now offer too much of a career incentive to allow politicians to properly put the people first.

A great read, as always. I love The Last Letter. The 55 was rather chilling, but who knows? Maybe the problem is that the old fossils are very much not gone. They are alive and well and running corporations and governments. And on that note, your take on parliaments is very interesting, and seems so obvious. One wonders why more people don’t see it.

  78. Talon said

Anthony, I LOVED your microflash fiction – that was great! Even more true these days.

I hate the idea of a last letter. I have two friends that I still correspond with the old-fashioned way and I’m afraid one day I won’t have anyone to put pen on paper to. Wonderful poem.

  79. Hi Gwei Mui,
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

a good strong debate is good, it’s best when an amicable conclusion is made. i love ghost stories, they can be as scary as a debate, you never know what you’re going to find when the light is turned on. ghosts and people associated with all forms of government have a way of screwing with minds, locations, and objects we thought were unmovable. lol

  86. Hi Sepiru Chris,
I hope not. I have a question about that: if you do self-help, why do you need a book to help you?

I liked your poem “Cocoon” and agree with this perspective. Thinking about “Bolshy” I wonder about your comparison to governing and lawmaking. I also think about where this “freedom” is taking us. Speed cameras, tax to do this, tax to do that, pro labor work contracts (and apathy), crowding, lost jobs…..I think I will stop here. The question for me is what this freedom is becoming.

  122. Hi Loch Rob,
Thanks for that. Much appreciated. I can answer your question easily. Unfreedom.

If so, then what the heck is Parliment doing? The notion is good, the result is….something else.

  124. Loch Rob said

…..and no finger pointing here. The U.S. is going down the same path.

  125. Hi Loch Rob,
As I see it the party system has led to a political elite interested in their careers rather than service. This allows Big Biz to dictate, so democracy applies to the corporate world rather than the people.

Your µfiction reminded me of my NASA aerospace engineering days. During the Skylab missions I reported to ECS in the control room. From a back room console I specialized in ‘Electrical Power Systems’ and ‘Environmental Control System.’ Any mission could be either of those.

Your OSI ‘Cocoon’ poem would make good advice for members of a corporate ‘think tank.’ This is the method IBM used to create the personal computer. The ‘tank’ members were liteally quarantined away at a Florida motel.
    ..
    You wrote (‘Cocoon’ poem):
    Transformative period, makes you think,
    Focus attention, never blink,
Soon it will burst upon reality,
May be good, or possible insanity,
This is how a universe grows,
As ideas burst and the thinker glows

    ..

  145. Hi Jim,
Thanks for that. So the PC shares a lot with a new pope. I like it :-)

  146. I love the Cocoon take – there’s so much truth there. Indeed! :)

  147. Hi Tumblewords,

Enjoyed the irony in the microfiction piece. The best laid plans…enough said.

I have had many spirited discussions with my daughter about the perils of texting. There is nothing like receiving a handwritten letter from a friend!

What a wonderful word “bloshy”. Can’t wait for the right moment!
