TONY ON ORGANS AND OTHER NEWS

Posted by anthonynorth on September 14, 2007

THOUGHTS FROM A COMMON MAN
News and comment LATEST: Are biological heart transplants the right way? … PLUS … Kids dream of fantastic things. Are the police under siege by thought?
POSTED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY … from a real voice of Britain and the world.

It has been announced that designer animals for organ transplants could be with us in two years. So, need a new heart? Just pop into the hospital and swap it. However, the reality is, it could most likely have already been a reality.
Not, I might add, a heart grown in an animal. Rather, if the same enthusiasm and money had been placed on mechanical replacement organs, they could have been perfected long ago.

Duping the people

Why wasn’t this option followed? My suspicion is that it would have been bad for big business, which is everything nowadays, I’m afraid.
In normal life, culture is kept fluid and faddish, celebrities leading the scene, only to guarantee that we require lots of consumer spending to keep up with the trends. Constant change in leisure technology provides the same function.

Profit rules, OK?

If we go to the defence industry, the time has gone when the soldier said what he wanted and industry provided. Now, industry tells the soldier what the technologist wants to make, and the soldier ends up with it regardless.
Big business simply must be on top, and it is sadly the same with the medical businesses. A new mechanical heart would be a single operation, with maybe a replacement sometime in the future. But a biological heart requires constant check-up and, most importantly, a life time of drugs.
Now which, I wonder, is the most profitable option?
