POLLY TICKS

Microfiction: The movie got it wrong.
We needed 7 to beat the bandits.
They sent one. Magnificent! Well, if
it’s worth doing, do it yourself.

REFERENDUM

I dislike referendums. The idea of giving everyone a vote on an issue is
a form of direct democracy. France tried a variation of it once,
resulting in the Terror and Napoleon. Further, the majority always get
its way, thus removing minority rights. The best, though still imperfect,
form of democracy is representative, where we elect Parliamentarians
to decide for us. However, every ‘rule’ has exceptions, such as
constitutional changes. These should be decided by referendum, and
to deny them is undemocratic. A case in point is the referendum in the
UK in the early 70s regarding joining a European Economic Community.
We voted yes, and since then it has extended to the political, with
large slices of sovereignty transferred to Europe without referendum.
In this sense, every UK government since the late 70s has been
undemocratic.

BRIT NEWS: So Britain signs defence
treaty with France, sharing nuclear research,
aircraft carriers, support and joint task force – or
should that be farce? An obvious cost cutting exercise,
just wait until support services are so intertwined that one can
veto any action by the other.

WORLD NEWS: Waterboarding is not torture and saved Brit lives,
says Bush. He says his job was to save lives. No, more
than that. It is to uphold standards of civilisation
and decency, too. He forgot that. No
wonder, after his Presidency,
the world was bushed.

ECHOES

To feel the pains of my birth,
Every experience on planet Earth,
Experience old age whilst still young,
Remember things yet unsung;
It’s good to be trapped in my time,
Echoes of all just do not chime

FLASH 55 – KILL TIME

Fiction: They’d done it! They’d worked out how to send people back in
time. But no sooner had someone gone back than they reappeared
dead. Or rather, murdered – shot, knifed, strangled – you name it.
They suspected another organization, going back to kill them. They
never figured on a temporal ban – that time orchestrated their murder
itself.

QUANDARY

In a quandary – which route to take,
Starship captain must be a fake,
Negotiating star systems is maybe fun,
But galactic navigation is certainly no pun,
And now he’s lost, in a black hole he sinks,
His Universal Positioning System is on the blink

  1. Wow, Anthony. The time-traveler tale is grim. I’m just saying no tonight.

  2. Hi Enchanted Oak,
Ah, the things we writers will do to maintain the temporal ban.

Interesting twist on time travel– or time itself.. unwinding…I opened a fortune cookie today and it read: You will be traveling and meeting someone important… oh no – me thinks I am ‘bushed’

all good reads, there Mr Anthonynorth, you have a charming way with words.

  6. Hi MorningAJ,
Many thanks. Yes, it would wise of time to do so.

  8. Hi Brian,
Yes, I can imagine it would.

    Nice, as usual, Tony.

Time Travel isn’t such a good idea then? :0

  12. Hi G-Man,
Many thanks for the kind words.

    Hi Patti,
Thanks for that. As I see it, it isn’t the idea of representatives that is the problem, but the representatives on offer. Somehow we’ve got to break party politics and encourage Independents. It’s the self-serving party system that’s the problem.

    Hi Akelamalu,
I think you could be right.

  13. trisha said

There is no fool proof ruling system, is there? Every system has its big and small flaws.

as long as we dont work on the people, ruling systems will always find out ways to fool people i guess. :)

  14. Hi Trisha,
Churchill once advised that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all others that had so far been tried.

  16. Hi Eric,
Thanks for that, even though you’re not there to receive this … ;-)

  17. Imagine being “time”s hand. A temporal traveler appears before you and suddenly you are overwhelmed with the need to kill him. Then, as soon as the guy is dead, he disappears. Something like that could make you wonky for life.

  18. Hi Anthony!

I’m about to design and post a sidebar button for YOU, so it can be Anthony North Day in Funsterland.

I have not read this post yet, but I plan to. Your writing is always excellent.

  28. Anthony, your reply to Tilly is spot on! I enjoyed reading all your posts today. After that little lot, I’m going to become an anarchist! BTW, your best thought of all was us being bushed at the end of the Bush catastrophe years.

  29. Hi Viv,
Many thanks for the kind words. Anarchism tinged with a degree of scepticism of the modern systems in place is a good thing. It’s keep me sane :-)

I like it–The Magnificent One! Very clever microfiction. I like your take on the referendum–that, as a rule, a representative form of government is better than every individual in the country having an equal vote. People in the US forget sometimes, though, that we are a republic, where states have more power in many areas than does the federal government. Unfortunately, though, our federal government is gradually taking power away from the states’ jurisdiction bit by bit.

  57. Hi Pat,
Thanks for that. I suppose the equivalent in the UK is national govt and local govt. They’ve been centralising for years, taking power from the local. And it’s always a bad idea.

  58. Hi! I’m back. I Googled Yorkshire, and fell in love with the neat design of your flag, then found a cool gem stone of the insignia — and voila, your sidebar button made itself!

And that is one chilling 55 — I think I’ll stay right here in the present where I am! :)

Re: Referendum ~ At our recent mid-term elections in the US we were presented, along with the usual voting options for senators, representatives, state and national, with a list of 11 questions relevant to our state government. I suppose this represents a kind of referendum. Trouble is, I doubt most voters (myself included) had the detailed knowledge of what was involved to make a reasoned choice. Same applies to all referenda – one has to be really well-informed to choose wisely, and these days very few people are – for a variety of reasons.

I love time travel stories (yours is a tad depressing today, AN.) ;-0 Coinicdentally, we watched an old VCR film just last night – “Frequency” on a time travel-ish theme – very good story, based on how circumstances might change if just one thing in the past is changed by knowledge gained from the future.

  66. Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for that. Yes, all it takes is one when the time is right.

    Hi Twilight,
Yes, referendums should be simple and straight forward – and even then, the question can be loaded. As for time travel, I’ve recently got hold of Doctor Who series 1-4 on dvd. I’m in paradise :-)

    Hi Sylvia,
Many thanks. Glad you liked it.

  70. We just watched that movie again a month or so ago. The son loved it. The daughter fell asleep.

    Great reference!

  71. Great job on the MM, as usual.

I must admit I did some head-scratching when I heard about the new Entente Cordiale with our Channel cousins.

    Have a great week.

  72. Hi Kelley,

    Hi Michael,

I read your reply to Pattiken and I agree with you that Independents are the answer to the representative problem. Every party that comes to power invariably deteriorates into a self-serving one, as you say.

Scary time travel AN. I thought only travel into future is fraught with danger. :)

  78. Hi Zephyr,
Yes, this is the problem. If you want representatives to be for the people, they must be of the people, and not a party. As for time travel, us storytellers have to be scary ;-)

  79. Great post for the R Day as always, Anthony, and of course, as always, I do so agree with you!! Hope your week is going well!

    Sylvia

  80. Hi Sylvia,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

  81. Referendum – I agree, generally, but I am surprised how little information the voters gather before doing un-smart voting. :)

  82. Hi Tumblewords,
Yes, this is often the problem.

  83. Got to agree with you about minority rights. It’s like a post I did, L is for Loving. The majority opposed interracial marriage, but it changed anyway, by the courts in that case, but the principle is similar.

    ROG, ABC Wednesday team

  84. Interesting bit about referendum, how something thought to be demodratic can lead to something undemocratic.

  85. Hi Roger,
Yes, without minority rights, democracy is just bullying.

    Hi EG Wow,
Democracy is a strange thing – it is so open to abuse.

  86. Chris G. said

Oh time travel…nobody saw that one coming. Nice 55 – guess no one beats time, in any form.

As to your referendums bit, well, all I’ve got to say on the matter is, you know–there’s a reason they call it the best of the worst. We’ve got a lot of options, we just haven’t worked out a lot of good ones…

And as for Bush and his little “waterboarding” speech…yeah, I caught that one. Didn’t expect anything less, but I still facepalmed to hear it. Just saw his new book spotlighted at one of the local bookshops when I went in – turned right around and walked back out in no time flat.

  87. Belinda said

World News: Isn’t it mind-boggling how linear and disconnected his thinking is?

Quandary: This could also apply to Obama. Things looks bleak, though I remain hopeful.

This morning on the radio, our local talk show host posed the question of having two presidents — one for domestic affairs, the other for foreign relations. At first I thought it was a great a idea. But knowing how many layers there already are in the bureaucracy, it would just be another hindrance to getting things done.

  88. Hi Chris,
Thanks for that. Yes, time travel is certainly a paradox – almost as paradoxical as Bush.

    Hi Belinda,
I could see a whole load of problems with two presidents. At least they may argue so much that nothing gets done. And a world where politicians can’t get anything done may be good ;-)

I agree with your ideas about representative democracy. The world, the US and especially Texas was bushed..damn near ruined, I’d say. It’s a trip to everywhere visiting your blog. Know it’s enjoyable, often deep, always appreciated. BTW thanks for letting me know about the broken link. Thanks for going to my usual blog. Had trouble deciding what to put up for 1SW this week. Might have chosen the wrong one but you can’t have a winner every time and I know it’s flawed. Thanks, appreciate your words. Gay

  92. Hi Gay,
Many thanks for that. And I thought your poem was fine.

  95. Hi Talon,
Thanks for that. You could well be right ;-)

    Hi Amity,
    So very true.

  96. Reader Wil said

Bush should have been waterboarded himself and then afterwards tell if it was torture or not. As far as I know he hasn’t saved lives at all, but allowed thousands of innocent citizens to be killed in the endless bombardments on Bagdad. Moreover he forced his allies to join the slaughter and to run the risk of being killed themselves. How many Brits were killed? Afghanistan is the same sad story! George Bush is a hypocrite and a mass murderer! He left a terrible legacy to President Obama.
Thanks Tony for your visit and peaceful comment. That is at least a light in the darkness from a peace-loving Brit!

  97. Hi Reader Wil,
Thanks for that. Yes, Iraq was a terrible mistake. And mostly down to Bush – and the UK’s Blair.

  98. Reader Wil said

Sorry! I called you Tony. It’s Anthony of course!!
The word “Waterboarding”was not in my dictionaries. So how can I describe it best? I understand that it was also a method of the Kempetai( the Japanese office for inerrogating prisoners with torture of course).

  99. Hi Reader Wil,
Tony’s fine. Most of my friends call me that :-)
As for waterboarding, it’s been around a long while in one form or another. And always wrong.

  107. I’m with you on the fact that our government is getting successively more and more undemocratic. I voted no for the Union because even when I was that young I could see it wasn’t going to stay an economic union, whatever they said. And sadly, I was right. Even then, it would have been OK if the politicians had given us a vote on changing, just as it would have been nice if Gordon had asked us if he could sell our gold!
