OUR FRIENDS FROM OUTER SPACE

Posted by anthonynorth on February 27, 2008

alien-on-planet.jpg What would an alien llfeform be like? And what can we expect them to do about US, should they ever really arrive on planet Earth? As to the reality of alien forms, we should refer to Arthur C Clarke, who advised that if you want to theorise on what they would look like, visit a zoo.
In doing so, the sheer diversity of life-types you will see will tell you it is impossible to speculate on alien-forms unless we actually see them. But what about their motive, and the eventual fate of ourselves?

HOLLYWOOD FUN

Hollywood gives us oodles of scenarios, usually based around the basic idea of malevolence. Words such as ‘invasion’ abound, as if they will be superior beings wiping us out without a second thought.
Whether this is based on reasoned argument, or whether it is a fact that friendly, cuddly aliens wouldn’t make a spectacular movie – ET excepted – I’ll leave to you. However, that they would have superior technology goes without saying.
After all, they’d have got here, wouldn’t they? But to understand alien psychology, perhaps we would be best advised to look at ourselves, our past, and our probable future.

EVOLUTION AND SPACE TRAVEL

During the nervy days of the Cold War, mankind learnt the power of technology. We had to – we could have destroyed ourselves if we hadn’t. And this is perhaps the most important point to realise about any alien forms who had broken out of planetary confinement to explore deep space.
Technology is so powerful that if people don’t learn to live with each other, we’ll destroy ourselves. And as evolution seems to be a constant of life, then we can argue that, to get to the stage of star travel, then the lesson would have to be learnt or any alien form would have wiped itself out before going to the stars.

FRIEND OR FOE OR …

Bearing this point in mind, we can argue that any alien form that reaches us will be benevolent, realising the importance of getting on with others. So the most likely scenario for alien contact should not involve our total destruction by a race of Klingon-like warriors.
However, this does not necessarily mean we will be safe. For there could be a sting in the tail – lf they have one, that is.
It is all to do with sentience. We, as a species, have self-awareness. It is this which makes us human, and our awareness leads to a distinct category of behaviour patterns concerning other animals.
Classifying ourselves as the most sentient beings on planet Earth, we naturally put ourselves at the top of the evolutionary tree. Some other animals, we decide, are not that far behind us. Close runners-up are dolphins, dogs, monkeys and cats.
Due to the degree of sentience we have allowed them, we keep them as cuddly pets or planet-mates and have a distinct dislike for anyone who hurts them.
On the other hand, cows, pigs and sheep are thought to be, in a word – thick. Hence, rather than treating them as near equals we farm them, kill them, chop them up and roast them.
We don’t do it for nasty reasons, but for survival requirements – we need to eat (vegetarians excepted). However, we can argue that any alien form that visits us would have a superior intelligence to us.
Which prompts the question, would they class US as sentient? Let us hope so. For if not, no matter how benevolent they may think they are, we could be dog meat.

We cannot forget that we humans are aliens too. Not only humans, but animals are also aliens. As seen in futuristic shows and cartoons, humans in the future will coexist with aliens, but I don’t believe this. If aliens do come to earth, humans would attack the martian for fear of being “invaded”. Switch the situation, we humans go onto an inhabited planets, the aliens would attack in fear, just like how us humans would react. I also think that Area 51 does not hold aliens like many believe.

    Hi Lord,
Thanks for that comment. We would tend to strike out in fear. That is very true.

There will soon be “Official Disclosure” vs Unofficial by Gov’t personel. It seems the Truce we had with one of the Alien races has been whitteled away over time and we’re back at it. If we begin losing aircraft or anymore things in Orbit with any frequency, be prepared. Don’t let them try and convince you that early civilization mistook UFOs and Aliens as GOD, it’s a trick. I know it sounds crazy but trust me. The Feds were able to keep it secret last time, but too many other nations now want the info made public. Only the American Mass Media refuses to report on daily sightings, most other countries do. Some freedom of the Press, huh?

Any spacefaring race has survived long enough to achieve space travel by developing a technology to destroy or divert extinction level asteroid impacts.
Warlike races are much more likely to have developed weapons technology rapidly enough to be among the survivors in planetary systems subject to extinction impacts–and most rocky planet systems probably are are of this kind.
It is by no means obvious that such survivors have learned to suppress warlike behavior, and just as likely that they have simply been successful at defeating internal enemies and achieving a monolithic hegemony.
The klingons are entirely plausible in my view, and even more probable than any benevolent “space brothers”. Let`s hope they ar not reptilian in the sense of organisms who like to eat mammals alive.

    Hi Lorne,
You could well be right about the Klingons. But which is more probable? I think my scenario, but of course it is just my opinion. But consider a couple of things.
A warrior hierarchy does not tend to be forward thinking, especially in technological terms. Also, a race steeped in ‘mythology’ tends not to develop advanced sciences.

“a race steeped in ‘mythology’ tends not to develop advanced sciences.”

I guess you`ve forgotten about the Nazis, then. –working on atomic weapons–developing first jet fighters—working on ICBMs intended for New York—believed the “folk soul” should have allegiance to Germanic gods (Wotan)rather than Jewish inspired religions (but claimed Yeshuah wasn`t really a Jew) and so on.

    Hi Lorne,
The Nazis used mythology for its own ends, and were not mythological for the sake of myth. Rather, they used mythology like they used everything – cold blooded and in terms of organised industry.
Without the ideology, they would never have looked to the myth in the first place in order to ‘prove’ their perverted ideology. A truly ‘myth’ based society lives the myth – the Nazis adapted the myth to their own ends. A totally different thing.

I agree, it is a different thing when stated in the way you have stated it. Nevertheless, the cynical ideologues of the Nazi party did not see any conflict between imbuing the populace with a supposedly Germanic mythology and simultaneously expecting them to produce scientific innovations. Quite the reverse–they expected a culture which lived such a “heroic” myth to be highly motivated towards superiority in all things–and in twentieth century war terms, that meant a superior technology.
However, we have wandered from the focus of the discussion. I only mentioned the Klingons as an example of a warlike evolution of a culture, not as an example of a mythologically driven culture. It is irrelevant if an alien race of beings believes in ,shall we say, Doomo The Sky Dwarf. It IS relevant if they believe in the proven effectiveness of martial prowess.

    Good morning Lorne,
I disagree that we’ve strayed from the topic. A mythology represents the psyche of a particular culture. Any culture can have both peaceful and martial elements, but one tends to drive the other.
For instance, martial driven races tend to be pragmatic engineers. Hence, the Iron Age appeared because of a simple need for a stronger metal for swords. Alternatively, ancient China, a more insular race, invented gunpowder – and used it for pretty fireworks.
The difference is in ‘concept’. For instance, a martial race is very unlikely to think up nuclear weapons. The science is conceptual, and basically peaceful. The war adaptation followed. And don’t forget, the Nazis had the science wrong.
Yes, your initial point is correct, in that a martial race COULD eventually be star travelling. But I still maintain it would be the exception.

    Hi Anthony!
Once again interesting discussion. As for us being dogmeat to aliens, remember Damon Knight’s “To Serve Man,” made into a Twilight Zone episode. The aliens are seemingly benevolent until someone manages to translate their book “To Serve Man”…and the kick ending is, “It’s A Cookbook!” Cheers, Sue

    Hi Sue,
A delicious story. I can imagine them spitting out the grizzly bits as I read it 🙂

  13. Very interesting article Anthony. It’s clear you would make a great PET for our future alien overlords.

I meant that as a compliment, of course 😉
