I’ve been saying for years that one major possibility with climate change is that exotic diseases could reach the UK, causing all sorts of epidemics. It seems I might not have been far wrong.
In the last few weeks, some 200 people in Italy have been infected with chikungunya, causing crippling muscle pains and fever, and spread by mosquitos. One person has died.
This should sound a warning bell regarding invasions, into Europe, of more and more exotic insects and diseases, for which we have no natural immunity. I fear those who think global warming will bring nothing but sunshine are being too optimistic.
