PROF ISAAC GALISTEIN

Welcome to my weekly magazine post. Watch
it grow thru the week. You can opt to read
the essay, current affairs, themed mini mag
with fiction & poetry, or just read the lot.
Plenty for everyone here. Do call again.

HATS

You’ve got to take your hat off to Tim Burton for his Alice in
Wonderland. He won’t be going cap in hand any time soon. And as
for the Mad Hatter … well he’s … (mad?) … But maybe not too
different. Think of the Victorian gent and his top hat. As with much
headwear it’s to do with status and identity – as is the crown of a
king. But you’ve got to worry about the need to have a big hat to
look bigger than the rest. And what can we say about wearing half
a ton of gold on the head. Makes the Mad Hatter rather sane,
don’t you think?

HISTORY

In human terms advancement is an illusion. History may show a steady
advance, but I suspect this is only culture deep. We simply make the
same mistakes, only in new cultural or technological clothes. This is
due to our historic changes being too extreme. It becomes so
because of frustration. An existent society causes general frustration
in a population, eventually causing an outbreak, through philosophy,
of a new idea. The philosophers behind this worked out their new idea
through being more frustrated than most, thus making the idea
extreme. The warriors then grasp the idea and add a further level of
fanaticism and the result is violent revolution or war. Such cultural
catalysts show the errors of the dialectical approach to understanding
history. This approach led to both communism and fascism and argues
two opposing societies will inevitably rise and clash, and out of their
clash, a new, more perfect society will evolve from their synthesis.
This is rubbish. The clash and synthesis may well occur, but the result
is never more perfect. We appear stuck in a continual rut of repeating
cycles. This is due to all ‘systems’ within a society having an urge to
power. Even the present democratic systems are become power crazy
– all systems do. But this is how history works and we survive –
changing the system now and again before it gets too powerful. We
used to do this through war. I wonder if we’ve advanced enough yet
to try another way. As to that way, history seems to show a law of
opposites in that conflicting systems and societies seem to rise in
fanaticism equal to the fanaticism of the other. Hence, maybe the
way to break the cycle is for one side to realize that a reduction of
fanaticism in theirs will inevitably lead to a reduction in the opposite.
I seem to recall some fellow speaking about turning the other cheek.
Maybe we’ve known the answer a long time.

MURMUR

Can you hear the sound? A murmur breaks,
Barely audible – through space it snakes,
Round planets and stars and into the dark,
Bringing light of knowledge; such a lark;
It’s the murmur of man in the space he belongs,
Satisfying curiosity, singing his song

DAY OF THE ALIEN

Sci Fi: The alien had been on Earth for only a short time when he
understood. At first, of course, he hadn’t. He looked on the primary
species – the Human – as a thug. How could he do all this to his
planet? he wondered. But then he thought of his own species’ dark
past – the myths of the First Ones who settled there, not
understanding the umbilical cord of planet to species. They had come
close to planetary destruction – until the planet had worked on their
genes, slowly but surely producing a species as one with it. Finally,
his ancestors had banished the First Ones, their destination lost to
history. And the alien turned to the Human. ‘Hello brother,’ he said.

CREATING MISCHIEF

All is beautiful when I think of you,
Watching the video does imbue,
Feelings of love of what I created,
Only to realise I was never sated,
So inevitably I had to wipe you all out,
A whole species following without any doubts,
Sometimes it’s hard being an omnipotent being,
Or a whizz kid playing in front of the screen

FLASH 55 – DESIRE

Sci Fi: I desire it so much. I’m trapped in a time loop, my conscious
knowledge ten seconds ahead of my actions. I desire it more than I’ve
ever desired anything before. Yet, the pain is crippling. But now,
knowing how unbearable the pain will be, I desire it so much – in the
time loop – for eternity.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

The telescope took it, cosmic past,
Showing eons ago, just after the blast,
Suns exploding, releasing life,
Initial stardust of my wife,
Showing destined thread from then to now,
As star and life we’re one, let’s bow

MODIFIED MAN

Bronze Age sword conquered all,
Iron split bronze, spectacular fall;
Cavalry charge, chevalier grace,
Tank wiped them out – increased pace;
Atom bomb, stark destiny,
Man is getting where he wants to be;
Forever wanting to modify,
Obedient to his will to try;
Now in space, invisibility veil,
Unbeatable gods! Morals fail

THAT BOOK

I’ll tell you a tale of years from now,
Everything changed – this is how,
A book appeared and totally enthralled,
Romance, it was – that was all,
But nothing could ever be the same,
An android that wrote; felt love and pain?

CRIME NEWS: Number of child criminals up 13% in UK under Labour.

Has there ever been a perfect society? Not that I can recall. Individuals and humans as a species seem to be moving in divergent directions. The consumption culture is an evolutionary dead-end but there is no political will to change course. The continuing Great Recession is likely to crash again this year, only this time, there won’t be any more bailouts of corporations.

  4. Hi Brian,
No, I doubt if there could be such a thing as a perfect society – if for no other reason than we would be bored stiff. I suppose it’s about balance.

  5. Perfect society? I’d like to give that a go for a bit. I live in a war zone. I could easily be bored for a very long time.

Have a terrific day Anthony. 🙂

  6. Hi Sandee,
Yes, I can see its attraction.

The periodical change of our attitude to life is dictated by the changing genes in us (Reshimot, which comes from the word Roshem “recording” in Hebrew). The stages of egoism’s changes are recorded inside each of us from the beginning, when the common soul divided into many souls.

Reshimot are revealed in us in an increasing, consecutive order: 0-1-2-3-4. Therefore, at the beginning stages of their realization in us, the Reshimot brought forth a small egoism in us and in those lives we were naïve – slaves and masters. Then, as more advanced Reshimot surfaced in us, when we were born in the next epochs, we desired to be freer to be workers such as vassals or serfs. Women were married off without their permission, and this was considered “correct.” They loved their husbands because their small egoism did not get in the way. This was the accepted norm.

Reshimot elicit desires in us, and the desires provoke the mind to achieve what we desire. Today we can see nations in whom different Reshimot were expressed in the same epoch and therefore we dont live in one cultural zone but in different cultures and formations. However globalization is bringing about a quick realization of Reshimot in every person and in everyone together.

  8. Hi James,
    Obviously I disagree with this.

  9. Creating mischief has me thinking how and what we make and break.

Only mankind is weird enough to keep striving for IT when the pain, or price, is way too high. Other “lesser” creatures give up. They just don’t have the brains to kill themselves over temporary satisfactions. I’m so glad we’re superior!

As as for that poor alien — I am certain that if there is another intelligent life form in the galaxy, it is smart enough to know to avoid us!

  11. Hi Sandy,
Always a moral maze, that – for so many.

    Hi Quilly,
I’ve thought for a long time that any form of physical pleasure is a courting of pain. As for aliens, I came to the conclusion a long time ago that any technological species will reach a point where they either learn benevolence or destroy their habitat. Hence, any cosmic species is likely to be peaceful. So if we meet, the only problem will be, do they think us sentient? If not, they’ll eat us 😉

  12. It is really scary as to how much we are depending on IT, don’t you think?
Imagine if they can COOK and look BEAUTIFUL , OMG. lol

Again, Anthony, I got to salute you , and again, I shall be back!

We appear stuck in a continual rut of repeating cycles. Yep – it’s the cycles of Sun, Moon and planets, AN! Costumes and faces change but the stories repeat. The cycles do form more of a spiral than simple repeating circles though, so little by little, millennium by millennium things will change. 😉 Not necessarily for the better.

Sad to read about Michael Foot’s death – he was one of my favourite politicians, back in the day. I did agree with his ideas, by the way. 😉 His son, Paul – is he still around?

Love “The Photograph” – reminds me of Carl Sagan’s line “We are star stuff looking at the stars”.

  17. Hi Twilight,
    Thanks for that.
Yes, those cycles lock us in. I’m not convinced about that change, though. It COULD be possible, but we’ve got to break an over-bearing power-urge first.
The last I heard of Paul Foot was quite a long time ago when he was with The Guardian. His father will certainly be missed.

History shows us that politics in general has often been used as a tool for personal gain, and yes, by power crazy people.
Great batch of Sci-fi/Space shorts, particularly Day Of The Alien – perhaps our arrogance/apathy IS slowing down the evolution process.

  19. Hi Stan,
Thanks for that. A great observation about the evolution process.

  20. Christine said

I’m afraid you’re right about human advancement. It’s depressing though. I saw the movie ‘Idiocracy’ the other day. I only watched it because someone gave me the video, but it was a little too close to reality.

  21. Hi Christine,
Yes, we’ve been in a rut through most of our history. Tragic.

  22. “As to that way, history seems to show a law of
opposites in that conflicting systems and societies seem to rise in
fanaticism equal to the fanaticism of the other. Hence, maybe the
way to break the cycle is for one side to realize that a reduction of fanaticism in theirs will inevitably lead to a reduction in the opposite.” I couldn’t agree more, but why does this seem to be so difficult for the leaders of the world to grasp/follow/comprehend??? Or is there just no desire to to??? And if not, why??

    Have a great week, Anthony!

The good thing about Tim Burton is that he’ll try to research his characters and almost certainly will have made our Mad Hatter display the symptoms of mercury and lead poisoning – like the red tipped fingers and red rimmed eyes, and the orange tint to the hair, not to mention the brain damage! LOL!

Boy isn’t that true about “history” and how it repeats itself. Fanaticism does seem to be the root cause. Thanks for sharing this.
    Pamela

  70. I have to especially agree with what you said here:

“Hence, maybe the way to break the cycle is for one side to realize that a reduction of fanaticism in theirs will inevitably lead to a reduction in the opposite.”

That is so true. Zenos’ paradox: an irresistible force to an immoveable object. What happens when the two collide? There is a difference between pure heart and fanaticism: I think the latter comes from the head, with the super ego, and maybe the id and the ego involved. It’s that whole “argh, hiss” reptilian brain thing, wanting to dominate, be supreme, and be right.

    Thank you for sharing.

  71. Modified Man – the ending line speaks! The march through time is very definitive.

  72. Hi Shelley,
Yes, tall hats were very important for self esteem, it seems 🙂

    Hi Nessa,
Yes, It’s sad but seems to be the case.

    Hi Betsy,
Well, with Burton directing and Depp as the Hatter, it’s got to be good.

    Hi Pamela,
Yes, maybe one day we’ll break the cycle.

    Hi Nicole,
Yes, very true, although I’d add one other factor. It seems to me that such a will to power is based in insecurity. The supposed most powerful end up the weakest psychologically.

The colors in the movie were bright and eye catching however I saw it in 3D and have to say it really lacked in the 3D effects making the movie certainly not one of my faves but not one of the worse movies I have seen. I hope that you have a fantastic weekend and so happy to know you are experiencing the enjoyable weather of Spring approaching. Thanks for checking out my 55 as well, yours is awesome as always.

  116. Hi Anthony, I knew I hadn’t been every where I wanted to go…your 55. Desire captivates us and takes us prisoner in many ways, not just the obvious. Excellent 55! I enjoyed ‘The Photograph’ very much. :))

  117. Hi Eaton,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Anthony, I enjoyed your “murmur” poem. I think I am just one of those guys singin’ my song. 🙂 I always read your comments regarding Brit news with great interest. I often listen to BBC radio on XM in my car and do appreciate a differnt (non-US) perspective on the world. Refreshing, if not perfect. Thanks for your extensive, informative writings. My best, Rob.

  119. Hi Loch Rob,
Thanks for that. Yes, sometimes the UK can be rather peculiar regarding currents affairs 🙂

  120. Sci Fi…all is possible then……….:)

  121. Hi Sandra,
Yes, Sci Fi lets you go anywhere.

  122. I like your take on murmur. Such a lovely image of a cosmic movement.

  123. Hi Sandy,
Thanks for that. Maybe one day we’ll actually start.

sounds real nice sir! a silent murmur, that one..

  125. Hi Leo,
Yes, it sounds good to me 😉

Tony, I do believe many murmur in their space and also in the space of others 🙂

I can hardly wait to see the latest offering by Tim Burton. Alice in Wonderland has always entertained me with it`s many treats within treats.

  127. Hi Maggie,
I can certainly agree with that.

Great take on the “murmer” prompt. I also read “History” and these are thoughts I am dwelling on a lot lately. It seems that we haven’t learned much from the past, does it? Some frightening trends, here in Canada. Free speech being attacked, police brutality on the rise, etc… when are the politicians and decision makers going to start doing something? Where will it all end?

    food for thought, thanks Tony

  129. Hi Geraldine,
Thanks for that. Yes, things are going wrong throughout the west at the moment.

It was wonderful to read you again…loved the visualization as to how murmur snakes through its space…

  131. Hi Swapna,
Many thanks. And it’s good to see you again.

  132. WOW! extraordinaire!

  133. Hi AD,
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

The magic of creations that could also bring magical murmurs most especially to man…:) Beautiful piece Anthony… 🙂

    Good morning!

murmur: I love this, so poetic in nature as well as words.

  136. Hi Tammie,
    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

whew Tony, I sure hope your Sunday Scribblings poem isn’t prophetic. Authors have a tough enough time dealing with publishers, sales venues, etc. It would be terrible to have to compete with androids too. Maybe we could just take away their little oil cans!

  138. Hi Dee,
I certainly hope so, too. Can’t be having that. Mindst you, we’re getting close. There’s a lot of celebrities ‘writing’ now 😉

  139. Woohoo! I love Murmur!

  140. Hi Tumblewords,
Many thanks for the kind words.

We are sending messages hopefully to be picked up by aliens in outer space. Our radio telescopes are listening for them also. 🙂

  142. Hi Jim,
Yes, SETI and other organisations are trying hard.
