A BIT OF ALIEN NEWS

Posted by anthonynorth on May 15, 2008

Welcome to my daily Diary post. I thought I’d talk first about the weather – after all, that’s what us Brits do best, or so we’re famous for. We’ve been having a beautiful week here, after a miserable, damp, cold start to spring.
Which brings me to my garden. Now, I’m not the best of gardeners, and with chronic fatigue syndrome I’m limited to how much I can do. But I’ve never seen nature go so manic as it has this week! Me thinks the Triffids are back.

And so, it seems, are the bad times.

Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, has talked about grim times ahead. The good times are over, with the economy taking a down turn that could last a couple of years.
Of course, this should have happened years ago. It was impossible to maintain present living standards. And we only did so through the insanity of non-existant credit. And the real problem is, the more such measures put back the downturn, the more harsh the downturn would eventually be.

So it’s miserable times ahead, I’m afraid.

Indeed, in the UK interest rates are on the up, and people are beginning to talk about unemployment again. And as for the housing market, that horrific term, negative equity, has come back into common usage.
In one way, though, an economic squeeze is not so bad. Good times tend to lead to decadence and thoughlessness, whereas downturns lead to more selflessness and introspection. I guess we could do with that again.

Well, enough of alien news. Oh no, there’s more!

The British Ministry of Defence has just released its UFO files, and the media has been having a mini-mental breakdown as it plays X Files music and shows people dressed in little alien costumes.
Well, okay, this slliness is inevitable. Yet, my love of mysteries has led me to research things like UFOs for years. And whilst I don’t accept ET is visiting us, the subject can teach us a hell of a lot about psychology, social interaction, perception, culture and much more.
A pity so many can’t see the opportunity for research the subject brings. Oh well, hope to see you tomorrow.

IMAGINING CHINA AND THINGS

Posted by anthonynorth on May 13, 2008

Since reinstating my Diary of a Writer only yesterday, I’ve been filled with many ideas. As usual Brian set me off, concerning the problem of blogging being driven by the reader, yet without readers, you’re shouting in a vacuum.
Getting the balance right is difficult. But to me, the actual act of writing is only part of the craft. Writing is about communication, so the end product must be in the mind of the reader. Hence, it is a two way street.

I suspect all bloggers think this.

And in that spirit, I’ll continue trying to communicate. Today I’m doing so by incorporating Blogtalkers, who ask for me to write about my imaginary life. Well that’s easy.
You’ll find my imaginary life all over this blog, ‘cos I’m a writer, and expressing my imaginary life is what I do. It is at the heart of writing, placing different characters and situations in my mind and seeing what comes out.

I’m also trying to imagine the situation in China today.

Suffering another earthquake, 10,000 are believed to have died, with another 10,000 buried. My heart goes out to the casualties.
Yet I’m sure the survivors will cope much better than those in Burma. Why do I bring this up? Because China is a regional power in the area, and wants to be accepted by the world. They can begin by putting pressure on the Burma Junta to let the full aid package in. But I’m not holding my breath.

Crime is also on my mind today.

In the UK a couple of years ago the Serious and Organised Crime Agency was set up – a kind of British version of the FBI. I thought at the time that an organization with an acronym that sounded like a popular sport would be a failure.
Well, how right I was! It seems they have just shelved their 130-strong hitlist of top villains. They’re too hard to catch. Now there’s something to write about in the ‘imaginary’ category.
Call again tomorrow.

WHERE AM I?

Posted by anthonynorth on May 12, 2008

In the last week or so Beyond the Blog reached its 700th post and raced past a quarter million hits. In just over a year, I’d say that was pretty good. Yet, I find myself asking: where am I? What is this blog about?
The answer is, it’s about me and what I want to write. Only problem is, I want to write about everything. Well, finally – I think! – it has all seemed to evolve into four super posts a week, each with between 3 to 6 poems, stories or essays.

I can’t ever see myself not writing those posts.

But in the last few months of experimentation, I think I’ve lost sight of blogging proper, even neglecting many of the other fields I was into. Well, I’m now reinstating a slightly different Diary of a Writer post, which should come out most days – I hope.
In it, you’ll find out more about me as a person, and I’m also going to incorporate my current affairs pieces here. So, what’s been happening in the world over this last weekend?

Well, the disaster in Burma is getting worse.

There are fears of over a million about to die. Yet, just over the border, the aid to stop it is in place. Now, I’m not mad about such international moves as the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague.
But it seems to me that, if they’re going to have prosecutions for Genocide, why not devise an equivalent for manslaughter? I can think of many Burmese generals who fit the bill.

On a lighter note, it was Mother’s Day in America this weekend.

In the UK, ours was earlier in the year. It’s a good day, and I often reflect on it. Of course, with me it is mainly taken up with my wife, Yvonne, and our 7 kids, mostly grown up now.
But I also spend a little time thinking about my own Mother, who died of cancer when I was twelve. Old enough to remember her, but maybe not old enough to know her, I’m certain that I owe her. She gave me so much. But let’s not neglect fathers.

Doctor Who became one this week.

Now, don’t you Tennantites get all upset. It didn’t involve sex. He’s still pure and waiting for you! And I won’t tell you what happened in case you haven’t seen it yet.
But his daughter was the delightful Georgia Moffett, the actual daughter of a previous Doctor Who, Peter Davidson. The character is excellent, and it will no doubt lead to yet another brilliant angle to take this marvelous show.

BAR AT THE END OF THE ROAD

What’s on today: A post inspired by a Three Word Wednesday prompt. Have you had a go yet? … PLUS … Click Eye On the World for my current affairs.
YOU KNOW IT’S THE WRITE WAY

BAR AT THE END OF THE ROAD

I found the bar at the end of the highway. It wasn’t that I was looking for it. I wasn’t really looking for anything. I just felt so empty, so totally drained.
I got out the car and went in – ordered a drink – drank it down – ordered another. Thought about how easily I could hit oblivion.
The bar was almost empty, too. It reflected back my life, a life ignored, a life abused, a life of boredom …

It had promised so much, had marriage.

She had been wonderful, and we were so perfectly attuned, perfectly as one, and I was so perfectly …
What? Deluded? Not seeing reality for what it was? Not registering the crap that would soon begin to fly?
It had been one hell of an argument …
The third drink went down the same way as the others. Oblivion was coming closer – and I ordered another.
‘And I’ll have one, too.’
I turned round; wondered where SHE’D come from. Unable to believe I’d missed her as I entered.
I bought her a drink. And it was inevitable we would talk – about my problems, about her life, about the meaning of everything. Until, several drinks later, she advised she had a room upstairs …
It was a heady mixture of booze and expectation as I entered her room. Hormones pumped through my body and I was ready as I took her in my arms.
Maybe it was the shock of what I was about to do, but it was then that I burst into tears – torrents of tears, pouring down my face, washing away the stresses and strains of so long, cascading away to …
To what?
To another girl’s arms, at the end of another highway? And as we both said sorry, we cried together, and kissed.

HAUNTED HOUSE

The house is empty, solitary, creepy,
to enter can affect you deeply;
As cobwebs brush your face and hair,
you’ll quickly learn to be aware;
If you had driven down the highway outside,
and through the corner of your eye you spied,
you should have ignored it, or at least have tried

But in you come, you don’t believe in ghosts,
at least that’s what you always boast;
Yet my creepy finger rubs down your spine,
as with your mind my presence will entwine;
Until you’re as timid as a mouse,
no longer denying ghosts you espouse,
especially as this is YOUR house

TO BE IGNORED

To be ignored is a terri …. (cough) … Err! Excuse me! Pay attention.
That’s better. To be ignored is a terrible thing. There’s nothing worse than speaking and no one is listening to you. And it isn’t long before you’re seething.
Of course, it could be that you are totally boring; or maybe the person has no interest in the subject at hand. Or worse of all, you are one of those people who appear to be a non-entity.
If you are, you’ve got problems. Your existence can be totally empty, and you negotiate the highway of life alone. In one sense, there’s nothing you can do about it. It is your personality. You are made like that. But it could be that you simply need to raise your confidence – be more assertive, take risks.

I used to feel like that about my writing.

For years I’d bashed away on the typewriter, totally ignored by publishers. I’d play with my style, trying to please them, but to no avail.
Eventually, of course, I’d had enough. Ignored too long, I decided to go on-line. And soon after that, I started this blog. For several months I hardly did anything with it. Then, about March last year, I discovered something.
People were beginning to comment, and I was no longer ignored. And now, just over a year later, I’ve just passed a quarter million hits.
What does this tell me – and you – about being ignored? Simple. Ignore THEM and do what YOU want to do. And pretty soon you find you’re not ignored at all.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

OF HOME AND WORLD

The wind howls, skating the top of the moor;
I watch its barren landscape,
from the protection of the green fields of my birth,
of fruitful trees,
of wheat standing tall,
of weatherbeaten ancestors, shaping the land

I played on this land in childhood,
cocooned in my small market town;
in adolescence, I began to get bored, wanting more,
those weather beaten faces like the weather beaten land,
forever unchanging, whilst I wanted change

To the city I went, vibrant and transitory,
and from there I watched so much, experienced so much,
lived!

The land of my birth was but a memory,
sometimes an irritation,
sometimes a brief moment of nostalgia,
but rarely a yearning, to relive,
but …

Experience and change become repetitive in the end,
when you’ve lived it all,
had the fun,
paid the price,
sometimes good,
often bad,
and the land of my birth became a yearning,
as the changes of age began to take me over

I’m back in the land of my birth, so many decades having past,
and it WAS changing, but slowly;
slow enough to be different, but retain that which I neglected,
thought I didn’t want,
thought I could do without,
thought I was different from

I’m back in the land of my birth, and feel whole,
having lived in different places,
having experienced different things,
having understood so much,
and together the land of my birth, and the life I have lived
combine
to make me of the land of my birth,
and the world

RATTLER’S TALE - inc Thursday Thirteen #3

Posted by anthonynorth on March 12, 2008

WELCOME TO RATTLER’S TALE - The magazine in a post
What’s on today: A post inspired by a Thursday Thirteen prompt … PLUS … Lots of links to recent posts to keep you reading. And Scribblers’ News mid-week update.
A VOYAGE OF THE IMAGINATION - The ultimate Wednesday magazine post

computer_desk.jpgINTRODUCTION

After having so much fun last week, I’m back with another THursday THirteen on my Rattler’s Tale. This week I thought I’d have a little fun with the west’s present idea of a capitalist society.
Politically, I’m a capitalist. And whilst there is a lot of good in our society, I also think things go too far. In the list below I show how it happened. Some of the things we put up with today are perhaps deeper than we think.
I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide about my sanity. Other than that, there are lots of links to show you what a busy boy I’ve been this week. If you haven’t time now, come back again and take a look. You won’t be disappointed.

Anthony North

THIRTEEN HOWS TO RULING THE WORLD

13. Start a think tank. The Mont Pelerin conference did this in 1947, economists getting together to fight collectivism. The result was the ideology behind Thatcherism and Reaganomics, the smashing of collectivism, and today’s globalisation.

12. Convince all that big mortgage and fat pension plan is good for them. That way they give most of their money to you to build huge multi-nationals. Oh, don’t mention the word, serf.

alpha-bank.jpg11. Get banks to loan loads of money that doesn’t exist. This puts everyone in debt, even though it wasn’t there in the first place to borrow. This makes them feel rich, and they don’t complain.

10. Wait for fake wealth of multi-nationals to be greater than some nation’s economies. This puts you in control of world economy AND politicians. After all, if they upset you, you can wipe out their little country’s wealth.

9. Convince everyone this is not an ideology. Note: You’ll have to replace ideology with fear, though. Turn some reactionary or other into a demon. You can lock down society in lots of security them - for the ‘people’s’ sake, of course.

8. Advertising is important. Place ads in all media outlets and pay a lot for it. This then becomes their main source of income. Then, if they ever publish anything you disagree with, threaten to pull the ads. Media is yours then.

7. Add emotion to the news. This stops people thinking straight. Instread of acting rationally and doing something about things, they just get angry for a while, shed a tear, and forget about it.

educationtwo.jpg6. Convince educators that education should be geared to preparing you for work. No need for silly things like a rounded education. Educated people might understand what you’re up to.

5. Allow liberals free reign in telling us what we should be like. Let political correctness go mad. This turns liberals into your agents, trashing everything traditional, degrading the nation state, and leaving people with no meaning. They’ll find meaning in buying things then. Great!

4. Just to nudge this process along, create lots of celebrity icons. The people will soon be buying even more to aspire to their ‘perfection’. This is a never-ending con, because as you know, perfection is unattainable.

3. Give people loads of human rights. On the one hand, this makes you look good. But on the other, the time comes when no one can do nothing without infringing someone’s human rights. This leads to a compliant society of sinners.

2. Just in case you missed anything, check your list off against Orwell’s 1984.

1. So that’s how to rule the world. We’re sold on the idea that WE rule our own world. But it’s as much a delusion as the dictators in jack-slippers above - if we said no.

A GALE IS A BLOWING

Posted by anthonynorth on January 31, 2008

What’s on today: Reflections on bad weather, and bad weather past … PLUS … My latest analysis of the American political bandwagon. Students becoming non-academic.

delta-snow.jpgA GALE IS A BLOWING

I was sat here thinking: what to write about today? Then Nature answered me. It came battering at the door, the windows, the rain lancing the panes, the wind triumphant as I took notice.
‘Write about me,’ it said – or rather, it roared as the gale blew, the forecasters threatening snow.

This morning I advised my youngest daughter to wrap up well.

This was before going out to school. She offered that knowing look. Said: ‘Am I bovvered.’
It reminded me of myself at that age; and now I remember again as I write – a morning like this (many mornings like this) delivering newspapers. Walking up the path to the door, soaked, freezing.
Walking back out, the dog chasing. The owner declaring: ‘Don’t hit my dog with your bag.’

‘Yea, right.’ I was bovvered.

Never again, I’d say, would I be out like this, on a morning like this. And many years later, the gale blowing, the snow, thick about my feet, my combats sticking to me and my trigger finger frozen as if an icicle.
So many military exercises like that I endured.
Never again, I’d say. And now I look at the gale blowing outside, and smile. No, never again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEYOND THE BLOG

Posted by anthonynorth on January 30, 2008

READ MY ULTIMATE MAGAZINE POST
What’s on today: If you haven’t guessed by the title, it’s birthday time … PLUS … Infuriating BBC and its digitalitis. UK doctors fed up - Oh, shame.
YOU KNOW IT’S THE WRITE WAY

champagne.jpgHAPPY BIRTHDAY BEYOND THE BLOG

I don’t normally post a Diary piece on a Wednesday, but as it’s Beyond the Blog’s birthday I’ve made an exception. The blog has gone through many incarnations in its first year, but now I feel I’ve got it about right.
Along with its two sister blogs, Eye on the World and North’s Review, it deals in a wide variety of subjects, and together my ‘alternative network’ has, in the last week, raced through a rather healthy 200,000 hits.

My hopes for Beyond the Blog were many.

This is reflected in its diversity. On the pages you can find my writers’ archive, whilst my newish Magazine Posts form the centre of what it’s all about.
From here I link to my current affairs comment side, and to my beloved Fiction - whilst I also get much traffic to my twice weekly Mysteries posts. It is such a variation that inspired me to call this site Beyond the Blog.

Many blogs don’t survive their first year.

Beyond the Blog has not only done that, but I feel it is still growing, and will not be disappearing any time soon. Even if life became so busy that my daily posting had to go, I’d still be posting whenever I could.
But there is no risk of a reduction any time soon. This is because I like to think of myself as a writer, and if writers do not communicate, then they fail to provide the end product that writing is.
Finally, may I give a great big thankyou to everyone who has supported Beyond the Blog. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. And please stay with me as I enter my second year.
Once again, thankyou so very much!
