OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE

beta-magic-fly.jpg One area of the paranormal that has risen to prominence since the 1970s is the out-of-body experience, or OBE. This, and the related near death experience, or NDE, has regularly caused bafflement.
Do these phenomena offer evidence of wider paranormality, even survival of death? Or are they simply quirks of the mind, with nothing of a paranormal nature actually occurring?

SOME CASE STUDIES

Ernest Hemingway claimed to have had an OBE in Italy in 1918 after being hit by shrapnel from a mortar bomb. He talked of seeing his soul leave his body and float around.
Psychologist D Scott Rogo spoke of his OBE in 1965, describing how, whilst lying down, tired, he saw himself walk about the bedroom. However, it is often the case that this soul-body actually sees things itself.
Typical was the case of biologist Lyall Watson, when a bus overturned whilst on a safari in Kenya. Knocked unconscious, he found himself looking down at himself. He also saw a trapped boy. Moments later he regained consciousness and immediately dived down to rescue the boy – a boy only seen by his ‘other’ body.

IT’S BEEN AROUND A WHILE

Beliefs in the OBE are worldwide. In the Bible, St Paul seems to describe his own OBE. Also known as Astral Travel, the soul-body was known as the ‘ka’ to the ancient Egyptians.
In India it is usually known as the ‘siddhi’, whilst the Tibetans call it the ‘bardo-body’. During the 1970s Dean Sheils from Wisconsin studied tribal cultures from around the world and found beliefs in the OBE in 95% of people.
Beliefs tend to be just as strong today. For instance, a 1952 survey of 115 students at Duke University by Hornell Hart revealed that 30% thought they had had an OBE. A similar 1966 survey by Celia Green showed that 19% of students asked at Southampton University had had one.
A typical modern case was identified by cardiologist Dr Michael Rawlings. He spoke to one patient who could remember what the doctor was wearing and what he did during an emergency procedure. This was impossible because the patient was in a coma at the time.

NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE

Following studies by Dr Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and Raymond Moody in the early 1970s, the OBE came to be associated with the Near Death Experience, where, close to death, the patient leaves the body, often gaining extrasensory insight, and then goes down a tunnel before meeting a light.
Beyond the light, an afterlife is percieved and the person is judged as to whether they should die or not. A 1982 Gallup Poll claimed that eight million Americans have had such an experience, which can be life changing.
The Near Death Experience can, I think, be discounted as a real event. During the 1990s students in Berlin achieved such afterlife images during deep faint, suggesting the experience is psychological in nature. But the extrasensory information available is something else.

ASTRAL TRAVELLERS

Some people claim to be regular OBErs, or Astral Travelers. The early 20th century gave us some spectacular claims. Marcel Forhan, known as Yram, claimed to often have OBEs, claiming to have met his wife whilst traveling.
The American Sylvan Muldoon was a bedridden, sickly individual who got his only excitement from ‘traveling’, a thing he claimed to do since he was twelve. He claimed that we all do it, our dreams being remembrances of our OBEs.
Virginia businessman Robert Monroe claimed to first have an OBE in 1958. He decided to research the subject, going on to claim he had met entities whilst traveling. In 1965 he teamed up with psychologist Dr Charles Tart of the University of California.
He rigged up tests where Monroe was to ‘visit’ another room and read a five digit number whilst being monitored. He failed to do so, but often gained information of other rooms and the people around the experimental area.
In the early 1970s two other research projects were attempted. American SPR member Dr Karlis Osis monitored subjects whilst they attempted to identify objects and numbers on a platform ten feet above them. One subject, New York artist Ingo Swann, often identified objects on the platform.
Dr Robert Morris did experiments with Stuart ‘Blue’ Harary in North Carolina. Blue would ‘travel’ from one building to another, often identifying target pictures and numbers. He had a cat called Spirit. Monroe asked Blue to ‘travel’ to the cat. On occasions Spirit seemed to act as if he recognized Blue’s presence.

A WIDER AWARENESS

As with other research into paranormal abilities, sceptics easily destroy the above findings. But what seems to be lacking is theory in which to place the data. And what we seem to be dealing with in the OBE is a wider extrasensory ability.
Occultists would put the mechanisms of insight down to the Anima Mundi, or ‘soul of the world’, a connecting entity which merges thoughts and experiences into a single source available to all. However, a further theory is on offer.
In 1981 biologist Rupert Sheldrake published his ‘New Science of Life’ in which he claimed that physical and mental organisation is evolutionary and due to non-physical fields which he called morphic fields.
Such fields contain memory and are, in effect, connecting systems, working on the physical world, society and the mind through an influence he calls ‘morphic resonance.’
As an example of such an influence, he carried out tests to show that once a member of a species had done something, all members of the species are more prone to be able to do it as if the memory has risen in their minds too.
A classic example was the learnt ability of birds to peck through the top of milk bottles – a new ability which seemed to occur too quickly to have been learnt in the accepted way.
Such an idea allows for a wider extrasensory ability, with the Astral Traveler somehow accessing this universal ‘memory’ of all things, including contemporary events.

VARIOUS THEORIES

New York psychologist Lawrence LeShan worked with many psychics, including Eileen Garrett, and became convinced that we live in two realities. ‘Sensory’ reality was the world we seem to inhabit. But he also identified a ‘Clairvoyant’ reality we can access. Is this the reality we descend into for the OBE?
Sceptical psychologist Dr Susan Blackmore would say no. To her the OBE is a simple mind creation – a world of thought and imagination born of the desire to be free of the limitations of bodily existence. But could it be that in offering a sceptical answer to the OBE, we could have a real hint as to what this clairvoyant reality is?

CRYPTOMNESIA

Cryptomnesia, the ability to bring to consciousness information we didn’t know we had retained, could hold the route towards understanding.
Some studies have suggested that for every seven units of information we sense in the world, ten thousand units slip straight into the unconscious, making our senses a very inferior recorder of the world about us. Imagine the mind as an iceberg, with our conscious the tiny tip on the surface, the vast bulk of our perceptions and memories lying underneath.
With such a mind model, we must ask: how much information do we have stored in memory, and continually topped up every second by our perceptions? Could we have, within us, an immense store of unknown information?
If so, picture that inner mind as a form of ‘cryptomnesic’ inner map, a mind model of the world about us; perhaps, even, a mind construct of the world about us.
I would argue that this cryptomnesic inner map could well be a total reflection of the outside reality; and I would further argue that this map is the world we descend to in the OBE; a world which contains almost as much information as the world outside.
Of course, we could go even deeper than this – into ideas held in quantum theory of the part and the whole being one and the same; at the information level, at least. Would such a concept allow for our journeying in the inner mind to also be a route into reality through the back door?
At our present level of knowledge it is perhaps a step too far. The ‘inner map’ can maybe explain OBEs sufficiently. But if it were a possibility?
Now that would be Magic.

I think OBEs are a distinct possibility. Haven’t you ever had that experience in the middle of the night where you fall back down onto the bed as if from a great height? It happens to me frequently, although I have no recollection of actually ‘travelling’ anywhere. It OBEs really do happen it would be magical, indeed!

Oh, this was very thought provoking, Anthony…You’re into Cow Tipping, too, I see! LOL

Astral Travel is one of those things (and there haven’t been many) that I’ve had no interest in pursuing in the least. Over the years I’ve read alot written by those who do….at one time, had a very close friend who did, regularly….and I just couldn’t find any “good” reason to try it.

I have my hand full in THIS reality – why go mucking up the works and start travelling to another? From what I hear, it’s as full of crap as this one is~ LOL 😉

There does seem to be something to the OBE thing, when people die and can then, later, relay so much of what was going on in the room at the time they ‘died’. To me, this just proves that the Real us is indestructible…and much larger than what is contained within these mortal coils.

    🙂

    Happy New Year! (almost!)

    Hi Selma,
I remember a friend who claimed he often had the feeling of leaving his body and going walkies in his dreams, but he dismissed it as JUST a dream. I advised him to get his wife to write a simple message and place it on top of the wardrobe. Next time he had this experience, try to read it.
He adamantly refused to discuss the subject again.

    Hi Grace,

‘From what I hear, it’s as full of crap as this one is’

Does that suggest my above idea of a reflection in the mind could be right? 🙂 After all, if it was the ‘crap’ would reflect back, too.
A fascinating subject, but I’ve never felt the need to experience it either. I’m happy to read the experiences of others. I wrote a short story about such things a while ago. It’s maybe enough to put anyone off.

I discovered OBE is real on accident, after years of using deep meditation for anxiety and insomnia.
I never believed in “astral projection”, ever. I thought people who talked about it were lying to sound cool.
It is not the equivalent of “life after death”, it is shedding your heavy wakened self -through sleep, meditation, or perhaps death (I’m not dead so I’m not sure)- and joining into a universal wisdom/consciousness or something like it, I know that sounds so cheesy. There’s not an easy way to explain a sense or vision of something that is NOT physical.
It changes a person and their view of everything after it happens to them. There is an intense euphoria that melts through you during OBE, I believe that so many people are drug addicted because they don’t know they are able to feel the same way drug free -I experimented with heroin a few times when I was much, much younger and the sensation is quite similar.
When people relate their experience with OBE’s, I either nod my head and feel warm inside or think “that personal is full of sh*t.” That’s the part that is certain and concrete.
I never talk about my experience with OBE with people, they don’t understand and think it’s crazy talk. I don’t blame them, I used to have the same opinion.
And yes, it is possible for any person to achieve, but it’s hard for anyone to believe or try in a culture such as ours that scoffs at the metaphysical part of life beyond visions of the virgin mary.

    Good morning Tara,
You raise some important points in your comment. The life change involved in the OBE can be similar to the mystical experience. I suppose, in one way, it can have relevance as an evolutionary experience. Indeed, I offer, below, a similar idea on a planetary level. You might find it interesting:

    CLIMATE CHANGE AND PHENOMENA

Your point about drugs offering a similar experience is also valid. I’ve looked into this problem and come to certain conclusions here:

    BOOZE OF THE GODS

    Many thanks for your comment.

  6. I have OBEs constantly. My 16-year-old daughter has them as well and has had for many years. The list below (between each comma) is a different OBE. All have a very long description, which I’ve put to paper. My OBEs consist of both humans and aliens. I was never into aliens when these things happened but became interested as to why this was all happening to me in latter years. They have since intensified. Many times an OBE will be an answer to a question I pose to myself. Again, these are just slight excerpts of each OBE and certainly not all of the ones I’ve had.

In a chapel atmosphere with 4 men a girl and three aliens, alien watching woman killing a man with a knife, pizza man raped woman, the museum mansion where earth’s history is stored, in a furnace area under the house, a may pole watching children, man threw me a deck of cards or was it a pack of cigarettes, the kitchen and the alien women talking, the dining area at a large convention size room and the waiter who pulled the table cloth off of the table, the tea party house, daughter’s castle and slide, (she had the same OBE on the same night that I did), the candy store and the surprise sitting outside the door next to the big lady, saw an alien for a brief moment near the candy present that I wanted, the escalator w/alien in what looked like a mall, the spaceship made to look like movie sets everywhere in a room bigger than a large 747 hanger, the pitch black room where aliens were working but there are no lights because they don’t need light to see, the aliens (many) all doing the same job sitting at small desks watching humans on a computer looking screen, naked human looking male holding a baby up by it’s feet, priests dieing of heart attacks and falling to the floor in a church, a movie set where three aliens were sitting on a fence like at a rodeo with cowboy garb on, the big bubbles I made in the air, the synthetic grass, the cave where that guy slashed the girls eyes out on the floor, alien (female) got out of vehicle with skirt stuck in underwear – dancing – felt embarrassment for her, flying about 200 feet above a different planet in an aircraft or spacecraft of some kind, pretenders on ground dressed in monster costumes being shot at by others above in aircraft or spacecraft, standing on ground watching weather balloon looking objects (like parachutes) coming to ground, men with masks step off and say, “well the government said it was a weather balloon so we didn’t want to make them out to be liars”, aliens standing on fire trucks with hoses in their hands but fire is coming out of the hoses, not water.

That last one simply means fighting fire with fire, which is example for all of my OBEs since they all seem to have a meaning that is meant to figure out and not to be taken at face value. That is except for the woman stabbing and killing the man. I felt a tremendous level of disgust, which seemed to be portrayed by the alien viewing the act. Usually always, I feel not only my feelings, but also the feelings of another when I have these. All very odd and all OBEs, not simply lucid dreaming, which I have on almost any given day as well.

I don’t even know anymore what a normal dream is.
    Eileen

Wow, you are extremely intuitive. I was particularly moved by the piece on climate change as I was so able to relate it to my own existence- the way I feel before a storm is positively dizzying. There are a quite a few stories about the metaphysical changes in people and mother earth since about 1970, I’m not into the majority of “new-age” type things, but one thing I read did sit very close to home. So called Indigo folks, they say the very first came around 1970. It seems a little mumbo jumbo to me, but still- I possess every feature, such as the electrical problems I have in every house I live in and car I own just to start, others I’m not comfortable writing about right now ~ and I was born in 1970. I believe this has much to do with what you wrote about the changes in people.
I also wanted to add a point I failed to make before.
The peoples we consider primitive, such as australian aborigines, think having what we call OBE’s are a natural part of life. I wholly agree ~ being a mystic and having mystical experiences is NOT supernatural. It’s as natural as bees turning pollen into honey.
If people who were frightened by their experiences realized that (and their nay-sayers), are world would be so much more harmonious and there would be no categories called “The Unexplained”. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all explained.

    Hi Aliencontactee,
Some of those are slightly disturbing. That said, there are a lot of elements of classic abduction scenarios – albeit, represented violently.
For instance, the alien examination has often been described as rape, etc.

    Hi Tara,
I’m glad my essay connected with you. It makes it all worthwhile. Yes, quite often I think the most unexplained thing in the world is the closed mind.

Happy New Year to you all!

  9. I don’t wonder if I was abducted Anthony, I’m quite aware of the fact that I was. My last abduction was October 1988. I was never into the alien thing either, they never even crossed my mind. It’s not so much like a rape as it is a violation. In my case there was definitely a control factor, which instilled a feeling of being violated but not that of rape. Not in my case anyway however I’ve heard stories such as you mentioned.

  10. anthonynorth said

    Hi Aliencontactee,
Are you aware you keep being spammed? This is the second post I’ve had to rescue in a row. A kind of WordPress Abduction 🙂
The idea that aliens hadn’t crossed your mind before your ‘events’ is, I think irrelevant. Unconsciously you could well have been affected by the UFO enculturation of the time.
Culture is a powerful thing, whether we like it or not.

  11. Yeah, you’ve mentioned that before about the WordPress Abduction thing.
Anyway, I’m aware of such things. I’m the one who’s always telling everyone else about it and explaining why they should not entrench themselves in such or they’ll start believing it. lol Remember? Even a hypnotherapist will have little to do with someone who has been abducted if they’ve involved themselves in such or on the Internet surfing on aliens and UFOs. That’s understandable since fiction can become reality under hypnotism.

However, I only believe what I know and even then only based on up front and personal experiences I’ve had and not even queries I have with myself in my own mind. The mind is a funny duck and yes, those things happen to people. In my case though, the time frame of 1980 through 1995 I was extremely busy in my business’ and had no time for television, let alone movies. I had two businesses and 28 employees to give you an idea of how much free time I never had in order to delve into such. I went to work from bed and to bed from work. Except on the weekends, which was my downfall and also my profession since I had off-road motorcycle accessory stores and so on the weekends I raced desert and motocross. So I never had time for such but I can tell you that I saw the cute movie ET. My life was so far from the alien /UFO scene, I can’t put enough emphasis on it.

The reason the weekends were my downfall was because the abductions took place while camping in the desert on Friday or Saturday night prior to the race. That’s approximately 50 weekends a year from 1972 to 1995. I’m not the only one that got it out there either. As crazy as it appears, which is certainly understandable, such things did happen and has happened to more than a few.

    Hi Guys,

I would describe one of the most strange case of NDE that I saw sometimes ago on a Discovery Channel program on NDE. In this program they showed the interview with this guy who had automatically come back from being dead and lying in the morgue for some time. Everybody around was stunned and on being inquired further he said that while he was dead he could see everything which doctor attending to him verified as true. However the most stunning part when he told that in his ‘soul state’, he visited another hospital where wife of his friend was supposed to deliver the baby. When he reached there he found that baby had already been delivered sometime ago but it was continuously crying and doctors despite their best efforts were not able to diagnose the reason for baby’ discomfort. So this guy, still in ‘soul state’ communicated with the baby and baby told him that his hip bone is broken and it was hurting. After coming back to life, this guy went to the hospital and he found that indeed the baby was in discomfort and doctors didn’t have a clue. So he asked the doctors to examine baby’s hip bone and indeed it was broken! This whole incidence was verified by all the medical personnel involved.

Now I don’t know what theory can explain this.

  13. anthonynorth said

    Hi Aliencontactee,
I don’t doubt for a moment that such things happen. My interest is in just what it IS that happens. As for enculturation, I’d say it is impossible, since the late 1940s, not to know about aliens and UFOs in the west, whether you have an interest or not.

    Hi Vimal,
    Thanks for that.
Apart from the baby’s hip bone, this is a pretty average case. There are hundreds of similar accounts on record. Fascinating, aren’t they?

  14. vimal said

    Hi Anthony,

Yup you are right these cases are indeed fascinating, sometimes I really feel so desperate to know the truth, but alas, we are so far away from knowing it.

  15. giatholabi said

    Hi Anthony,
It is clear that NDE related to a specific process done in the brain as neurobiological events(1) ,which is combined with Self cultural content.
    We can see that clear with this tale:{ a boy has suffered a cardiac arrest from renal failure at 8 months of age(2). After his resuscitation, he slowly recovered cortical and neurologic functions over the next 4 to 6 months. At age 33 months, he was playing in the living room when his mother asked him about biting into the cord. He stated: “I went into a room with a very nice man and sat with him. (The room) had a big bright light in the ceiling. The man asked if I wanted to stay or come back with you.” He then looked up at his mother and stated: “I wanted to be back with you and come home.” He then smiled and went back to playing with his toys. }
We can see that this boy hasn’t seen any thing related to heavens and Jesus .. etc.

And for people who are in NDE and have some experiences about there surrounding during NDE could be explained by telepathy.
But what is strange and couldn’t be explained completely are some phenomena related to death like predeath visions (especially sudden death):

{Osis and Harroldson(3) surveyed 5000 physicians and nurses in the United States and 704 in India and collective 471 cases of predeath visions. They were typically brief, within 24 hours of death; dead and living relatives were often seen, and the purpose of the experience was to take the dying person away and to provide comfort. There was no potential effect from medication in 80% of the cases. For example, a 4-year-old Hindu boy dying of leukemia stated immediately before death: “don’t you see my mother (previously deceased), she is calling, she has her arms open for me.”

    A retrospective case control study of premonitions of SIDS by the Southwest SIDS Research Group documented that 21% of parents had a premonition of their infant’s subsequent death. Seven parents document their premonitions in a journal before the death. }

The question is who much can we explain without needing to spiritual dimension?

I would like to make a couple of notes here. First is the merkaba, if you’ve herd of it or know what it is then you already know what im getting at. If you don’t then i realy very strongly you do a google search on it and it’s ancient history and you will see how it extremely relates to the above topic. DO IT!

Now the subject i realy want to cover is a chemical know as Dymethaltriptomin or “DMT” for short and is also refered to as the “Spirit Molecule”, It is commonly extracted from plants or tree bark and has the power to cause the most vivid hallucinations of any known substance far beyond LSD, from my reseach i have found that during this trip most people experience very similar things and the major one being interaction or communication with some sort of intelligent being and this usualy occurs in a place that otherwise does not exist or it is definately not the room you wre just in before the DMT kicked in, it is also very very real. Anyways here’s the catch! DMT is also produced by our brians! I have even herd that when a human dies a very small sack containing DMT bursts releasing a relatively huge amount of the stuff. I don’t think DMT is just a hallucinagen I think it serves some purpose and im not even talking about what timothy leary thought about LSD. we have to consider the fact that reality is what you make of it. when a tree falls it does NOT make a sound it only causes vibration, it is absolutely silent! sound does not exist OUTSIDE of the brain. my brain interprets this much the same as a computer interprets binary and converts it into a conscious experience. quantum mechanics is showing more and more evidence that matter is really just frequency waves and not physical at all. If you rotate a ball on a string around in a circle realy realy fast it looks like a consistant circle which has no gaps and you can make physical contact with it at any point which gives us the illusion of a solid. The same phenomenon occurs when somthing vibrates. just like sub-atomic particles!! It is very difficult to be aware that you exist behind your eyes but that’s how it is. your eyes are like antennas on a tv, they pick up the frequency your brain is pretuned to resonate with and convert the waves into images or an experience. people don’t realize that we are essential watching a tv screen. The idea that you are seeing somthing is realy a very abstract and thuroughly overlooked concept. every thing that you are “seeing” is in your head! to see somthing is to basicaly process data and that is it. a bat probably sees exactly what we see minus the visable color/light spectrum, but it probably produces images just like we see them it is just a different way of gathering the data. the visual aspect is fabricated inside the brain using the given information recieved by the eyes. you have to remember your eyes don’t really see they just detect. your brain is what sees. now, why would the brain produce such a chemical as DMT? could this chemical be a catalyst for consciousness? maybe it is the liquid crystals in your monitor. I realy think there is somthing significant in these out of body experiences and i think understanding them could be vital to understanding what existence realy is. maybe if your not lazy and you read through all of that and understand what i am saying then you might start to realize that existance in a particulr place may not be so physical after all.

Out of body experience (obe) can be done by anyone. Its a very simple technique
but yet differcult. I know of one that does work, if interested e-mail me, I might or might not teach you it.

I don’t know what this guy is talk about spirit molecule, DMT and LSD. Nothing changes you are in the here and now.

But remember this, your presence there will not go unnoticed.

    Hello Anthony,

Thanks for publishing your exciting work here.

I myself have experienced NDE and OBE. The NDE was much as described in your article: there was the vortex tunnel with the light at the top and my body below. At first there was confusion and then realisation that I was going through “transition” again. “Transition” was the word that came to mind, which I thought odd at the time. I was only 16 then. I had the feeling that once I reached the light, this life would be over. What was really amazing is that in the vortex I had complete enlightenment; I could remember past lives and I knew why I existed on Earth. There was even a reason to exist, almost like we all have small missions here. Happily, I came back to live a little longer, but alas, with the gift of life comes ignorance of existence. A bit like Schrodinger’s Cat. I find that most infuriating!

The OBEs are curious. I have found that one can induce OBEs in various ways, but the most striking way to do it is to disrupt the sleep cycle. I find that if I force myself to wake up 4 hours before the usual waking time, stay awake for 30 minutes to 60 minutes and then go back to sleep, this will often induce an OBE. The OBE seems to occur when the brain wave pattern is in theta state. It is a narrow band of brainwave activity between being awake and being asleep and one usually drops straight through it when falling asleep. In an OBE, waking up and walking around only to discover the most bizarre things start happening around you can be quite disturbing if you are not expecting it. The reality appears exactly the same as physical reality and it is only when very unlikely things start to happen does one begin to realise that one is actually having an OBE. At least that is how I experience it. But the most curious thing is that through experiment I have discovered that the OBE reality is NOT the same as the physical reality and one does not in fact “see” what is happening on the physical reality. Everything happens “in the head”, so to speak. Yet, the OBE reality appears exactly as real as the reality one normally wakes up to. That is, until bizarre things start happening.

There is some interface with the physical reality. In consciousness there is a region which in the East they call the Akashic Records. In this region one can see images of past and future physical reality. Like your article describes, I also “saw” my wife two years before bumping into her in the physical realm. I have a theory about the possibility of communicating with others in the OBE world which would explain how the man in your article could “see” the trapped boy, but not knowing anyone else who gets a kick out of exploring consciousness, I haven’t been able to test it yet.

With practice one can explore consciousness at will through meditation alone. But the Good Lord in His wisdom has given nature abundant ethnogens, which can open the mind sufficiently to “see” these other worlds with relative ease and little effort. Graham Hancock wrote a fairly interesting book (if you can get through the first few incredibly boring chapters) titled “Supernatural”. In it, he argued that shamans have been exploring consciousness with the aid of ethnogens since homo sapien sapiens began wandering the planet.

He goes so far as to suggest that it is in higher consciousness and through the use of ethnogens that mankind has derived all real knowledge.

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for those experiences. Much appreciated. And I’m pleased you like my work. The akashic Records are interesting – I’ll be writing about them eventually.

    Hi Noboru,
I’ll decline to email you, if that’s alright.

    Hi HomoLuminous,
I’m not sure I’m with you on this, but thanks for the comment regardless.

after reading my post i see it’s a bit vague and this is because i tried to keep it as short as possible, basicaly what i am saying is that the “OBE’s” and especialy “NDE’s may have a biological explanation which could explain what they are and that they are real. on tv you see all of these new age technologies and discoveries in studying the human brain and psychology but the modern science that you don’t hear about on the news is quantum mechanics which has recently thrown a shaft into the gears of the scientific method by PROVING that reality it’s self as well as perception are variables which are relative to humans and don’t apply to understanding the way things are out side of our limited human experiences even when trying to explain the functions of the human brain or trying to explain things like out of body experiences. so far caunscious existence has only been explained with speculative theories and using metophores to apply some sort of reference. these out of body experiences could be as physical and real as the “in body” experience we are all having right now. With my reference to DMT I was trying to insinuate that maybe the brain produces it and releases it before death as a natural reaction, or in other words maybe DMT is responsible for the mind having OBE’s and especially NDE’s. maybe DMT fuels the mind’s aparent ability to travel outside of the body and this is a natural experience which can actualy be observed physicaly. I have also applied a much more in depth and comlicated version of my theory to my own small study on merkaba meditation and it seems fit exactly the same as OBE’s and NDE’s. If you are still clueless as to what DMT and the merkaba are you can go to http://www.DivineMomentsofTruth.com and just GOOGLE: MERKABA or merkaba meditation just make sure you try and sift thrue the crazy hippy spiritual stuff you will find, which clouds the true history and reality of the merkaba and it’s explanations of function. it’s really very interesting.

    cheers!

    Hi HomoLuminous,
I’ve done a quick search of Merkaba and I’ve found nothing more than you can find in many meditative techniques. Maybe I’ll find more researching it deeper.
Quantum theory features a great deal in my research of the paranormal. If you check my Mysteries page at the top of this site, and Paranormal UFO Occult sub-domain on my Blogroll, you will find many mentions.

  25. HomoLuminous said

As far as the merkaba, i think it is the most unique (of the methods i know of) because it is also mentioned in religious books and is even linked to what the hindu’s refered to as “Prana Breathing” “prana” meaning life or life energy. some of the accounts of individuals who have years of experience with practice of the merkaba/ prana breathing technique claim to have the effortless ability to travel using their merkaba which is the point, it is not the point to cleanse one’s soul or mind although that does effect the effectiveness. the merkaba i believe is basicaly defined as a machine made up of 2 counter rotating fields of light with a disc 30 feet in diameter on a horizontal axis steming from the base of the spine. the hebrew word merkabah means chariot. the idea is that we used to breath not just oxygen through our nose and mouths but we used to take in prana or light/life energy through the tops of our heads and it would travel down some sort of tube in our spine (possably the spinal chord?) and the energy could be used to activate our merkaba which was a natural thing and we could use it to connect to other places via some other physical dimmension. I think that If the Merkaba is real then its utilizing the exact same thing that happens with OBE’s and NDE’s, or what are the odds that we are capable of multiple means of interdimmensional travel? …not good. if it’s possable then it’s probably done only one way. I’ve even herd that (i think it was pineal gland) actual has all the parts of an eye ball and the capability to focus light, now, i don’t know that for a fact and i even asked my physician over the phone once and he said he had never herd that but i do know that for a fact alagators do have this thing in there heads. what it’s for is beyond me. anyways with these ideas put together (merkaba,OBE’s,NDE’s) we are missing somthing and i think that somthing is a catalyst of sorts. all brains need chemicals to make it’s signals effective and i think when it comes to these things that DMT is that catalyst!

  26. anthonynorth said

    Hi HomoLuminous,
Obviously, anyone can decide any one mystical/religious system is the right one for them, and I would never dream of dissuading them.
As for me, I tend to study various mystical forms, whilst remaining essentially unattached from them all.

  27. HomoLuminous said

i think you’ve gotten me all wrong. i do not practice the merkaba nor have i ever tried DMT. If you are tyrying to understand NDE’s and OBE’s then i think it’s important to try and understand other “mystical” forms that may be related thus providing different perspectives and information on what you are trying to study. If you read my above text you will hopefully see that i am trying to propose the rather plausible idea that the things i have mentioned and the subject of this thread are likely all tips of the same iceberg. whether you have an out of body experience like the man in the bus crash or go to a heaven of sorts after dying and being givin the option to continue with your life or if you are travling around in your merkaba they are all likely the exact same thing just experienced differently so when that is considered, somthing like DMT which is known to aparently cause these same experiences on a very extreme level and is produced by the brain with no other aparent purpose, seems to add a possibly scientific and observable aspect to the big picture, should there be one. maybe DMT is mystical and is scientific evidence of our ability to be consciously aware and even exist in places we are not physicaly at, or maybe it just causes hallucinations. anyways i’ve typed the first two sections of a book on this thread so i must retire.

  28. anthonynorth said

    Hi HomoLuminous,
If I’ve got you wrong, I apologise. From my experience, when someone appears to be pushing a particular system, they have a vested interest. However, I was clearly wrong in this case.
Essentially, I agree with your last comment. Yes, a variety of mystical systems should be studied in an understanding of OBEs, which is the approach I take, whilst, as I say, remaining unattached from them all.

I had an OBE and it was something that just happened by itself, and had been trying to happen for some time before I actually went. When I tell people about it I get the usual comments, like “you must have been high”, or “you need to get some meds”. I don’t mind though, being a former skeptic myself. I know what I experienced. I was awake from start to finish and I wasn’t intoxicated on anything. The experience confirmed for me that all that so called “imaginary” stuff I experienced as a child was, in fact, very real. I also lost all fear of death, not that I’m in a hurry to die, but I know now, not just believe, that I can exist outside of my human body.

a couple of years ago, one of my good friends sent me a link about astral projection. i always found things like this very interesting so i read article after article on the subject, and also many a message board scattered with peoples experiences across various websites that night. i came across some breathing techniques and other tricks that were said to have helped people obtain the OBE. both my friend and i tried the various techniques every night, mostly with zero results until one night when my friend claimed to experience the vibrations accompanied by a loud shrieking noise. i was very jealous at the time and within a week finally experienced the vibrations myself, but thats about as far as i ever got until this week. i went to sleep like any other night, and slept a good 4-5 hours before wakign up and glancing at the clock, then immediately began to return to a state of sleep. this time though my mind stayed awake. my body was completely at rest and began to vibrate. the vibrations were like nothing ive ever felt before, they were extremely intense this time. usually by this point i would wake up, but this time in my head i was talking tomyself and i said to myself, this is amazing, its so intense, and it felt good, i wanted it to continue. it was around this time that i felt like my arms were raised with the underside of my wrists pointed upward toward the ceiling, and i began to hear voices in my left ear only. the voices sounded as if two people were talking to one another and i was listening in on the conversation via a radio transmission. they were slightly distorted by static-like noise. they were talking about me, and they were saying things like “what do you think we should do?” the other voice replied “do you think he is ready?” as they were talking i began to feel myself feeling weightless and i began feeling like i was floating. at some point i felt as if my body had then floated away from my bed and i was placed on the floor and i remember the distinct feeling of the burber carpet on my arms and hands. i never did look over to my bed to see if i could see my physical body because at about this time is when i fully realized what i was experiencing and i remembered what i had read about astral projection. i became excited and thought of a place that i wanted to go to. immediately after thinking of the place, i was no longer in my room, however ive never been to the place that i popped up in. i think by this point i had slipped into a dream. later that morning i experienced the vibrations again, this time accompanied by a bright flash of light and a feeling of my face hitting the burber rug. after some research tonight im starting to think that maybe instead of floating out of the body, perhaps i “rolled out,” causing me to hit the floor. an author of one of the articles that i read tonight stated that he foudn that rolling out was easier for him.

i had what i believe to be my first obe yesterday hence, the trawling of the internet to gain more insight to it all. i usually get full on sleep paraylisis if im over tired and that is how it started. i was lying on the sofa it was a sunny after noon ,just about to dose off when sleep paralysis started and then i had a jump start and was about to try and open my eyes to stop the paralysis like i usually do but suddenly said to my self ” no its ok im ok…lets try this ” as soon as i said that the fear of the paralysis left me except for the humming in my ears which only hummed when i tryed to will myself to rise up out of my body which i felt happening. i was wide awake and could see the daylight through my eyelids but was scared to open my eyes incase of what i might see. i felt i could only go so far up above my body,at least i felt i had. then slowly let my self lower back down. It seemed easier to go back in than come out,it felt more gentler, no poping or snapping feeling. I heard people feel wonderful doing this but to me it felt more like i was about to skydive for the first time, exciting yes but still a bit scary. As i didnt open my eyes i cant be sure of what really happened but it certainly is something that has never happened to me before,im now 31. But if it happens again i will certainly try to be braver and open my eyes.

  35. Hi Emma,
Thanks for sharing that. You do right to read up about such experiences. Read about it from all angles, and then make up your own mind as to what may be going on.

  36. I had recently had an obe experience and a chance to go into the light that was a brilliant white light ,It was as if it was the plain of being asleep and awake at the same time then I rose out of my body part of me was laying there but I was walking around the room sort of like another plain , I felt no pain anymore ,maybe I died when I was asleep and it wasn’t my time yet to go then all the sudden I was back in my body and out of my body I couldn’t move I was aware of this and I spoke to my wife she was lying next to me. I called her name and said wake me up. wake me up.and she did she pushed me back and forth and I woken out of that plain.I believe that I can travel around if I could concentrate I hope it happens again. So I can experiment to let go of the fear of paralysis and walk out of the room maybe try to go outside my room into the living room.
I prayed to god thanking him for the experience, next time I might try to go into the light to see what happens then.I’m still freaked out about it
and need to talk about it to everyone who had the same thing happen to them.until next time i keep you posted on any further experiences.

I’m intrested on getting feed back on and experiance i’m starting to believe was an OBE.. This was a while back before summer wen i took my first two hits of acid.. everyone went to bed and i was walking around the apartment getting crazier and crazier with no human interaction.. so for some reason i kind of just layed on the floor and i was just in like…. i don’t know it’s like when you pass yourself out and you wake up and you start to wake up and everything is crazy nd you don’t know where you are or how you got there…. i was seeing a body.. it had my friend cody’s body just because i’d been looking at the guy all night but it kind of had my face i just knew it was me.. that’s all i can say and i was in the living room and i had this really loud whooshing sound and i wouldn’t say it was in my ears but it was there… i just felt like i was watching a tv but no feeling or anything i felt whole at the same time… the whole experiance really blew my mind… the room itself and everything else in it where just shades of grey.. no color at all even the body which i feel like was me was grey.. he then sat down on the couch and picked up this silver cup and the word “thing” was some how popped up he didn’t say it but it’s just like a thought then he sat the cup down and pointed at himself and said “thing”.. and i was tripping acid so everything was moving in this back and forth motion like a sheet blowing in the wind on a clothes line. And then i got back up it felt like was just laying there for a second, like litterally a second, and then i realized what had happened.. it was the most disturbing experiance i’ve ever had and my whole concept on reality and being was changed and still is. Everything in my life has no point to it and the only thing i enjoy is writing music. That’s it. Everything else is pointless. I could never fully explain all this to my friends and i don’t think i ever will i just wanted to know if my assumption is correct.

    thanks

  39. Hi Dillon,
Many people think hallucinogens are a way to produce the mystical experience, which is closely associated with the OBE. And there are certainly similarities between the drug induced experience and that produced by meditative discipline, but there is a major difference.
Such experiences, if induced by discipline, etc, provide value to life in general. Drug induced experiences are just that, and do not have value in terms of life. In effect, a pointless experience, without the life-changing aspects that can arise from the disciplined approach.
There is a caveat to this, it seems. A combination of disciplined meditation and mild narcotics DO seem to work together, with full advantages. But the discipline is still vital.

I just got on this sight today to try to figure out what I went through the other day. I was rocking my child to sleep and I too fell asleep. Next thing I know my kid was standing at the gate saying mama as he does often and I was trying to get up off the couch to go pick him up and I could not get up! I was trying to get up with all my will and power but I could not get up and I could see myself trying to get up! It’s like I was standing over myself looking at me trying to get up and I was freaking out! It was so so so so real! Then I woke up, baby still in my arms but my neck was sore like it had been strained from me trying so hard to get up! Can anybody help me out with this? Is this an out of body experience?

  46. Hi Kendra,
If this is a one-off, I don’t think you need to worry at all. Was it an out of body experience? Whatever such a thing is, it could be classed as such, but no more unusual than what has happened to hundreds of thousands of other people.
If you want a more rational answer, there is a known phenomenon called ‘sleep paralysis’, which is a half-awake state where you can appear to be conscious, but messages do not reach your body, and you literally cannot move. The mind reacts to this and produces a mind-scenario to go with the paralysis.
Please don’t worry about any of this. As I say, such things happen to most people some time in their lives. I hope I’ve put your mind at rest. If not, you need to talk it out with someone – a doctor, a close friend.

I called on god and I popped up from it…this happened to me when i was like 16 now…than i turned 17 and the same thing happend i couldnt move my body or open my eyes…but this time i heard a loud buzz in my head like one of those machines you here when someone dies….i called on god…but this time…i had to call on him like 8 times and than i popped out of it…i feel like i was getting weaker, but whatever it is i wont give in to it…..now that im 18 another experince happened..i couldnt move and i was having a strange dream….am i going crazy or something…

  52. There has been no convincing evidence of veridical out of body experience. While perceptions experienced during OBE seem stable and coherent, they are rarely consistent with one’s physical reality. There are many cases where the experiences go far beyond anything that can be observed in the physical world. To the exent that nothing actually leaves the body, an OBE is not necessarily a paranormal phenomenon or one that necessarily carries much religious significance. This, however, should not necessarily diminish one’s fascination with and pursuit of the experience.

I have always been interested in spiritual matters. Opened minded but a little sceptic until I had an occurrence one summer’s day in 2008.
A friend and myself had a discussion on OBE a few days before my experience. I commented that when meditating I sometime felt the sensation of drifting out of my body, but always panicked and stopped it from going any further.
He just laughed and suggested that I go with the sensation next time it occurred.
A few days later I lay meditating in my holiday static caravan, practising deep breathing. It was lovely a sunny day with just a light cool breeze blowing through the open window to my right.
As a lay there I felt the sensation of rocking from side to side, quite a pleasant feeling, as if laid in the bottom of a boat in a slight swell.
My first impressions were that it was the breeze rocking the caravan. It suddenly dawned on me that the breeze was far to light to have affected the caravan in this way! But decided to ignore this, as the sensation was very relaxing. So I continued to lay there with my eyes closed.
Within a few seconds the rocking was quite suddenly replaced with the sensation of floating up above my body by about two feet. As I didn’t open my eyes I can only guess this measurement.
I didn’t open my eyes to look, as I believed the sensation would cease as soon as I did so.
A few seconds later I felt the sensation of myself rotating 180 degrees. I now had the impression that If I opened my eyes I would be floating above my body, looking down at myself. Still under the impression that this was just a pleasant trick of the mind.
And that if I was to open my eyes. I would be lying on my back on the sofa, Even though I didn’t consciously think this! Just as you don’t think about breathing.
After a couple of seconds I had the impression that I was lifted head first into a standing orientation.
Everything was very calm and tranquil up to this point. But as soon as I was in the fully upright, all hell broke lose. It was though I had just been dropped down what I can only describe as a bottomless tunnel a terrific speed.
    I can remember thinking SHIT!!!!
I then found myself eyes wide open back in the here and now, lying on the sofa.
I glanced over at my wife meditating on the other side of the room. Thinking I may have disturbed her! But no she was still there meditating.
I was amazed the experience was so vivid, I was sure it wasn’t a dream. After a minute or so decided to carry on meditating .To my amazement a few moments after closing my eyes the experience started to repeat.
First with the rocking sensation, then floating as before.
I knew what was coming next when I started to float back to the upright position. And I had decided not to panic as I had on the first occasion.

The second I was in the fully upright position, the same thing happed again! I was now looking at my feet, falling down this tunnel at a terrific speed.
“I will now try and describe, what I had seen”
It was as if I was falling through the centre of a tornado funnel. The funnel was not straight, but seemed to bend and oscillate as I hurtled downwards at an incredible speed. The noise or vibrations where very violent and it was difficult to make things out (as if my whole body was vibrating)
On the walls of this funnel there seemed to be what I can only describe as rectangle shaped Images flying passed either side of me.
These where moving so fast that I couldn’t make out what they were, though I got the impression that they where actual scenes or events.

The events so far seemed to have lasted about 5 seconds, but felt more! I was beginning to get a little apprehensive at the speed I was apparently travelling at, and if the funnel had a bottom!
At this point I just Stopped, I mean one-second I’m travelling at what seemed to be thousands of miles per hour, the next I’m not.
I am just floating in space no longer in the funnel
All around me are billions of stars, but not like you see when you look up at the night sky.
All these stars are exactly the same size; same colour (flame yellow) and appeared to be exactly the same distance apart, totally uniform.
But what was odd I could see them all exactly the same. (“Sorry but this is hard to put into words”) It didn’t matter how distant the stars were from me, I could see them all exactly the same. It’s though width and depth didn’t exist anymore, yet there was width and depth (very hard to explain)
I remember just looking at this beautiful scene. When out of the corner of my eye I glimpsed some movement in the stars to my left. Just a tiny movement at first, the stars started to slowly revolve round each other, this pattern then repeated itself with all the stars .It was like a giant kaleidoscope of stars, spinning, turning and falling in to galaxy’s. At the same time these galaxies were moving away from each other. It was the most beautiful site I had ever seen.
The next moment I found myself eyes open, back on the settee in my caravan.

    Many thanks for sharing that.

Where do you think Out-of-Body Experiences orginate from?

Do you believe that OBE’s and Lucid Dreams have any type of connection? How are they different?

What does the experiencer tend to feel while they are in an Out-of-Body Experience?

How can one tell they are in an Out-of-Body Experience?

Can a person start an OBE? If so what are some techniques?

What is the science behind an Out-of-Body Experiences, if any?

Is there a certain circumstance a person has to be in order to have an OBE?

What typically occurs in an OBE?

How often do OBE’s occur? Can any person experience it?

What do you think is the most important thing a person should know about an Out-of-Body Experience?

Thank You once again for your time.

The snow has given me more time to devote myself to magical endeavours – which I have been doing astrally from a horizontal position…….

  59. For anyone who is interested in this phenomenon, I highly recommend the books written by Robert Monroe. His first book “Journey out of the Body” is a collection of his first experience with astral travel. He approaches it from a semi-scientific perspective and actually conducted experiments during his early years. This has been further researched by the Monroe Institute in Virginia Beach which I see some people have researched. The book also includes some techniques for anyone who wants to have an OBE. His second book “Far Journeys” was written 50 years after the first one and he goes into even greater detail about his travels. I haven’t read the 3rd books because I just found out about it, but in general he is a great source of knowledge about OBEs.

  60. I have had an OBE. I just posted my story yesterday: http://theawakenedlife.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/a-moment-of-supreme-clarity/
