ALIEN MIND

Posted by anthonynorth on February 20, 2008

beta-space-monster.jpg Many Ufologists accept the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis for UFOs. However, if this is correct, there isn’t much more to say on the subject, except to wait for them to show themselves. But loveable – or malign – ET aside, there are plenty of additional theories to account for the UFO.
In January 1979 speculation on UFOs reached such a level that the subject was debated in the British House of Lords. A Lord Clancarty offered much evidence.

SIGHTINGS AND THEORIES

In 1954 an airliner en-route from New York to London was escorted part of the way by a large, bright object, accompanied by six smaller ones. The phenomenon was observed by 22 people on the aircraft.
One February morning in 1978 a large object was witnessed over Tehran by hundreds of people. Two fighters were sent up to investigate and suffered equipment malfunction.
Lord Clancarty was formerly the writer, Brinsley Le Poer Trench. He had argued that UFOs constitute a battle between a terrestrial race living inside the Earth, and the extraterrestrial Sky People.
Alternatively, psychoanalyst, Carl Jung took a psychological approach to the UFO, arguing that it was produced by modern man’s craving for religious meaning. They thus became a subjective phenomenon.
English writer, John Michell agreed with the religious vacuum idea, but also related the modern UFO epoch with ancient legends about gods.
Thus, we have the two extreme stances on the UFO, ranging from fantastic battles between techno-super races, to an idea in man’s mind. Let us focus, here, on the latter possibility.

THEY COME FROM BETWEEN THE EARS

Ufologist Jenny Randles offered this case. In November 1971 a man named ‘Roy’ (pseudonym) observed a UFO hovering over a cafe in a usually busy area. Nothing strange about that in the world of the UFO, but the problem is he was the only person to observe it.
This is typical of many such incidents. We hear of UFOs landing in people’s gardens, but not even the neighbours hear or see anything. This clearly suggests that UFOs are a product of the mind.
For instance, with Roy, he had had many strange occurrences other than of UFO sightings, most coming under the general heading of psychical phenomena.

JOHN KEEL

American journalist John Keel was initially sceptical about UFOs, but began to change his mind when he saw a metallic disc above the Aswan Dam in 1953. Subscribing to a press cutting service, he was staggered by the number of sightings – he could receive 150 clippings a day.
In 1967 he was among a crowd of motorists who stopped on Long Island to watch a glowing sphere in the sky. He investigated the infamous Mothman, a winged creature that terrorised people in West Virginia, and from then on, felt he was being watched by hostile entities.
Strange voices would ring him. He would be told to send letters to non-existent addresses. Replies would be immediate. He once stayed at a motel chosen at random to find a message waiting for him. They even predicted events such as the assassination of Martin Luther King, although some details would be wrong.

THEORISING UPON THE INCREDIBLE

Keel suffered many areas of phenomena that would normally be classed as psychical. But being a rational journalist, he deducted things from his experiences. For instance, he particularly noted parallels between reported ‘space men’ and descriptions of earlier entities associated with supernatural experiences. Keel himself thought of the phenomenon as both deeply historical and essentially psychical in nature.
The defining researcher of this school of thought was French researcher Jacques Vallee who moved to America to work with Hynek, a leading Ufologist. The character, Lacombe, in Splelberg’s ‘Close Encounter of the Third Kind’ was based on Vallee.
Seeing the UFO in a sociological context, Vallee noted the similarity between alien entities and ancient stories of fairies and elementals. Adopting the psychical nature of encounters, he saw the UFO as a modern cultural interpretation of an age old cultural system designed to achieve a specific effect on the human psyche.
Basically, beyond our normal everyday experience, there existed a mechanism that regulated human consciousness; an underlying reality to the world which we do not normally experience because we are stuck in an appreciation of space and time. And an underlying reality that has always been with us, guiding us and teaching us throughout history.

CULTURAL PROLIFERATIONS

Does history offer a reality to such ideas?
Throughout the Medieval period in Europe, Christendom fought to maintain their hold on society. This was done through the politics of fear, leading to a new awareness of Witchcraft and the belief in ‘dark forces’. The witchhunts followed, with attendant burnings and hangings by the thousand.
Could this have been a form of cultural mythos inducing experiences of psychical phenomena, with the hunters actually seeing the manifestations of dark forces they wanted to see?
In 1848 the Fox sisters of New York State began hearing rappings from a murdered pedlar. With this incident, Spiritualism was born, causing an immediate proliferation of spirits.
What is often forgotten is that 1848 was a year of revolution throughout the Western world. Could it also have been a time when insecurity provided a need for people to want to believe in the comfort of speaking with an existant world of the deceased?
In both these proliferations we have a similar story to the proliferation of the UFO. We have a trigger incident that sparks off a series of copycat incidents, creating, I am sure, hallucinations of an ‘in vogue’ idea.
For instance, the modern UFO epoch happened as people first realised, with the rocket, that space flight may be possible. And there are other, more local, examples.

LOCAL PROLIFERATIONS

In the early years of Anno Domini a preacher was put to death for the audacity of speaking his mind and trying to put the human race on a course of peace and love. He told the people that the ‘spirit’ of his message would live on. To the believer, his spirit manifested itself in physical form. His name was Jesus.
In 1914 the British Expeditionary Force fought valiantly to bring the German onslaught to a halt. So successful was their mission, particularly, so many claim, due to the Divine intervention offered in the form of the infamous Angels of Mons; ghostly knights who seemed to escort the British forces.
In this proliferation we can see the fatigue and emotion of the battle as causing a mass hallucination. But what about a trigger? First of all, much of the fighting took place close to the site of the Battle of Agincourt.
Second, about the same time of the fighting, a short story called ‘The Bowmen’ by Arthur Machen, was published in a popular newspaper. In it, medieval bowmen came to the rescue of the British forces.

BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS

Consider, also, the following. In 1858 Bernadette Soubirous had a vision of the Virgin Mary. This is just one of hundreds of such visions in the last millenium. But from Bernadette’s case a cultural mythos was created.
Bernadette was a devout Catholic, had had a hard childhood where fighting to survive in a peasant community was the rule of the day, and she was looking forward to her first Communion.
Young and impressionable, this is the time that fantasies can appear real in order to offer guidance emanating from deep within the unconscious. However, if we see Bernadette’s vision of the Virgin Mary to its completion we see a whole spate of visions from then on during the year in that very same village.
Going on from that year, we see the village becoming quite famous. It is Lourdes; a shrine where faith has shown itself most apt at curing illness.

IN CONCLUSION

The hopes and fears of Bernadette seem to have amplified to echo the hopes and fears of mankind. And by the same line of thought we can perhaps excuse people’s audacity in, today, seeing UFOs. It is, perhaps, the same cultural process in new clothes.
Of course, I would be wrong to say, without doubt, that UFOs are not some strange phenomenon associated with visitations from aliens from outer space. But the evidence seems to suggest not.
Yes, we should keep the possibility in mind. Ignoring something because we consider it impossible has inevitably brought severe dangers to man. But in saying that, we should remember that all avenues must be explored. And it certainly seems that the avenue of explaining UFOs through the amazing world of the mind in more than viable.

  1. If some or even just one or two sightings were valid sightings of “something”, I wonder why the popular idea is that they must be alien?
As we get nearer to the idea that time travel could be possible, would it make sense that the objects claimed to have been seen could be from our own future ? Sounds very sci-fi, but to my mind no dafter than the alien idea.

    Hi Twilight,
There is, infact, a growing ‘time tourist’ hypothesis. Although there is debate concerning whether they are simple tourists or archaeologists.
And no, I am not making this up.

    Hi, Anthony.

I am divided on this issue, meaning that I think it can be either a mental projection of some sort, or an actual physical manifestation.

In my long litany of weird experiences, (and it does seem that this is common for people who experience paranormal phenomena in general), I have to include a couple of UFO experiences. Fortunately I was not alone at the time, but in thinking about them I am inclined to believe that they were mental projections of some sort, even though they were also witnessed by others.

In talking with people who have also had these kinds of experiences I am very inclined to draw a similar conclusion: they are projections. However I do not think that they are pathological manifestations of an individual mind or pure fantasy; I believe that an intelligence other than the individual in question triggered the projection, but for what purpose or reason I do not know. Nor can I speculate on the nature of the intelligence that would do this. But I have found if you can gain the trust of people, that these types of experiences are more common than you might expect.

As to physical evidence this also seems to exist although I personally have no such evidence. I see no reason to categorically deny the existence of such evidence from all over the world over long stretches of time unless you want to buy into a global conspiracy on the part of the general population to perpetuate an ongoing hoax. Doesn’t seem likely.

Even Carl Jung, in his monograph on UFO’s, had to reconsider his position. As you state, he simply viewed it all as a projection of a religious nature. However he was later presented with enough testimony and evidence that bore witness to the physicality of some of these events, that he finally had to admit that he was not as certain of his position.

Once again, we all seem to be waiting for a certified authority with an impressive list of credentials to give us the true word as to what this all is, and that only after peer-review. Until that time we either question our own sanity if we have such experiences, or categorically deny that they exist.

    Hi Techne,
    You said:

‘we all seem to be waiting for a certified authority with an impressive list of credentials to give us the true word as to what this all is’

Sadly, or maybe not, never in the history of science has such a major theory been given by anyone with a mass of credentials. Usually, it is someone ‘outside’ the establishment. There seems to be an induced reluctance for an established scientist to step outside the consensus.
As to the ‘physicality’ of UFO incidents, I’d offer the possibility of a kind of global poltergeist activity, masquerading within our culture.
Indeed, as to your ‘intelligence’, what about culture itself? It is above the individual. It defines ideas within the individual. It is all-pervasive. It is an amalgamation of our thoughts and experiences. It can induce feelings of ecstasy, madness, et al. And if Jung was right, archetypes and collective unconsciousness could certainly be a ‘mechanism’ through which it ‘possesses’ us.

  5. My feelings are simple. If there were aliens flitting around the cosmos, they would either have conquered us long ago or be laughing their antennae off at our stupidity.

    Hi Rose,
That makes complete sense. Infact, some time in the future I’m posting about colonisation time periods of space travelling lifeforms in our galaxy.
    It has some surprising conclusions.

Hi Anthony, the idea of this phenomenon picking up on ideas that are in vogue, is an intriguing one. I seem to remember reading a book sometime in the late 1970s(?) called The Janos People, basically an account of an alien abduction where the abductees were told about the destruction of the aliens’ homeworld, first by meteorites and then by exploding nuclear power stations. Quite a few of these kinds of report seem to reflect the fears of the age, in this case nuclear armageddon. Whitley Strieber’s books have similar accounts (can’t remember specific details right now.) Another thing that has always struck me is that UFO witnesses (I’m one myself!) are often ordinary folks – farmers, policemen, pilots, etc – who are not particularly fantasy-prone, in fact were downright sceptical – before the event.

  8. anthonynorth said

    Hi Alex,
This is very much the reality of the phenomenon – it expresses current fears, and is 99% experienced by ordinary people. But more than this, there is a direct relationship in terms of these factors throughout history, be you dealing with UFOs (20th/21st century), spirits (19th cetury), vampires or werewolves (16th, 17th 18th century), witches, demons or fairies (Middle Ages), and right back to the Classical myths and their gods.
The incidences are the same. Only the mode of expression – the culture – changes.

    Hey Alex,
I enjoy your blogs. It seems to me that this phenomenon is not anything new. (They) have just changed with the times, It used to be coming in to fix your shoes, to telling us how to fix the world. Abducting people and taking them to fairy land, to taking them sirius. For hundreds,or thousands of years (they) have been showing up to scare, bewilder, or enlighten us. I know this is not a new idea, but I think (they) have motives that we will never understand, unless they are really some other beings, what we call angels or demons and religions can then give us some idea as to motive. I look forward to your future postings on this subject as it is something I have read a great deal about and have drawn conclusions that most people would probably think ludicrous, but if you take a good look at some the parallels in history might turn up some interesting congucteres. I look forward to hearing more from you on this. It could all be just a prank upon mankind by that ultimate trickster just having some fun with us!

    Hi Robert,
Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the blog in future. Just one minor point – the name’s Anthony, not Alex 🙂

  11. This is totally fascinating – as well asthe time travel theory that’s been mentioned in the comments, how about the possibility of travel between alternate dimensions? Also I think perhaps in the cases where some people see them and others don’t there’s different levels of awareness at play. There’s an excellent video somewhere that shows a group of people playing volleyball and there are gorillas in there but when the video is shown to audiences the first time only a very few people will see the gorillas, its maybe the same with UFOs.

    Hi Crafty Green Poet,
Wherever aliens could lurk, there’s been a theory to account for it. It’s a fascinating subject, as much about human nature as the possibility of real ETs out there.
The reality we ‘experience’ is very selective indeed. I think we rarely see the ‘objective’ in the raw. Always, our subjective ‘self’ puts its own slant on it.

hi UFO are not real, something imaginary that we feel, a real UFO created by a miltary agency, maybe the testing of this what we see. Yes,a military vehicle was created in the past 5-6 months ago. This vehicle was in the shape of a flying saucer. When talking about UFOs and aliens, how can we forget the mysterious Area 51…. I will write more at a later date.

    Hi Lord,
If you want a brief summary of my entire Ufology, I suggest you try the category, Ufo-tastic, accessed on right sidebar.

  15. So Anthony, if you happened to witness the landing of a glowing saucer, and an odd little fellow came out of it, and if this visitor said that you could ask him one question, and one question only, what would it be? 🙂

  16. anthonynorth said

    Goog morning Red,
This is the problem. If he landed, it is automatic that we think it is we who should ask the questions. This immediately puts us as the underdog.
Rather, I’d make a statement. In this case:
    ‘I think, therefore you are.’
HIS reply would decide whether I duck or not 🙂

I do not have a conclusive opinion yet on any of this. I am inclined to disregard the opinion of alien life forms behind ufos. I am also inclined to disregard the opinion of some sort of polterguise.

I am more open to perhaps time travelers from our own planet! I admit this is still very out there! However IMHO more possible then visitors from another galaxy.

It’s interesting that ufo’s have been around for a long time, and can even be found in the bible. Ezekiel’a Wheel being the most famous or well known. I find it extremely ineteresting that such a early writing can describe such a complex ufo.

It’s really hard for me to accept that these are visitors fromsome other galaxy mainly because of all the problems associated with such space travel. However when you consider time travel, it makes more things possible.

  18. Hi Jim,
There is a growing ‘time tourist’ hypothesis amongst Ufologists today. The argument is whether they are merely tourists from the future, or archaeologists and anthropologists.

  19. JanSteff said

    Hello Anthonynorth.
This argument about timetravelling ebes (extra-biolocical entites) have been discussed between leading military people for at least 40-50 years! The late Col. Philip J. Corso who was one of the US-Army folks that worked in that field. Wrote a book with some of his experiences. He called the book: The day after Roswell. It is a interesting piece of “evidence” if you concider other peoples experiences for evidence.
How many people have been seen and photographed UFOs. How many meters of film with UFOs. How many hours of recorded Radar-glimpses! And if you go to the governments files like CIA or FBI or NSA, NRO, – The files from CIA about UFOs revealed on the CIA-website is “funny” Papers with 60-80% black erase. And we can go on and on! –
Postulate: Our leading top scientists has been working with the consiousness of a reality that is far beyond average mind conception.
Maybe we should consider both realitys: Physically and psycologically interventions into our earthbound lifes. And maybe we should stop believe that we are “THE” superior being. Maybe Creation expresses itself through different kinds of forms and we just observe what we allready can comprehend.
    Best wishes vril1

  20. Hi JanSteff,
Thanks for that comment. Of course, if we are being manipulated in such ways, none of it matters. There would be nothing we could do about it. Infact, arguably we wouldn’t even know.
But we CAN suggest it. Does that fact cancel out the idea?
