A LITTLE RIGHT
Politically, I would class myself as right of centre. I believe that if we pay our taxes, obey a fair law and defend our country, the state has no right to interfere in our lives in any way. Similarly, I believe in personal enterprise, but feel that globalisation actually stunts this capacity, and is wrong.
DISENFRANCHISED
This said, any society automatically disenfranchises a small percentage of its population. Whether through illness, or simply an inability to fit into the prevalent system, a society is judged by how we treat this minority. I believe the tax payer has an obligation to help them if they ask.
CLOSET LIBERAL
I also hold some liberal ideals. I believe that a person should be free to do as he wants, provided he causes no harm to others. Yet I also believe society has an image of the norm. Exhibitionism to assault this norm is unhelpful. Your lifestyle choices should not be thrust on others.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
Words, however, are a different matter. I believe it is wrong to incite violence or libel another person. I also believe we should moderate foul language. But other than these, there should be no bar to free speech. Any concept, belief or lifestyle should be open to criticism, both minority and majority. Then the debate can begin.

The following essays are on this page:
Total Thoughts - There is a feeling that totalitarianism is beginning to rise in the west. Could this be due to a distinct psychology in our present leaders and officials?
The Noble Democrat - As the west exports itself around the world we need to take a look at democracy, capitalism and human rights, and see what happens if you take them too far.
Democracy By Numbers - In this essay it is argued that history suggests there is a numerical limit to a population for true democray to thrive. Go above this limit, and problems are around the corner.
When Good Becomes Evil - We rarely doubt Burke’s assertion about evil thriving when good men do nothing, but could it be that the fanaticism used in putting down evil can often result in a new evil? Here, a Law of Opposite Effect is put forward to explain patterns of history from Christianity causing a totalitarian Europe, to the present problems in Iraq.
Abolish Political Parties - Party politics can be seen as the central problem in the UK political system. In this essay an answer to the problem is examined, leading to a campaign to abolish the parties themselves.
Whigging It - For centuries British politics has been a battle between traditionalist and modernist. At the centre of each battle has been a down-trodden element of society, which was then ditched. Should modern minorities watch out?
Stat Life - Are statistics a credible form of analysis, or could it be that, today, they have been turned into a form of control by defining a norm that cannot exist?
Atlantis or Utopia? - Atlantis seems to belong to the realm of crack-pots, but if we trace the history of ideas of Atlantis, we find it is linked to the political psyche in surprising ways.
The Problem With Democracy - Democracy should always be applauded, but why can’t we ever get it right? Maybe because our ideas of ourselves are contrary to the democratic process.
